To the 2nd Apr commenter, a D-Turbo will either be fitted with the 1.9 92 bhp or the 2.0 90 bhp if its one of the later HDi models. The 1.9 is a bit laggier and noisier, but is still a lovely smooth engine with a stonking rush when the boost cuts in. The 2.0 is smoother, quieter and much more linear in its delivery. Much more driveable, and will crack 50 mpg if driven half gently. Maybe not as exciting as the old 1.9 though which feels genuinely fast in the higher gears when on boost. In my experience though if you want a 1.9 get an early one. The later (phase 2) shape ones I've driven seem flatter low down - maybe something to do with emissions regs. Drive a few and see for yourself. You'll love it on boost though. Stick it in 4th at 50mph and squeeze it on. It feels great!
To the guy above, it sounds like there's some kind of problem with the turbo or associated plumbing. You don't get a sudden rush with the HDi engine, but you should definitely feel it squeeze you back in the seat. The car should feel lively and responsive - if it doesn't get it checked out.
For the Gentleman who owned the Escort and has developed a ticking noise from the engine which changes with the revs. I too had a similar problem with my 306 (2000). I took it to the garage and was informed that it was something to do with a pulley holding a belt between the engine and gear box. I am no technical chap I'm afraid, but when the engineer at the garage looked at it, he turned the engine on and off very quickly and told me not to take it away until it was repaired. Repaired OK, no further issues until the car met an unfortunate end after a puncture on the motorway and hitting the central reservation. Lovely cars on the whole, I went and looked at another today.
Cheers.

Anyone who says the hdi is not a good engine needs to get their head tested. My mate has a chipped 306 and he can beat a Golf GT TDi with 130bhp. He's had 130mph on a flat road and 0-60 in 8 seconds.

To the the person who wrote the comment on the 26th April. Your mate may be able to beat a standard Golf 1.9tdi, but he had to chip his 2.0 hdi to do it!!!
I own a hdi and lets not beat about the bush about this, it is no performance car. If it was, Peugeot would never have built the 306xsi, 306si6 etc...
I have owned a few performance cars over the years, but have been forced out of them by silly fuel prices and have ended up in my 306hdi. It is good car that serves its purpose very well, i.e. cheap motoring. All this talk of performance makes me laugh. If it was so good why put the engine under extra strain, for which it was never designed, by chipping it?
If you want a properly quick diesel, buy the Golf, keep your warranty intact by not fiddling with it, and then you can blow away standard 306hdis.
I've been reading all these comments about chipping the 306 HDI turbos and like the sound of it. I'm considering buying a standard 306 HDI turbo and getting it chipped myself. Will the chip invalidate my insurance? will it show up in MOTs? this is all I'm concerned about really. If anyone can shed some light on this that would be great?
Plenty of tuners in the UK are now offering remaps for the non-intercooled Hdi90 engine.
Celtic tuning offer around 125bhp and 215lbft at the OEM engine speeds for max power and max torque, so the engine is still hugely flexible.
Considering a kerb weight of 1135kg and very close gearing relative to the usefull rev range of the engine, it is ample to see off even a 306 Xsi with 135bhp.
I've just sold my 306 GTi6 which was pretty quick and moved to a Hdi90. I'm planning on doing a chip tune, but would really like to intercool the engine if money allows.
Intercooling and remapping will make the engine reach 150bhp and over 250lbft easily, as it does in the Hdi110 engine (same as 90, just with an OEM intercooler). I think this would be on par with the Gti6 point to point, though not as fun or sound as good it'd be a very potent point to point car with the lower weight and handling of a gti6!
Yes, it's pretty naff at 90bhp, but it has potential with a remap to 125bhp, and would be a true hot hatch with 150bhp and a lot more torque!
What a shame Peugeot didn't offer a Hdi110 engine in the 306, it would have, like the 306 Gti6 before it, been one of THE derv hot hatches once remapped. They missed out big time there!
The dervs are a lot quicker than many think, mainly off the motorway and dual carriageways where their handling can shine! If your after a straight line rocket get a VAG turbo, if your after a fun drive get a Hdi90 remapped to 125bhp and have some fun with that sublime under-powered chassis!

For the Gentleman who owned the Escort and has developed a ticking noise from the engine. I had exactly the same problem as you described and it turned out to be the lower pulley so it was not cheap to repair. It cost me £230 pounds to fix with labour included. Apparently this is something very common with the 306 HDi engines. My car had 105K miles when this happened.
I suggest you get it fix ASAP since the pulley may come out and cause a lot damage on the engine which would be very costly to repair.
All the best.
Alfonso.
Hi, I was just wondering if all HDI's are turbo or not! I'm looking or one and I wasn't sure. Many thanks phil.
Just bought my 306 HDi about a month ago. It has been chipped too. And as for the guy that disagrees about the HDi not beating a Saxo VTR, that's a load of rubbish. They have more torque then a VTR, and when chipped they have more Bhp. Now sitting @ 120Mph it sits about 4100ish Rpm.
Had to get a new catalytic converter as the original was leaking. With the new cat on, it is soooooo much slower. It's unbelieveable, the car sounds suffocated. I think a De-Cat is worth looking into, and a service as I'm 350 miles overdue my service. Yeah, it's only a diesel... so what. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May all said and agree that diesels are catching up with petrols.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough estimate as to what an intercooler would cost including fitting, for the 306 HDi turbo, as I know the car doesn't come with one which limits the remapping process. I'd like to take my car up to 150bhp, but need an intercooler for this. If anyone could explain how I would go about doing this and how much it would cost, that would be great. Thanks.
Hi there thanks everyone for your help to my comment earlier on in the year.
Now I am looking to buy a 306 d turbo for my 1st car and was hoping that someone may know of one being sold within the cornwall devon area.
Many thanks
andreas.
I think a lot of people are over exaggerating with the figures here. either that or my hdi is the slowest ever made. its chipped by collin's (now 120bhp), k'n'N panel filter plus a bleed valve and boost gauge and the most she will do is 110mph. that's flat out at 4000rpm on the motorway with 18psi boost running through it. whats going on here?

110MPH with 120BHP. Think you've something wrong with your car. I have a 206 D-Turbo, magazines say 112MPH top speed, but I've had 118mph (downhill) out of it... and it only has 90BHP.
There must be something wrong with your 306 HDI mate because the standard 90 BHP version in the book says it'll do 112 MPH.
Thanks for the comments guys. ime having a new clutch put in it this weekend as the bite is very high and is slipping slightly. I've got a suspicion I could of cought my exhaust on something with lowering my car 60mm. The mechanics giving it all a good look over for me whilst doing the clutch.
