I have a 2003 GMC Envoy XL V6 4x4.. I wish I would have read these comments before I bought it.
In the past year I have had to replace the fuel tank (got money back a few months ago thanks to GM FINALLY issuing a recall), the rear air controls no longer work in the back, left passenger power window motor went out, power steering hose went out, power steering pump went out, cam sensor, catalytic convertor, the fan clutch is now going out, and my low beams/daytime running lights no longer work.
This vehicle is great aside from the mechanical money pit it has become. I am afraid to keep it. From the list of problems I have read there are still a few that I have not come across which means (knowing my truck) I will. The dealer wants to charge 800.00 to fix the fan clutch. Luckily, I know someone at a parts store and a mechanic to put it in. It will end up costing approx 250.00. I am not sure what the cost will be to fix the headlights, since I am not sure what's wrong. If anyone has had problems with low beams, please post a comment.
We have had our 2003 Envoy SLT for 3 years. Needless to say I am ready to get rid of it. After or around Jan08 Check Engine light loves to come on. Under the hood there is a ticking sound when the vehicle is in park or is stopped. Truck likes to not start, bought a new battery, still doesn't like to start well. The key wouldn't come out of the ignition so we had to put ignition switch in. Last week the fan clutch went out. Then started sounding like it was running high like a whining sound. Got that fixed but still thinks it has a little whining sound. Last fall we did have the fuel smell problem that kind of went away on its own. This past winter our 4WD would get stuck so we ended up having to buy a new switch for that. I asked a service man today if they get the Envoys in a lot for repairs and he gave me "that look" so that made my decision to continue my search for a new vehicle. I would never suggest buying one of these. All it has done is give us grief and an empty wallet : (
I have already added a comment but I forgot that My heater and AC wants to come on when it wants to come on!!! We have to buy a new switch for that!
My 2003 GMC Envoy has remained nearly service free for five years. One problem I had was sudden acceleration causing me to hit an abutment. This happened one time and the dealer could find nothing wrong. My recent experience was with the service engine soon light. Does anyone know how to reset the light?
This is in referral to the engine light. If you have a Auto Zone near you, have them plug it in for errors then ask them if you can reset it. They will not push the button to reset it; you will have to do that. But I will tell you that your gas cap may not be on tight; if you tighten it, then drive it for a little bit, it will go off. And it came on for me yesterday and my fan clutch is faulty. GOOD LUCK.
For anyone with the gas tank problem. GMC will repair or replace the gas tank at no charge if your GMC falls with 10 years or 150,000 miles. While I have not yet had this problem I did reeive a letter from GM stating this. This is not a recall letter so do not confuse this. This is a letter (dated June 2007) that if this problem exist GMC will fix the problem. If you dealer has charged you for this it is wrong. You should call GMC at 1,.66.996.9463.
I have a 03 GMC ENVOY with the same problems listed by others. Bad Ignition switch caused all of the gauges to go hay wire and would not start. Bad Clutch Fan, had to replace, Service Engine Light Soon- Had Fuel Tank replaced. Temperature Sensor replaced. My Cat. Converter is bad and smells when running. Blower Motor Module (Blower Motor Resistor) had to be replaced to fix HVAC system. These are common problems with all ENOYS. Defective/cheap OEM parts.
Does anyone know the difference between a blower motor resistor and blower motor module? We own a 2003 GMC Envoy and purchased the resistor. When I removed what I thought to be the resistor, I found there to be a different part. I know replacement parts may look different. The new part mounts right to the same spot and is shaped just like the old part. The difference is the female portion of the connector coming from the control. The original part has a 3 wire clip and the new part has a 7 or 8 wire clip. The wires with a two wire clip match perfectly to the blower itself. Any suggestions? Thanks.
My fiance and I purchased a 2003 Envoy SLY with 42K miles in August of 2007. At first I LOVED it, great power from the V6, and had a ton of gadgets. But is went downhill fast, the gauges go haywire when you turn the ignition on, sometimes it starts sometimes it won't. 2 times in the last week I was driving around 60 MPH and the gauges went nuts, and the car shut off and the computer screen read "service brake system soon". After reading some of these comments, I believe this Envoy will be gone as sooon as the issues are fixed.
