I just spoke to Jeep, Chrysler customer service division and was told that the replacement of a ball joint has nothing to do with alignment. Strangely after having the repair of the ball joint, it pulls to the right and is wearing the inside of the left front tire. Reading pages of customer complaints, I will be trading this potential accident for a Ford truck this weekend. I refuse to continue driving a vehicle that could possibly make me the cause of an accident killing myself or some other innocent person. It sounds like this problem is being ignored by Jeep which is an invitation to disaster.

Suggest you do a little research on the "safety" of Ford trucks.
I just bought a 2004 Jeep Liberty today...
It is pulling to right.. when I test drove it...
But now I know it could be the ball joints...
I am taking it back to the dealer.. so they can keep it.
We just took our 2004 liberty in because the front end had a loud whining sound. they replaced the ball joints under recall and some other parts. both front tires were cupped they rotated them and said that they need to be rotated every 6000 miles. following it home I noticed the rear tracked to one side. I'll bet it is the frame alignment as earlier described in a comment. the wife drives it and doesn't complain... but I took it back when it was new and told them it was out of alignment. they did an alignment and said it was fixed. it only has 18000 miles on it. and I never heard of having to rotate tires every 6000 miles on a new car. I wouldn't have bought it.
Went to a dealer and the 2004 Jeep Ltd with leather seats and sunroof caught my eye. It was the trail rated one with 25,000 miles. I took it for a test drive to realize it was pulling to the right! By reading all your comments regarding ball joints and pulled steering and topping it off with the service of Chrysler Jeep Eagle, I am afraid and second guessing on purchasing this vehicle. Don't want to be driving down a highway doing 100 and having the ball joint snap to have my body rolling across the highway like a rag doll. I think I will go for the 2005 Ford Escape XLT Full Leather/sunroof. What do you think?
My 2004 jeep Liberty delays shifting to first gear on a cold start. Took it to the dealer and they changed the tranmission fluid, but not the filter, I'm still having the same problem. Is anybody experiencing this problem?
To the comment above. Check mycarstats. com It is free to sign up. They have a lot of info for the consumer, and yes there is a TSB on this problem (NOT A RECALL). I also am having the same problem.
I also have a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport Trail Rated. The rear calipers hung up and caused my brakes to stick, got hot and burned lining off them. I was told that this was not not the dealers problem, that it was a normal thing to happen, referring to normal everyday wear and tear. This cost me $595.00 to fix this. Next my check engine kept coming on, took it to Chrysler Jeep and was told that the thermostat was stuck in the open position. I was told the thermostat needed replaced and that the new one would not be warranted unless the the radiator was flushed and had new antifreeze put in. This cost me $ 217.00. Check engine light came on again this time I was told by same place that the Jeep needed a tune-up, new plugs, fuel filter, air cleaner and would have to have vehicle scanned and code reset by computer, this cost $ 297.00. Now the Jeep is fuming sometimes and sounds like it has a miss in the exhaust system, uses a lot of fuel. When I first drive it in the morning after sitting the previous evening, when I put gear selector in drive or reverse, it hesitates with a jerk, drifts backwards on small incline when foot is taken off brake petal. The back hatch door rattles very loudly when driving. Oh yea I forgot to mention another problem with the transmission--when putting gear selector in any gear there is a loud noise like a humming motor noise. I was told I needed the transmission flushed, new filter, and fluid and mechanic would do the required adjustments specified for my Jeep this cost me $247.00. Guess what---same problem. I took it back to the Dealer and a technician came out to my vehicle to listen to the noise and this time I was told that the noise was normal. I believe that all owners of a 2004 Jeep Liberty should be replaced, and also any other year of the 2002-and up! These are very serious problems. This is the first Jeep Liberty that I have owned and it will be the last one! I will stick with Ford Rangers, Explorers, and GM Sonoma from now on. Hopefully a legal representative will see that Chrysler Jeep makes good to the folks that have purchased the Jeeps with so many problems. Also I had my Exhaust System inspected (NOT AT DEALER) but when I had new tires put on and a alignment and the exhaust system was fine. I believe there is a emission problem as I stated to the Dealer that's when mechanic said it needed complete tune-up. Does anyone else have any of these same things wrong with their Jeep Liberty?
I own a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport with 80000 miles. I bought it used and it pulled to the right and the rear end would 'bang' on a stop or a take off. The tires, alignment, and ball-joint recall were done. The problem was the bushings in the rear control arms. Problem solved. The banging was corrected by having the dealer re-lube the rear differential spline with 'Lucas' lube. Problem solved. Now my check engine light just came On, now what?
I bought a 2002 Jeep Liberty and have had many problems with it from day one. AC condenser broke, power locks stopped working, 2 of 4 front speakers needed to be replaced, and the right rear window wouldn't roll down. Fortunately, I bought an extended warranty and all of these problems were covered. However, my biggest and most expensive concern is NOT covered. My rear brakes keep breaking! First, two sets of brake pads cracked within 3 months of each other. I've had them replaced at least 5 times with high-end brands, and each time they either crack or wear down very quickly. Also, I've had to have the drums turned at least 6 times (in 2 years), and each time the brakes start squealing after only a few weeks. When I take it back to the mechanic, they say that the drums haven't been turned or are warped. Then they turn them again! So now I not only have to replace the drums, but I also have to replace the brake pads again, which are only 4 months old and already have 50% wear on them! My vehicle only has 64,000 miles on it, and most of my driving is highway, so I'm not applying the brakes a lot. Has anyone else have brake problems, and if so, were they fixed?
I purchased an '05 liberty sport trail rated just 6 months ago, unfortunately for me I drive a lot, and I went past the 4k mark prior to my rear brakes failing, otherwise I'd return the sucker under lemon law.
I first noticed the problem about 3 weeks after I purchased it when I switched the car into part-time 4WD, something started smoking. When I brought it to my original dealer, he said nothing is wrong with the car, I just got some water on the brake pads. So I drove off and the next time it happened I brought it to another dealer, this place discovered a couple of things. First off, my rear brake caliper froze up, this might be the problem that the you are having with the drums and the failing pads. Then it turned out that because of the failed caliper my drums and brake pads were erased so I needed to change them. And I also had some sort of a leak on my rear differential for an unclear reason.
Thankfully I canceled the dealer warranty and bought an extended one and they not only covered my caliper, my leaking differential, but the also covered my CD player which only had the radio functioning. I unfortunately had to dish out just under a grand for the second rear caliper, and the full front brake job with OEM parts, but at least I got a lifetime warranty on all my brake pads and drums.
