Well for 1 they are 115 bhp not 105 like someone had said above, they are easy to modify aswell as mine has a 2.0l mondeo zetec in itwith a custom ilet, 4 branch manifold, kent cams and magnasquire managment and has been rolling roaded @ 178bhp at the wheels, it is also stripped out with a flocked dash to make it lighter, much faster than ya average saxo!!!

Yea YOURS is, but they aint all like yours. The ford model escort GTI is a lost opportunity, they should have made it at least 150 BHP. The RS 2000, that was a good car.

Ave had my escort gti for over 2 years. She's a 3door model in moondust metallic silver. People still comment on it being a smart looking car. Ford nailed it with the looks, the only bummer is front, it looks like any normal mk6/7 escort. Performance isn't the best, but who cares when you get good looks. Can anyone tell me why mine looses power in the higher revs? could it be the K n N I had fitted or the fuel pump. It's doing my head in!

My gti is like the fastest thing ever, I can get 150+ out of it easily and its standard! Saxos are nothing compared to the gti ma mate has a VTS and he's like a dot in ma mirror all the time! Think ford shud have called it the Subaru killa!

I have an escort gti 1997, 5door all be it, but hey they look smart as!having problems with mine tho, loosing a bit of power higher up the revs, and it used to idle very eratically. So I reccomend to anyone get the idle control valve changed, and a decent cat in it, that sorted my problems out. Dunno about escorts doing 140mph without mods tho, but I'm sure with the 2.0ltr throttle body and uprated cams it would do the buisness. anyone wanna discuss the gti add me to msn I always have questions, cos theres always somethin that is botherin me with it lol

I really can't understand why people say the 1.8 head turner is not fast? I have a standard s plate in silver and she's been 130mph... only modification is my power flow exhaust? its stunning, reliable and quick.

I own a 140bhp escort gti, its awsome! its got a magnex ss system, k&n,2ltr throttle bod and maf sensor, it trashes vts, s with minimal mods. good and reliable to. it peaks at 133mph at 6200rpm in 4th gear on the rolling road. NOT BAD.

£2000 is fine to get 1, people say the 1.8 is not fast... just don't listen to them, obviously these people are just trying to make it look bad, there fast fast cars, mine does 135 with just a good filter. even the 1.6 Si will do 130 mate. great buy. trust.

I own a 1998 R reg GTi. Paid £1300 for it back in march and it had 91.500 on the clock, this didn't bother me as I have always driven escorts. This has got to be the best I have owned yet!! Up to now, the only thing I have had to do is get the clutch changed. She now has 109k on the clock and she is still sweet. I have had her to 137mph and the only mods are a piper stainless back-box and a drop of 30mm.

Does anybody know whether or not there is a white clock face available with the obligatory orange arms as I think the black looks lost!!

I am also looking for a decent set of rims to compliment the diamond white paintwork. Anyone who thinks the front looks daft, try a cossie splitter, they add that element that ford forgot!! Comments welcome.

Okay, there are a few people getting over excited about facts and figures in here... Just because the speedo says the car is doing 140mph it doesn't make it so. Don't believe me? Run a decent GPS, or take the car to a runway with timing lights and you'll find out soon enough. Mine over-reads by about 8% which seems to be pretty normal (my bike says 186mph when it's doing 171mph, but that's another story...).

Also, a standard GTI will not do 0-60 in under 8 seconds. As someone has already mentioned, that's the territory of the original RS Turbo, which this is definitely not. Real 0-60 time is somewhere around nine and a half seconds. So, it's not a quick car, but it does everything else well, is cheap to maintain, insure etc. I've had mine for two years and it's only cost £250 in repairs (probably about 30k miles in that time), excluding consumables like tyres etc.

To make the front look better I have fitted twin head lamps and a gear x grille. its lowered 40 mm with air fiter, 2 litre throttle body and exaust and I've had 135 and she was nt dieing my 0 60 is 7.8 she is a flyer, but you don't need to drive them fast mine raws at 40 but I'm selling mine, full spec below.
