I bought my 2000 S-Type in June 2006 and immediately started having troubles. The speedometer doesn't read correctly (shows me doing 80 when I am at 69), but the dealer can't find the problem.
After they worked on it, the front screen became very noisy. It sounds like I am driving through a wind storm at 40 mph. The transmission is starting to slip, but the dealer can't replace it until it goes out. It gets a bit scary when this happens at an intersection, and I can't move. When it finally catches, I dang near get whiplash as it slams into place.
I just had the timing chain replaced, and have now spent a total of $1500 in 6 months on this car. Thanks Ford!

I bought a 2003 S type Jag brand new off the shelf and I love it. I had problems with the headlights at first, sometimes they'd decide to drop down and only illuminate about ten feet in front of the car. Had to stop the car and shut it off then turn it back on and it's fine. The dealer never could solve it, but not using the auto feature on the headlights and just turning them on and off manually seems to have that problem solved. It now has 74000 miles on it and I'm noticing the transmission maybe slips once in awhile as I pull away from a stop light. Otherwise - no problems and 30-31 mpg at any speed above 60. I say they fixed the problems as of the 2003 models, of course the transmission might fall out tomorrow, but until it does - I think it's a great car.
I purchased my 2001 Jaguar (60,000 miles on it) about 5 months ago from a dealer who said they did all the safety checks and ran a full diagnostic on the car and it came up clean. I also decided to CarFax it and once again it came up clean. I did not escape the Jaguar curse. Four thousand miles later the transmission had to be replaced at the cost of $5300.00 along with the front brakes $1000.00. Now the headlights are flashing like there is a short in them and the suspension is clunking like an old junk car from a salvage yard. I tried to sell it to Carmax and they offered me less than $8000.00. So now I panic every time I drive it because I'm scared something else is going to break and I'll have to throw hundreds or thousands into a car that appears to be worth under 8 thousand bucks at best. I'm sick to my stomach and my wife is beyond words. Can anyone enlighten me on my possible suspension problems and cost? After reading this forum I'm scared to push the window buttons. HELP!
Wow, I just purchased a used Jaguar s typr with 79000 miles. Heater coil has been replaced, transmission slips and finally falls into place with an alarming thrust (danger written all over it), the dashboard lights do not come on sometimes, it stalls and I have to shift into neutral to rev and near snap my neck when lights turn green, no window or transmission problems yet and reading all that stuff is REALLY SCARY.
I thought I had a dream car, so happy I hardly slept when I got it just peeking out the window. Guess what I still do not sleep for other reasons all related to the Jaguar, funny a'int it?
I cannot tell any of my friends as they look up to me as the guy with the Jaguar. Otherwise it is a head turner and when it is good it is great. Anyone know how this brand got such an enviable ranking? Can't figure it out.
If anyone has a true solution please e-mail exlogical3@hotmail.com.
I have bought a 2000 jaguar s-type with 55k miles on it 2 years ago. I now have 86k miles and my transmission does not slip, does sometimes get stuck a li'l bit on a steep incline. but I have had to replace my heart coil. my power packs (coils) about 3 times each of them in the past 2 years. my window fell off the tracks and got lost in my doors. and my navigation system doesn't read the cd 99%of the time. I'm currently in the process of changing my power steering pump that broke, but can't seem to get it out of the hood. one of the hoses won't come loose. I think jaguar is worse then driving a kia armanti. atleast kia will stand behind their car and not neglect problems till your warranty is gone. they are running scams if you ask me and should be sued by every jag owner out there.. the v6 I have with sport package and the features I got I think is more than double what it should be... very disappointed in jaguar. and would never buy one again.
