I have a 2003 GMC Envoy SLT and it has about 78,000 miles. About 7 months ago my left turn signal light was intermittent. 8 times out of 10 when I would want to turn left the hazard lights would turn on instead of the left turn signal. Then about 3 months ago all the dash lights went haywire. I even get the annoying tone. While I am driving I get all the lights flashing at me and the tone. Unfortunately for me, I am in the Air Force and stationed in Northern Germany. There is no dealerships here. I have read all of these reviews and read some of the same problems that I have. I was wondering if someone could tell me exactly what was wrong and how I could fix it, so that I could tell a mechanic here exactly what I need and see if they could fix it. Thank you.
We just picked up our 2003 Envoy with 133,000 km (88K miles) from the dealership this evening and drove 22 km (15 miles) home. It ran great!! The entire 22 km!!!
Our friends bought it new and traded it in without our knowledge... so we bought it. Before buying a 2-year power-train warranty for $2000, I thought I'd check out all of the comments.
The cooling fan, gas tank, blower motor and water pump have been replaced under warranty. I see by the various comments that maybe I should or maybe not...hmmm, thanks for all your comments...I'm glad we are in your club.
We have a 2003 GMC Envoy XL which we bought used and after reading all these comments I have noticed that we have gone through the same problems with the electrical, and the engine light coming on. The latest is the passenger or rear fan went on by it self and was still on even with the car off, then the fan for passenger above head turning on/off by itself. Then, just this weekend Jan5/08, my husband was waiting for me in the parking lot of the grocery store with the car on when suddenly the engine light came on. I got into the car and we drove off when we heard a loud noise coming from the front, I thought it was a truck passing us, but no truck. My husband accelerated and it seems like the car has stayed in one shift and won't move. My husband is afraid to go to the dealer because they'll charge an arm and a leg. Has anyone experienced this same problem is yes please reply. Thank you:)
I have a 2003 Envoy SLT (bought new)...I've had almost all of the problems that have been mentioned thus far...however, I have a new one to talk about! For the past few months, my car has sporadically not allowed me to shift out of park... the first time it happened, I came out of the store and couldn't leave... had to get it towed to the dealership... They told me it was a blown fuse... since then it has happened at least 10 more times! Of course, I haven't had it towed 10 times, I have gotten very used to changing the fuse on my own... I keep a box of them in my glove compartment!...Sometimes it's back to back and then it may not happen again for a few weeks... When I told the dealership about it and that I wanted them to find out why the fuse keeps blowing, they only told me that I can drop it off and hope that it does it while it's at the dealership, otherwise they won't be able to diagnose the problem. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm very irritated and a little worried that some lines may be crossed and can potentially cause a fire under my hood!
To the guy with the fuse that always blows. First, I agree that you need to try and figure out what the prob is. In the meanwhile, to make things a little better, have you tried bumping up the fuse size? If it is a 10 amp fuse, have you tried a replacement 15 or 20 amp? I'd stay away from going to big or so other component becomes the fuse and replacing that could be very expensive. It is just a thought.
I own a 2003 Envoy XL which has been a great truck since purchased. With approximately 110,000 miles I have recently started receiving "battery not charging" messages. When operating correctly, the battery gauge reads around 14V. With this issue it reads around 9V. I purchased a new battery in May07. Since it was under warranty the auto parts store replaced it. Problem solved right? wrong! Installed the new battery and "battery not charging" indicator came on and stayed on. I then thought maybe it's the alternator and had it checked. Alternator checked out. I also checked all fuses. Fuses okay, but "battery not charging" light still coming on and staying on. I know the dealer can fix this, but at what price? If you have suggestions as to what this might be please respond. It's too cold out to be stranded. Thank you.
We are the irritated owners of a 2003 Envoy XL.We purchased it used and have had the same problems as most of you. We think the we should have it painted a pretty yellow color. It has been owned by us exactly 13 months and been in for repair 15 times. We rely on this vehicle a lot as we live out of town and I am partially disabled and have a spinner knob. I have been nervous driving the vehicle and do not trust it with all of the issues we have had, We do not want to be left stranded. You would think with everyone on this forum that GM would step up to bat and discover that we are the generation buying these SUV's and we are not happy!
I am an original owner of a 2003 GMC Envoy XL. I am having the following problems, fuel tank ($1689 to repair),major gas smell with high use of fuel, speedometer, and RPM gauge out. Check Engine Light to begin a few. What I am finding to be most irritating is that there are no recalls on some of these obvious problems and then other recalls I am just now finding out about and was never notified. Very disapointed with GMC for not standing behind their products. Also not happy that there are expiration dates on recalls at least according to the local dealer. If any one has info on the Fuel tank recall please share as I have been unable to located or verify. Thank you for taking the time to read and hear my concerns.
