I owned a 96 si and a 97 gti and all I can say is that these cars are not quick at all they are basic ford zetec engines as fitted to the later 115bhp ghia lx etc. from what I can remember the gti was a group 13 insurance that was just for the looks. ford never ever fitted a 105bhp zetec to the gti as wrongly stated earlyer in the thread.
The fiesta zetec s is the same sort of thing where it looks good appeals to boy racers (who think they r quick) but wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding!! They just look nice which is why they have a lot of fans.
I have since owned many fords the last being a fiesta ST and currently a focus ST which is in a different league to the gti
The ST is an awsome car which is fun to drive v quick and drinks like a fish exactly how a sports car should be.
Why on earth do these people say the escort GTI is slow, are they MAD?? they may not be the quickest car ever, but I've had two a five door now a two door both on R registration. top speed 140mph on a push. that's final!!
ESCORT GTI'S ARE AMAZING YEAH THEY ARE SLOW AS STANDARD, BUT WITH THE RIGHT MONEY AND MODS YOU CAN EASILY SEE OVER 200BHP.
AS SOME1 HAS STATED EARIER THAT SAXOS WILL BEAT ESCORT GTI'S ALL DAY LONG!
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A SAXO EVEN KEEP UP WITH MINE.

I bought an escort gti last week and its in mint condition, the only thing I'm worried about is that when I put my foot down, either setting off or at the beggining of 2nd gear the front end of the car shoots to the right hand side and I can't stop it doing it, does any body know what this could be as I don't have a clue, thanks.
How can you say the escort gti is slow? I've tuned myne a bit and it flys. leaves saxos in its dust, and many other cars. my cars got a pro speed exhaust and stainless induction, 2.0 cams throttle body ecu, and is chipped, put it on a rolling road and it was running 153 bhp. shes a demon lol. turbo next lol.

Who ever said that the saxo vtr is quicker than an escort gti is wrong! I was putting along today when a boy racer in a saxo vtr came right up my backside. he tryed to over take and I dropped the box and left him LOL. Then he followed me onto a dual carriageway, came up on the side of me flat out with a big smirk on his face, and I just left him for dust again, then to further humiliate himself after a roundabout he slowed down and droped the box, and I just growled it down the carriage way and left him. Only mods my car has got is straight through exhaust and 2.0 throttle body, and 16 inch alloys. I was annoyed when somebody said that the Saxo is quicker, so I had been looking for one to race.
This is for the person havin the probem with pulling to the right when accel!!!
Check ya drivers side front and rear lower arm bushes.
Common for splitting
if you jack the drivers front wheel you n wiggle the wheel side to side you should see the arm moving.

I have a '98 escort gti with piper-x induction kit and magnex exhaust system. Top end 140mph, 0-60 approx 7.5secs, so whoever thinks a vtr (or vts) can match it then I think you may be tellin some little white lies!..raced many n find it quite amusin when they try to overtake, but get left in the distance! always makes me laugh! Would recommend this car to any1 as I have experienced very few problems, but selling soon as I am getting a focus ST.. should be fun!
Having heard so much about the Escort GTi I am after buying one - But being a boring old fart, want one that is unmolested!!

All I can say is the Escort GTi 1.8i 16v is a good all rounder. Stylish, Quick, reliable easy to upgrade BHP.
All this with saxo's even if they are quicker which I doubt they are. I'd much rather have a 3door Escort GTi than a Saxo as I think 2 many boy racers have them same as corsa any boy racer who are bigging up the saxo is cause they can't afford 2 buy, insure, run a GTi an try to insult it! I know every single boy racer who see's my GTi can't stop starrin and not for long as they can't keep up with there exhaust pipes they have taken off a jumbo jet.

HI THERE, I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT THE GTI IS SLOW!! I ADMIT THEY ARE NOT THE QUICKEST CAR, but 0-60 IN UNDER 9 SECONDS AND TOP SPEED OF AROUND 130MPH, I Don't CLASS THAT AS SLOW.

Hi, I own a 1998 Escort GTI. I have had the car for about six months and it is completely standard. I have just bought some 17's I am going to fit.
I want to improve the bhp. I wondered what mods I should carry out first? I want to take it up to about 140bhp.
Also, I feel the brakes could do with improving. Is it worth getting EBC vented discs and green pads?
