Add me to the list people.
Driving home one night one window suddenly doesn't work.
I can hear the motor still working when I hit the switch, but whatever holds the window has obviously broken off.
Well, this sounds pretty much epidemic. I too have just had a 2000 Elantra sedan's driver's side window fail to roll back up again. Like others, it sounds like the motor is trying to move the window, but nothing ever happens.
I have a 2000 elantra. First the timing belt broke and bent the valves at 50,000 miles. I replaced the engine at a cost of 1200.The replacement engine was used with 40,000 miles. I have not fixed the driver side and the back seat passenger side windows yet. They quit working at about the same time... at 40,000.Right after the warranty expired. No more new Hyundais for me.
Great Car --- poorly engineered windows! Bought my daughter a 2000 elantra last year with 42,000 miles on it, that came with a "Carfax" report from dealer. There was no mention of any such window problems. Last night, she had the driver's side window fall down while on the road and had to drive the final
250 miles of her trip home (in the rain), with it down. Luckily, at a truck stop in Virginia, a kind trucker helped her fashion a cover to close the opening with a pizza box!!!
Come on Hyundai exec's, fix the problem? Bet your kids don't have to travel home with a "Papa John's" box protecting your family from the elements! Think I'll just buy a used door from a salvage yard, probably cheaper?
By all means go to your local junk yard for your window repairs/parts.I had 2 windows fixed for 150.00..Believe it or not that is really cheap. Check for yourself. I got a used engine with 40,000 miles plus they installed it for a total of 1200.00.Add a new radiator and my window repairs and my total was 1500.00.My car is a 2000 elantra. Timing belt broke at about 50,000 miles and ruined the engine. thus the new one. Went ahead and had windows fixed too. Junk yard also gave 90 day warranty on engine.
Why doesn't anyone fix the window themselves instead of paying a couple hundred dollars? Go to a junk yard. Ask for a window motor/regulator that will fit an 00 Elantra. They'll locate one for you, and test it to make sure it works. Buy it. Fix the problem yourself. Cost me $40 and took a half hour to do - all you need is a screwdriver and someone to help hold up the window when you reassemble the door. The Haynes repair manual ($13) walks you through the entire process. It's so much easier (and cheaper) to fix things yourself.
The rear driver side window on our 2000 Elantra just failed too. Same story as all the comments above...
To the July 3 post. Sure you can go to all the trouble and fix it yourself. That is not the point. The point is the windows are crap!
Wow amazing the comments on the window regulators/ motors I guess I should not be surprised though. My front window regulator just went on my 2000 wagon. The Motor is fine (although I won't be surprised if it goes as soon as I get my door back together. The problem is the steel cable broke or at least a couple threads did causing a little birds nest of steel threads that wouldn't allow it to move. All that I truly need to replace on this is the steel cable however I am going to have to need to know the exact length and position of the middle nut on the cable. After it came unwound and the fact that I had to cut the cable in a couple of places I can't just piece back together the correct length. After reading these comments my guess by best bet is to call a couple of junk yards and find a regulator assembly. I just wanted to comment on the "why don't you just fix it yourself comment though. 1. Yes it is possible to fix and much cheaper. 2. If you are not handy with cars though it will take you in the range of hours not a half hour. 3. there are a lot of things in a car door and the door design assures you that they are in the least accessible position so do it with a friend. 4. make sure you mark where everything was removed so that reassemble isn't a guessing game.
I just had the same problem with my 2000 Hyundai Elantra. My passenger side window broke about a month ago and last week I was driving and heard a "pop" noise just to see my passenger rear window go down. Seems to be a problem in the wiring since the motor still functions and the window will go down just not up. I live in Florida too so rust is also an issue with these cars had two of my door stops rust and break off as well. At least the car hasn't had any engine problems, yet.
Same thing happened to me with my rear passenger side window. I didn't use it all that often, but one day it wouldn't roll up without someone helping it up and then it fell down all-together. I tried to fix it, but the motor that should've worked with it didn't. Instead we tied the cables tightly, so the window will at least stay up without tape (that seems too dangerous). It's way too much to have a professional fix it and I don't use that window, so for now the solution will be fine. I just really hope none of my other windows have a problem.
I own a 1999 Hyundai Elantra station wagon. It uses the same exact doors as the Elantra sedan. Window problems?? Let's talk. I've replaced 5 window regulators in the driver's side door. One regulator in each of the back doors. Now keep in mind that the back windows have been put down a maximum of maybe 20 times since I've owned the car, and I am the original owner. I've complained to Hyundai Corporate this week, since this latest regulator cost me about $300.00 to have installed today. Hyundai just kept saying... "sir, the car is out of warranty now". My complaint is, this has been a recurring problem since I've owned the car. NOT ACCEPTABLE HYUNDAI. Hyundai then told me, (the customer service rep's name was Chelsea), that they know of NO PROBLEMS with their window regulators. Now, I've just found this great website, which confirms my suspicions on this. Any attorneys out there who want to take on a class-action suit against Hyundai about this?? This is just ridiculous.
While I had the warranty, I have had several things fixes. My battery failed within the first three months. It happened over a weekend and I did not know what it was, so I rented a car. The dealership said they could not reimburse me for my rental, but they helped me submit a claim to Hyundai. Amazingly, Hyundai reimbursed me in full for my rental car. At about 10,000 miles I had to have my front rotors turned... the warranty would not cover it because they considered it normal wear and tear. At 20,000 miles I had to have new spark plugs and wires... which was not a covered part, they considered it maintenance. During my first five years of ownership, I also had to have a new radiator and temperature gauge replaced because the one that came with the car exploded, or something like that. To, this day, and five mechanics later, it still leaks a little... Hyundai did not cover this repair. They did cover replacing some wheel bearings, though. During the warranty, my drivers side window was repaired four times, passenger side three times, and both back windows twice. My drivers side window broke again the sixth year, but is thankfully stuck in the up position. It was diagnosed as needing a new regulator. And now... I am having major electrical problems. My headlights come on when I push on the brakes, my rear window brake light comes on when I turn on my headlights, and this seems to come and go. The Power-train warranty has replaced something that was not firing correctly in the engine and a UV joint (or whatever the equivalent of a drive shaft is). My front tie rod is loose as well. And I have taken my car in for all of it's scheduled checkups!!!
My PASSANGER window went 1st under the warranty then the left back window went shortly after the warranty expired they wanted way too much to repair it. I used a plastic wood shim to hold the window up just shove it down till it grabs and break it off. also battery went twice and the latch that keeps the door from opening to far rusted out and would close the door so bolt cutters fixed that problem. the FUEL sensor thing went out 500 bucks for that 300 to change trans fluid the car was fine till the warranty expired. oh and now makes a bad sound when turning the wheel.
My 2000 hyundai elantra driver's side window just broke.