I have a 2003 Envoy XL that I purchased used about a year ago and have just recently had a few problems with it. After driving a 500 mile road trip recently, I could hear a loud whirring noise coming from the vehicle that seems to coincide with the RPM's. At first I thought it was the transmission, but it goes through the gears just fine. Stuck 500 miles from home, I decided to go ahead and drive it home, and about halfway home the service engine soon light came on. After reading the posts here, I am wondering if this whirring sound can be the fan clutch, or if anyone else has encountered this problem. It sounds as if it's in the exhaust, perhaps, so maybe a problem with the catalytic converter? I'm at a loss, and before I take it to the dealer for diagnosis I wanted to see if anyone else had encountered anything like this, as I like to be ready when going to the dealer for repair.
I wish I found this site before I purchased this vehicle. I have a 2003 Envoy XL and I feel like just leaving it outside with the doors open and the keys in the ignition. Last night while we were driving home the truck started to sound like it was racing, but not going anywhere. My husband tells me that its not changing over to 3rd gear. Of course the warranty has ran out and we did not get the extended warranty. I have to bring it to the dealer, but I'm scared that when I heard the prices and the issues I might faint.
A few months ago my brother in-law who drives a tow truck told me he picked up 2 Envoys in one day with transmission problems. And he picks one up at least every two weeks.
I'm planning on getting rid of this car fast, very fast.
We bought our 2003 Envoy XL new. We experienced trouble with all of the recalls prior to their being issued as well as some minor repairs which were covered under the warranty. The vehicle was kept up-to-date on all oil changes, etc. Since December we have had to have the truck towed to the dealership three times for no-start. First time they replaced the battery. Second the fan clutch and ignition switch. I wonder what they will come up with when they spin the wheel this time? I don't think they ever found the actual cause of the problem. My guess is a computer glitch. I think it's time to car shop.
I just took our 2003 GMC Envoy XL to my mechanic due to a strong gas odor! Yes, the tank is cracked. I called the local GMC dealership and gave them the VIN for the vehicle. They informed me that there is a corrective piece that is covered under warranty for some of these Envoys. It is based on the VIN number. Try calling the dealership and see if this helps! Also, we just replaced a cracked exhaust manifold! Envoy has 140,000 miles now! It goes to the dealership Monday so we will see if this gets resolved without spending $1200.
I have a 2003 Envoy XL with a V8.
My check engine light and low engine power lights go on and off every few days. I've had it in and out of the dealership, and they cannot identify the problem. The last trip they said there were multiple codes coming up on the computer, and they think that one problem can cause another and so forth until you have multiple issues that they cannot resolve, because they cannot find the originating source.
I was told that there was a carbon build-up in the butterfly valve of the throttle body. I had that cleaned out and the problem stopped for a few days. When the low engine power light comes on, I cannot go more than 10 mph and that is on a flat road. It cannot pull a hill with the light on.
This week the overhead console started leaking water during a mild rain. My driver seat is in a new position ever few days.
My mirrors move around. I have set and reset my seat and mirror positions with the driver information center as well, and reprogramming the option 1 on the driver door. I put my driver 1 key and keyfob in to start the car today and it promptly came up "Driver 2". I have no idea what to do and the GMC dealership is of no help.
I also was told on a recent visit that my rack and pinion seals were leaking, so I purchased an aftermarket kit to install.
Every time I take the vehicle in there is another problem to add to the list. Why do these vehicles have so many problems? Has anyone else found a solution for this?
I love the vehicle for the options and the smooth ride and power, but sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it!
My 2003 envoy has had the following problems since purchasing it used in 2006:
58,000 miles: O2 sensor went bad. Fixed it myself for $70.
92,000 miles: Cam shaft adjustment arm broke. Part not too expensive, but labor will kill you. $875.00
111,000 miles: Fan clutch stuck. Can be driven, but is loud and hurts gas mileage considerably. Expansive part: $350 plus labor (being done this week).
I'm selling this vehicle soon, and start buying old, simple trucks!!
I have a 2003 Envoy.
Looking for insight on the following:
1. When I turn the ignition to power on there is a clicking coming from inside the dash that lasts for about 20 -30 seconds and stops. No impact on performance. Thoughts?
2. My AC is erratic where the cool air comes out sporadically. Like this for a couple of years Thoughts?