I purchased my 2000 S type vehicle at 50,000 miles it know has 70,000 miles and my transmission fault light went on I took it to the dealer and they said that my transmission was slipping and that the solenoid needed to be replaced. But that was not going to solve the problem, they mentioned that I would need a new transmission. But I am trying to fight this matter because they went ahead and indicated that there is no recall on this transmission problem and like most people with this problem it was going to cost me approximately $5,000 dollars. please email me at fcecdp@yahoo.com if you are experiencing the same problem I am trying to see if the Channel 2 News in Los Angeles will help with this matter I would encourage anyone to call (323) 575-2345 Channel 2 News, so that way they can understand how serious this problem really is and lets show Jaguar that they can't be ripping off consumers.
I'm the one who made the comment on Jan 26th about my Jaguar. Well, I finally unloaded it back to a dealer. I couldn't take driving it waiting for another problem to occur. I only put 7500 miles on it since I owned it which makes a total of 69,000 miles on the car. In the 7500 miles I did drive it I dropped over $6500 dollars into it. You can imagine how that made my wife feel. I have never owned a car with so little miles on it and had to put so much money into it in order to keep it running. Say what you want about domestics, but I have put 150,000 on Chevrolet's and had half the bills that Jaguar cost me in the 8 months I owned the car. So now I drive a brand new 2007 crew cab Chevy and couldn't be happier and more stress free.
Here's my break down:
Owned my 2001 S-Type (61,000 miles when purchased) for 8 months.
Transmission replaced $5350.00
New Brakes (front) $990.00, (rear) $250.00
New center cup holder (broke 3 days after purchase) $130.00
New ash tray door (latch broke 2 months after purchase. I don't smoke. I opened one day while cleaning and it would never shut) $90.00
Headlights flashing on and off while driving at night.
Front suspension falling apart.
So I got to drive it for 8 months after wasting thousands on it.
I lost over $8,000 in the trade in and now the car sits on the lot for thousands more than they gave me. A very expensive lesson in a small amount of time. Between the repairs and the pay-off the car cost me well over $15,000 not including the payments I made on it for the 8 months I owned it. So anyone reading this needs to think well and hard before owning or keeping a Jaguar.
We are furious!!! We purchased a 2000 S-type with 59k miles on it... the test drive went VERY well... the car was a trade in for a Cadi... and now we know why. After having the car for not even a week... it over heated... while on the freeway. Well, you can guess the damage... valves bent/ lifter springs broken/ head gaskets blown.. the list goes on and on.. the car was in the shop for 2 MONTHS!!! It was returned to us only to OVER HEAT AGAIN before we got it home!!!..so, it went back to the shop... well while it was in the shop it magically (without driving it) started to make a HORRIBLE noise... which we are told is the torque converter?? We have NO idea what step to take next. The car has now been sitting in the garage for 3 months waiting for us to come up with some sort of a solution...oh, the damage from the overheating problem ended up costing us another $6500..and we still can't drive it... this is really sad. Step up to the plate Jag!!! If ANYONE gets info on a class action or a recall... can you PLEASE put us on the notify list?? My email address is k06@cox.net THANKS!
I am a dealer and recently purchased a 2000 Jaguar S-Type with 36000mi. The transmission shakes quite a bit when shifting from 3rd. to 4th. I was wondering if there is any place I should start to diagnose and fix this problem? It also misfires at idle and I wasn't sure if this may have something to do with the shifting problem.
Last month, I purchased a 2000 S-Type 3.0 Automatic for my wife's 40th birthday. The car was in mint condition, stunning looking, (like the wife, just in case she reads this), highish mileage at 100k, but with a full Jag service history, and purchased from a private source. Talk about letting the heart rule the head! Whilst driving it home on the motorway from Dublin, I was uneasy about the shift from second to third gear, but put it to the back of my mind. Two weeks ago I noticed a smell of coolant from the engine and when I checked found a burst water pipe leading from the water pump to the top of the engine. Thank God I spotted this as had the engine fried we would have been talking serious money to repair. Since then, the inevitable has happened. Gearbox fault light on, gears slipping, basically everything that I've read on your site regarding transmission problems is happening to my wife's car. Obviously the problem is a worldwide one, (I live in Ireland) and not just confined to you guys in the states.
