I have always been a admirer of german engineering having owned four BMw's and one Volkwagen. April 06' I purchased my first Porsche a 78 911sc as a second car. A few mechanicals problems along the way in the past 3,700 miles, but how engaging the car is to drive never stops.

Man it's great!, the sound, the power, the looks!
There have to be some things done, but it's in great shape.

1983 Porsche 911 SC Targa : All I can say is that with 175k miles on the ORIGINAL engine the thing still has great compression in all cyclinders. I have the records dating back to the original owner I am number 3 if you include the two sisters who owned it first. No problems, but I warn you, drive it. Don't let it sit too long without at least warming it up and getting the seals lubricated at least once a month or you will have a very expensive repair bill. Again the only problem I see is the AC, but it's a TARGA, who needs AC??
Also stay on top of the chain tensioners, if you have the early model tensioners do the upgrade. These cars were made for racing, if you drive them "most of the time" like the classic they are, they will last forever, built more like an airplane than a car.
I have an 82sc and decided at the 140,000 mile mark to give it a complete rebuild with a few special parts. It is bullet proof and with more horsepower- will be even MORE fun. Looking forward to having her back in the stable so we can drive again!
I have just acquired a 1989 Porsche Carrera and love it. However I have noticed a hard describe eggy/oily smell in the cabin while driving that becomes a little stronger with the windows down. Have others noticed this? What could it be?
I just bout a 1983sc targa, it has 75000 miles on it and runs great, it is absolutely the the most amazing and fun car to drive. Should have bought one years ago.
I myself have a 1986 Carrera Cabriolet, chiffon white with dark blue leather interior and dark blue top, color matched white Ronal R9 7's and 8's, upgraded to the H5 lights with color matched bezels, Becker Mexico Professional radio from the late 90's, leather stitched dash, the whole car "stock", absolutely fantastic car, perhaps only being matched by my other dream car... a Ferrari 1995 348 Spyder, otherwise it's like driving a slot car with great power on tap and it's not even a turbo model...Richard from Los Angeles (SFV area)
I am curious as to what a 1982 Porsche 911 SC in great condition and almost 200,000 miles is worth? I am trying to buy one and want to get a good deal.
I have had 4 porsche 911s.
The first was a 74 911 coupe (in 74, there were only 2 brought to the states, base car, called 911, and next model up 911s...).
Then I had a 71 911t, had 75k original, then I bought a 74 Carrera...
Now I have a 79sc, 90k original miles... this 79 sc has all history and service work documentation back to delivery date... first owner was a cardiologist, he sold it to his dentist friend, so proper maintenance was always done properly as both were fastidious and took fanatical care; oil/filter changed every 3-4k, valves adjusted as necessary etc...
I drove the car up the coast from Monterey to Seattle in 07 Jan. Unfortunately, I encountered a lot of snow and sleet along the 1087 mile epic wintry slog... the car performed flawlessly including heater/defroster and provided great entertainment, even in 6-8 inches of snow... this is the best 911 I have owned thus far...
I just purchased a 1983 SC 2 days ago. I grew up driving my dad's Porsche's and always dreamed of having my own. After selling my 1967 GTO a few years ago I was kind of lost without a classic to drool over so I had to drool over everyone elses.
I found the SC with just 76,000 original miles, 2 previous owners and it is in museum quality condition with all service records. (Even has the original air compressor in the box and the complete tool kit) I'm in heaven!!

I have a 1983 911SC and have owned the car since 1994. It is in absolutely perfect condition. It had 117,000 miles on it when I bought it and now has 141,000. I have babied this car for last 17 years. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this car. But, after 10 years of it sitting in the garage and my wife's constant nagging me to sell it since I don't ever drive it, I am ready to sell it.
My question to all of you is how much should I ask for when I put it up for sale? When I say the car is in perfect condition that doesn't even begin to describe how nice the car is. It is black with black leather interior. Not a scratch or dent. Chrome 7 & 8 Fuchs. Is $20,000 too much to ask? Even at this price, whoever buys it will be getting an unbelievable car worth way more than $20,000. Help. What should I do?
I just purchased a 1983 911 SC in October from the second owner in R.I. With only 36000 miles on the clock and good solid engine and body, I wheeled this car 3000 miles to get home averaging 25 mpg (US) and used only 1 quart of oil.
What an amazing car, I think I am having an affair without ever cheating on the woman I am about to marry.

I just bought a 1983 911SC Cabriolet from its second female owner (rare car - they only made about 1500 before the Carrera came on line). I will be the first male owner!
It has just turned 167,000km and is in excellent, very original condition. When I say original I mean original - even has the original roof (showing a little wear, but still serviceable) and seats (leather looking a little tired, but coming back with some TLC). The original stereo is in the car as well although it is past its prime and will be replaced with a nice Becker one fairly soon. Has some great orignal colour coded cookie cutters as well which really complete the whole period look of the car.
The car did only 300km in the past year with its previous owner and I have done 1,000km in it since I bought it last month - I think the car is enjoying the difference in ownership - lots of weekend country use and lots of pampering during the week.
No problems (touch wood) as yet, although all pads were replaced, as well as the front rotors and the front wheel bearings were repacked immediately upon taking delivery. One of the pads was almost to the backing plate (!) and the front rotors were getting a little thin. I have also replaced the worn and faded hood badge, and all of the gas struts for the hood and engine cover (which wouldn't do their job anymore) as well as some small plastic trim over the seat belt fixing points which were broken and missing tonneau cover studs.
Projects - the steering wheel has a couple of broken welds and will be replaced with a period Momo Prototipo, the headlight bulbs will be replaced with some modern Hella halogen units, new Becker stereo with modern German speakers in the stock grilles, repair the non-functioning blower motor and air conditioning and ultimately replace the tyres with some new ones (the current ones are showing their age even though they have plenty of tread and would be lethal in the wet) - might even put some nice Fuchs wheels on it - but keep the originals of course!

I just ran into this website and enjoyed all the comments. I have a platinum with burgundy int 1983 SC cab. I've had it 3 years and love it. I get all the reg maint done and have replaced shocks, injectors and all the small stuff. I agree w/the comments about reg driving and reg maint. I paid $15K for mine and although it has an imperfect repaint, I am okay using it regularly and don't mind if it gets chipped occasionally. You pay for show room quality with a knot in your stomach. I had the popping occasionally and solved it by driving it and replacing the injectors. My distributor (bearings) just went out at 165K miles and I had to fork out $500 for a rebuilt one. But the car is the most fun one I've owned. ('55 Chevy, 77 Camaro, 74 454 vette, 27T ratrod,65 Olds 442,80 Spitfire) Porsches are definitely a different league and I consider mine a thoroughbred street machine and will take on a 5.0 Mustang anyday of the week. CARZ RULE.
Re "Oily smell" in the car from May 2007. I have an 82 Targa that exhibited that exhibited the same problem; after warm up, the car would suddenly smell very oily. Turned out to be a leaking high pressure oil hose that dripped oil on the muffler. Once the car was hot, the oil burned off resulting in the smell. Not an uncommon problem according to my repair guy. Hope this helps.