First off, the Envoy doesn't come with a V-6. It has an I-6 derived from the bullet-proof decades-old design going back to the 1930's.
As for your problems, I'd advise taking the vehicle to a GOOD GM service department that has technicians who are well-trained in diagnosing and correcting computer problems.
This was a problem with the Trailblazer and Envoy early on. Before buying our 2003 (new) I made sure that our dealership had well-qualified technicians who had had special training in setting the computer (which, unfortunately, controls just about EVERYTHING in the Envoys).
I'm a mechanic and car enthusiast. Before buying the Envoy we drove lots of SUV's. NONE came remotely CLOSE to competing in any way, shape or form with the Envoy. In the 6 years we've had it, it has not had a single problem other than a new battery in late 2006.
You might want to read my review and comments on our Envoy before being too harsh on yours. It is in the 2003 section and is entitled "The best SUV for the money".
My service engine light has been going on and off quite regularly. I failed emissions with a 01028 (? I can't remember) code, but it was the thermostat. I had it replaced today, as well as the sensor because it was unknown which had the problem. As soon as I pulled out the drive, my car acted like it wanted to die when I turned the a/c on. Now my a/c blows from everywhere except the dash (even when it's set on the dash setting, it blows on the floor) and it loses power and goes dead when I'm idling??? What the...??? HELP!! MY mechanic says that he cleared all the codes and the computer has to reset itself, I guess like add the codes back in to operate (?) But now, when I use the a/c, it's dying on me. Any suggestions???
My suggestion (I'm a mechanic) is see a GOOD mechanic. The computer problems with the Envoy/Trailblazer/Rainier/Bravada line is virtually ALWAYS an inept mechanic who is NOT certified in servicing these computers (which control EVERYTHING from the mirrors to the Engine).
I don't buy the "computer will reset itself" line for one second. It sounds like your mechanic does not know what he is doing and wishes you'd go away.
Before buying our 2003 Envoy, I was well aware of this issue and made VERY sure that the dealership I bought the car from had computer-certified technicians. Shortly after our warranty was out, we had the same problem you mentioned with the A/C. Our GMC dealer fixed it at no cost to us, and we have never had another problem of any kind with this vehicle.
It has 60,000+ miles and has had NOTHING except a battery in late 2006. It still has the original brake pads and Michelin tires. It is the first car my wife has kept more than 2 years since 1988. She says she NEVER wants to get rid of this car. Considering that it looks, runs and drives exactly like it did the day we bought it, gets 24mpg on the highway and has incredible power for an I-6 (much faster than previous V-8 Explorers) I told her she was welcome to keep it as long as she wants.
250,000 miles is not at all out of the average for a GM vehicle (our family's Buick has 277,000+ miles) so it may last us a very long time. Please, find a mechanic who is not going to give you the runaround. These are the finest SUV's currently on the market.
Thanks for the comment. I actually just came back from over there and he "cleaned the carbon out of the throttlebody". He sprayed a whole bunch of wd40, drove it around the block and now it's not dying, but I notice how it idles more. so I'm going to have a competent mechanic (who I spoke with and said that the p128 means low coolant and had nothing to do w/a thermostat if it's throwing out codes) to come look at it tomorrow. WOW!! I hope this works. I looked at his lot and there are a lot of older model cars that he's workin on and I'm seeing that he knows nothing about the "new breed" of vehicles. When he talks, he usually says "most cars". MAN, you foolin' with a 2003 GMC ENVOY, sophisticated model!!! COME ON!! But thanks for your comment... I appreciate it.
I have a 2003 GMC Envoy 4x4, had it to two mechanics and it throws a code: 1345 camcoil misfire, and nobody can figure out what's wrong. The cruise doesn't work, my heater control stays at hot and won't go to A/C. Anybody have this problem or any info, e-mail me at dmkids@gvtel.com
My a/c is blowing out of the floor instead of the dash when the switch is set on dash only. Any suggestions of what this might be? Anybody know about the relay switch?
