"no import or rice burner can beat a mustang gt"
I would bet that my 'Quest or GSX can beat your mustang GT. Next car will probably be an Evo... But I agree, if you have a 'Quest, or a DSM, you had better be prepared to do some wrenching.
"the 96-98 mustang gt's were lacking some power. But that is because they were cheaper cars than their competition."
I am fairly certain that the base z28 was cheaper than a GT mustang and it had considerably more HP.
The Conquest sounds interesting, but I can hardly believe a 150 HP four cylinder even in a sub 3000lb car can outrun a 88-92 Mustang GT, I would strongly bet that stock, both ran high to mid 15's in the 1/4 mile. But of course the turbo crew will always benchrace as much as possible to talk up the often disrespected cars.
I owned an 87 Conquest TSI turbo and it was a very quick car no doubt. Unfortunately, it had a lot of problems and wasnt very reliable.. I have since owned a 90 Mustang LX 5.0, 95 Pontiac Trans Am with the LT 1 motor, 2000 Ram Air Trans AM with the LS 1 corvette motor, and a 04 Mustang GT with several mods to it... that 2000 ram air trans am in stock form will eat that conquest up I assure you and my 04 mustang gt will do the same thing to that conquest.. but I do think the conquest tsi was ahead of its time (including the beautiful interior) and was a fun car to drive.
I own a 1987 TSi. I love the car. But I saw in the posts that its rare to find one in stock condition. Well I have one that is emaculate. I would be willing to sell her to the right person for the right price. You can eat off the undercarriage in this car, the interior is spotless. It's a white with burgundy leather interior. If interested I can send pics... you can contact me at weldingu@earthlink.net The car has won at NOPI once... the only time I went and the last time i'll go... hahaha It has sense won numerous car show awards.. must see to appreciate... let me know.
I had an '88 Conquest way back when I was in high school (in the mid 90's). These cars WILL NOT beat a stock 5.0 Mustang in the quarter mile... not even close. Much less even a '93 Z28. I used to race my Conquest at an elevation of 5000ft in Pueblo, CO and even there, the stock NA Mustangs would walk away from me after about 60 MPH. The very best ET I got with mine (even after I rebuilt the motor) was a 16.5 at around 90MPH. I ran just about every weekend in the summer...16.6-16.8 was usually my ET. Remember, I was at 5000 feet of elevation, but still, no chance against even a stock 5.0 Mustang. My stock WRX wagon runs about the same ET as a lightly modded 5.0 Mustang (about 14.8 at 98MPH), and I assure you any stock WRX would hand a Conquest its ass hands down.
It was a fun car for high school. They suck in the snow and I'd say that it had to be the least reliable car I have ever owned. In fact, my '56 Chevy that was in dire need of a restoration was more reliable than that DSM piece of crap. Every six months something major went wrong with that thing. I'll never buy another DSM product for the rest of my life. There's a very good reason they aren't around anymore... they all broke down and are in the junkyards!
Look at reality, Mustangs are fast. Duh! It is a V8 power plant, but they are also a dime a dozen, I think my mom even has one.
Look at the people that own a Quest - stock or not, the parts are harder to find and the car is unbelievably rare.
Do I like to go fast yeah! But as well as going fast, I like to have something that most people don't. And on that note, I will stay with the Quest. For a small 4 banger, the Quest might get beat by a V8 but not by much. Keep your Quest. Speed isn't everything, rarity pays off in the end.
I just bought a 88' Conquest TSi. Even with a exhaust leak and the need of a tune up it beat a 97' Supercharged Acura Integra... That speaks for it self, and about the car being unreliable I think you all just need to take care them like your supposed to.
I own 5 88 to 89 Conquest. I wouldn't have any V8 car. I know they are not reliable, but they are a great car to look and to drive.
I'm from the Bronx. I own a 1989 Conquest SHP that just turned 100K on the odo, I personally feel this is an all-time great!
Growing up my brother had an 86, PHAT! with the all mighty "83 HOOD" & it went fast... I must say, @ 145MPH she feels great! Planted to the ground like the roots to a 100 year old pine tree. I was offered $6000 for her & happily told the guy "nope, not for sale..."

I also noticed that a few guys say the "Mustangs" are unbeatable. I smoked a 2000 stang in Jersey the other day on I-80 on my way to p.a. doing @ least 130mph. I slowly saw his headlights disappear in my rear view. I guess all he saw was "Conquest TSi" on the rear end... this is a reliable car, only, only
if you take care of it!
I don't think passing other traffic while going 130 constitutes you "blowing them away". If that's the case, wow, my little 2.0 jetta has destroyed a few vettes, mustangs, DSMs, minivans, trucks, econo cars, etc... damn I'm good.
:P.
Yeah, going faster than someone who is thinking about how many points it will cost on their license is not like beating them in a race. Nor does flooring it at a stoplight when the other guy is tuning the radio, or passing somebody when they're just starting to roll from the stoplight, constitute "blowing them away off the line."
I had a 89 conquest (new) coming out of the toll gate at Miami turnpike, there was a 5.0 stang beside me. We both took off at the same time and it seemed he took me off the jump, but not by much, then I hit 2nd and passed him, but we didn't stop there... I did not let up on the gas until I pegged the speedometer @ 145mph AND THE CAR WAS STILL ACCELERATING!!! (oh, 100% stock) That's when I had enough and let up on the gas. I beat a lot of stangs with my conquest and for 21,000 in 89, it was a great bang for the buck. I wish I still had that car!!!
OK I'm seriously thinking about buying an 88 conquest and I already have the guy holding it for me.. I see that people say it's a very unreliable car, but I also see that it can be if you take care of it.. what would you constitute "taking care of it"? like checking fluids and changing the oil every 3k mls.. or would you consider it not driving fast and never pinning her? email me at hiimtroymcclure@hotmail.com.
OK, so heres the deal, people seem to have a misconception of what can beat what and how to stake the reliability of the conquests. Ill be perfectly honest I own a 87tsi and it does have a few problems and it probably will have a few problems more compaired to the N/A vehicles, but that's what makes them unique, its strange to mustang and camaro owners to see this 4 cylinder car keeping up with them, and that's the feeling that conquest owners love, sure you could go buy a talon or eclipse and get the same power, but what fun would that be, half of the people on the road don't even know what a quest is lol. It all depends on the driver and how well then know the vehicle and its capabilities. So yeah the mustang might have more power, but it doesn't matter if the either one of the drivers aren't familiar with theyre vehicles. And the cool thing is this... you can put a boost controller on a conquest and turn up 100 horse in less than half an hour, I don't see many mustangs doing that. Honestly the car has its issues, but after a good rebuild and all of the problems taken care of you end up with a high 12 second car out of a 4 cylinder. At least people like the conquests everyone I know thinks ford is trash, you really think that people made all those acronyms for ford because they like the car? lol.