My brother, who is a mechanic, is going to check the codes with a new software programme he's purchased to see if replacement of torque converter or transmission can possibly be avoided, and will post any results here. In the meantime, can anyone recommend a good divorce lawyer?
(By the way. Just for the record... my occupation?? I'm a flaming car dealer!!!...some expert, eh?
I recently purchased a 2001 Jaguar S-Type, what a beautiful car. The car has only 59800 miles on it.
It sure is pretty.
Unfortunately the car will not come out of reverse, into drive when it is on a slight incline. The engine will rev to 5k, when trying to go forward from a stop at a light, the car will not move. I have to jiggle the shift knob a couple of times to get it to move into gear.
This is extremely dangerous, I am afraid I will be hit from behind.
I am now looking at a 5-6 thousand dollar bill, to get it fixed.
This is very frustrating.
Is there a Class Action Suit? Does anyone know?
Wish I would have read all this before I bought mine in Aug/06
Luckily I have not had transmission problems yet (does not mean I will escape the curse) My cars problems started out, while driving at 100k on the highway my car would shut down on its own (dangerous), which would disable power brakes and my stirring. The jaguar dealer told me I would need to replace my shifter cable and shifter assembly and that this would solve the problem at the tune of $1200 I thought I would get a second opinion I took it to a local auto electric repair shop and found out that it was a relay in the fuse panel at the cost of $40.00 had him replace it and never had this problem again.
Next problem the car was idling uneven jag dealer told me the timing was off, after charging me for 11 hour of diagnostics at $111.00 per hour plus $600.00 in parts the car ran no different then when I brought in. Bring it back to the jag dealer there comment was we have to put it back on diagnostics to find the problem that they already said they repaired and now have come up with a whole new problem which is the ignition coils all 8 at a new figure of $1700 and there is still no guarantee my problem will be solve.
Is anybody having ignition coil problems or uneven idling would appreciate repair information you can share I really don' want to take it back to jag's diagnostics as it is like a slot machine you never win, but alway pay!!
I'm from Canada own a s-type v8 2000 and would like to be a part of any class action suit against jaguar (and have their diagnostic machine checked as this is were it all starts.)

I have talked to my attorney and plan on filling a class action law suit against Jaguar. I own a 2000 S model with 60000 miles and needs a new transmission. I am finding thousands of people with all kinds of issues. Please email me at Windows2vinyl@yahoo.com if you would like to be involved. Just need email address. Will respond with plan of action. Thanks, Mike.

I am a lawyer and I have a 2002 X-Type Jag, my gear box fault went on, the car meter has 100 kilometers on it, no evidence of misuse, the dealer told me it is wear and tear!!! It will cost 10,000 USD!!!
Please anyone part of a class suit send me more info so that I can file one here in Jordan. rana.t@legal-allies.com.
2001 Jaguar S-Type 3.0.
62,500 miles, going strong, and the only mechanical failure has been that of the coolant reservoir gasket (common problem). Luckily, I have an extended warranty till 2008.
A few months ago, the check engine light illuminated. Discovered that it required a new battery ($80.00) and that was that. Thanks to God that I have not encountered what others have. Therefore, I am bailing before anything does; am currently selling/trading for a 2007 Toyota Matrix XR. The wife does not like the snob appeal of luxury automobiles, as the average populace tends to exude rude behavior toward those who work hard to appreciate the finer things in life. Recently sold my E-320 to purchase a 2007 RAV-4 (Made in Japan) for this very reason. You cannot go wrong with Toyota. It seems that the higher-end vehicles squeeze you for every red cent you would have otherwise saved. Lexus, Toyota and Nissan seem to be the best at reputations for long-term quality rankings.
What ever happened to the Benz, BMW, and Jaguar is beyond my comprehension. They were once incredibly reliable and trouble-free just twenty years ago! I believe that OEM subcomponents are produced very cheaply so we can ensure mechanics/dealers receive fat paychecks! I am remaining with Toyota.
