I had bought a 97 Coupe new and it was widely known that Toyota designed the Cavalier at that time. The comment on name and perceived quality is so true. Look at the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe. Consider the cost of up keep on a high end BMW or MB per a year and listen to the owner of the car talk about how their 150K mile car drives like it is still new. But they never take into account they spend $7-10K a year just to keep that new feeling. So they are driving a 10 year old car that cost 80-100K dollars new, spending another $10K a year servicing it and can't rationalize they spend as much every year in maintenance and depreciation than a new Malibu cost. I guess in the end it's not really about quality, but about people sitting around sipping wine talking about their Beamer. Not about what is the best car and is most economical for the pocket book. But what looks good in the parking lot of the country club. Then when they realize they just spent as much to service their 10 year old car as a new car costs they throw in the Great Quality argument to justify it in their own minds.
This is the original writer of the review. To the person who said GM builds the Subaru Impreza - sorry lad, but this car is Built by Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan. Indeed, my Subaru has
the letter "J" in the VIN, which does mean it's built in Japan.
I still stand behind my review, the old Cavalier was decent enough for A-to-B transportation... the insurance was dirt cheap... and parts - lots of parts. If you're into J-body you can visit Jbody.org and get some really good advice.
Cheers.
I find the 2004 cavalier road noise to be unacceptable. I'm going to fill mine full of noise dampening mat before I go deaf.
