1997 Proton Wira 1.6XLi from Malaysia - Comments

I am driving Proton Wira 1998 model in Doha, Qatar since year 2004. I am the second owner of the car. I had changed the clutch plate just 5 months before. Recently I had taken my car for Jack Wash and noticed after that I am having difficulties in gear transmission. While driving I find it so difficult to change the gear. What could be the reason? A friend of mine in Doha, told me that the transmission problem could be due to Jack Wash? Is that true? Anyone has got answer? Do I have to now check my gearbox to fix the problem?

Hi, I'm driving a wira 1.6 XLI auto transmission, manufactured 1996. As commented before, the cornering and speed wise consider good for an average driver like me. Problems are:

-ACCESSORIES i. e power window jammed especially when its raining & central locking.

-ENGINE: most of the engine's gaskets easily leaks after few months-need to overhaul and can cost roughly RM1K

-AUTO GEAR: The gear changes not smooth, early morning its like the car has no pick up (maybe the clutch problem),when you press harder the rpm can go more than 6,000 rpm, but its like gear slip.. no pick up. What will be the solution for this problem? Do I have to fix the gear-can cost RM3K.

Hi Every One, I'm Jacky from Penang, I new here, Actually I agree Wira A/B 1.6 (A) & (M) are the quite stable car to compare other proton car model. the most stable are the older Proton Saga and Iswara, after maybe can choose Wira A/B 1.6XLI, the problem is 1.6XLI gasket always kacau, and Auto g/box also also damage, must very care servicing of G/box. I also got one Wira A/B 1.6XLI (M), quite powerfull the speed, but now I need to over/H coz my engine sound hear not too solf already. This car around 10years, I try to maintance it good condition, but also can't, maybe that is life time, yes talk about Engine Oil, for Wira 1.6 the best we using normal 20W50, 10W40 or beter Semi/Synthetic? but if you write to car cataloge they recomend we using 20w/50 enough, is we need to follow? or we can using eighter 10W40 or S/Synthetic Engine Oil? I have a wira 1.6Xli. Now 8 years already bought on November 1999. mileage 240,000. Engine still in good condition. Only the G Box condition. Poor shifting. Just waiting for the moment to Over Haul the G Box. Performance wise. Still best as ever. I am lucky with this wira I think. Thanks God.

I used wira 1.6 year 1999.

Performance OK, but the main problem is fuel...

I think too much used fuel compare to gen2 or waja.

They also 1.6 engine too..

I don't know if other wira 1.6 have a same problem like me.

Hey, sorry to said all... today I just changed a new gearbox for the Wira/ 4G91 (mitsubishi engine) 4A212 gear box to 4A222 Gearbox!!!... know how much it cost??? RM1450 gearbox only!!! then the bad news is still need to modified the engine mounting from perdana!!!

So my advise to all you people is that, for all (fuel injection engine with Power/ Economic) gearbox please make sure you service the gearbox frequently!!! and used DIII oil in range!! (ofcos the best using Mitsubish oil) every 5000km gear oil... then after 15K km, then the filter!!!

Of when the gearbox started to response slowly... then === you need to prepare money to change the transmission already!!!...

P/S: the best model of Proton make! still is the WIRA!!! that has a lot of half-cut choice and model in market!!!

Hi, I m using 1.6XLi 1996 wira sedan.

I saw many people have gear box problem, happen to me one time, but after that, I no more face that problem.

Change gear box to imported gear box (second hand fr japan is good, no need new, no need recon, no need overhaul gear box) just change, not expensive. If you want cheap, then your Wira 1.6XLi can change 1.5 Imported Gear Box, Imported 1.5 GBox is 4Tranmissions, local is 3, Big Different.

After I change very smooth, till now is good condition, pick up increase too, go genting no problem.

Auto gear oil must use imported, if use local, then can spoil the gear box, I use Eneos, Great.i will never change brand. This oil is Good.

Engine oil 20-50 is the best for old car.

Total Body must give the experience mechanics to repair.

If spoil, then change second hand total body from japan, is great. when service car, can clean up total body too. so that always in clean condition.

I got the Proton Wira 1.6XLi (MANUAL) on the year of 2005. I bought it as a second hand. B.t.w, the actual of manufacturing year is 1999. And I got the information from the old owner that the Proton Wira 1.6 XLi that I bought from him is an Export Model. The interior is a bit difference. But now, I'm still confuse either my car is Export Model or not... Is it available for PROTON WIRA 1.6 XLi in Export Spec.???
