I have a Silver Colour Peugeot 406 Executive Estate Diesel 110PS HDI.

I acquired the car in April of 2007 and it had about 107,000 miles on it. Now,March 2008 it has about 129,000 miles on it.

First problem was when the pulley wheel that carries the accessories belt started to fail. It contains a rubber damper as part of its build and this is a known problem. There was terrible rattling sound from the car as this part began to fail, luckily I got if fixed before any major damage was done. My father took it to the local Peugeot dealer and they replaced with a new part. He didn't tell me how much it cost.

Second problem was and is the Air Conditioning. This has never been working on the car since I've had it. The temperature sensor typically reads about 35 degrees even though is 10 degrees out side. I imagine that this is related to the problem as I checked the pressure and that seems OK but it never manages to cool the car down. The sensor for the estates is located differently to the saloon versions I understand. I believe that it is behind the two interior air vents or there abouts. I will check this during the next week or so - hopefully it's a connection problem and that if so I can fix it or remedy it and get it back in action.

Third Problem was that the electric mirrors and the interior lights would not operate. Traced this to a blown fuse which was easily replaced.

Fourth Problem was that someone has stolen some of the exterior rubbing strip off the front passenger (off) side wing. I just noticed it yesterday. It's terrible what happens when you are forced to park in public!

Fifth Problem is the Air Bag sensor light has begun to start flashing today so I will take a look at the seat connections to see if this will remedy the situation.

Sixth Problem is that the car would fail to accelerate. Some time later is might or might not accelerate. It progressively got worse during 3 weeks so took it to the dealer and they identified that it was a problem with the air flow sensor. That was replace with a new one, total cost of 140 Euro.

But here is what's great about the car after the criticism of specific problems above:

1. Supremely comfortable

2. Huge Load area

3. Great Roof Rails make it easy to attach my roof rack

4. Excellent mileage: Typically always greater than 50mpg

5. Great engine pulls strongly at high speed and promotes confidence

6. The fake wood trim adds a touch of class

7. The stereo system allows me to play 6 CDs, Tapes and radio and I can control through the column stalk control - genuinely excellent.

Just keep on motoring...

I have a 2000/406 LX Auto with an LPG convertion. I've had the car for a year bought at 75.000m now at 95.000m and it's been very reliable and not let me down... so far.

I've replaced the 2 rear exhaust parts due to a hole and an H7 light bulb. The AC is fine as are the brakes. The front torisons have been changed and now I'm about to do the rear ones too cause it's clonking and donking from the rear and driving me nuts, especially over the bloody speed bumps here in London I've topped it up with a 1.5lt of oil during the year I've had it and that about it.

I feel that some of you have been unfortunate and possibly got cars with poor quality control resulting from too much red wine on 'Friday afternoons'Hic!!

Also Peugeot customer care really sux. I do my own work so I just chat to the boys in the workshop if I need advice... the best way to go if you got the time.

I am a girl of 18 and drive a 406 2.0 HDi saloon. Obviously I am happy to be driving a car that is nothing like the stereotypical Corsas, Saxos and Fiestas seen being driven by most 18 year olds today.

However, a lot of the problems I have read are sounding familiar to me! It pops up with random messages all the time, even when there is nothing wrong, i.e brake fluid low.

It drinks fuel like a Ferrari unless you tootle around at 15mph.

It has no power when pulling off. I do like the car, but it definitely has its faults!!
