Hey, I do Not have a 106 or want 1, I have a ford fiesta Zetec-s 1.6l 16valve mk5 (110BHP standard) it is very stylish, incredibly easy to mod (easier that pugs) I mean for instance, independent rear suspension so you can lower it as you please with minimum cost, so the handling is even better than a '106' the engine is capable of pumping out 200BHP if tuned properly, few tweaks and it looks the BOMB.
FORD is a lot cheaper/easier to fix than a peugeot.
My site is www.freewebs.com/how2doit if you would like to see my zetec-s.
Ha ha, so many unsubstantiated claims. I'll fill in the blanks.
106 / Saxo has torsion bar suspension, this can be lowered by rotating the bars in the beam. Cheap than buying new springs for your Ford. Check EVO mag, the 106 Gti is still one of their favourite hot hatches. No mention of the dull low revving Zetec S.
Peugeot tested their car with 2 people and a tank full of fuel to obtain their figures. Citroen didn't; if you check any Citroen Saxo brochure you will see the figures are quoted at 7.6 0 - 60.
People on here are also missing the big factor of weight. The Saxo VTS weighs 935kgs, the Clio weighs (according to brochure) 1090kgs. So power to weights are much closer. 130bhp per ton and 150bhp p/t. I own both cars, and its commonly known that the VTS/Gti makes 130bhp out the box. In fact I've been to several rolling road days and I have never seen one make less. The opposite has to be said about the Clio. Visit Cliosport. net and they will openly admit the 172 and 182 rarely make the manufacturers stated power figures.
0-60 these cars are very close. However, once the 2.0l stretches its legs at the bigger speeds it should have the advantage. The Saxo/106 gearing is also an advantage for acceleration.
Using a Vbox timing instrument for a magazine buying guide, I recorded 0-60 7 seconds, 0-100 20.2 sec, 15.5 1/4 and 129mph. As you can see the 0 - 60 times are similar, the 0-100 times show the Clio to be around 2 seconds quicker.
Cheers.
As much as I dislike both cars for their awful build quality and general image, I think I need to defend the Clio 182/ the light-weight 172. It is leagues ahead of the 106, and when both are standard the clio not only reaches 60 at least a second quicker, but as the above reviewer said, is much faster top end.
The 106 does 0-60 in pretty much 8 seconds dead. The Clio in 7. The 106 is not that close to it even in a drag race to 60, a difference of 20 in power to weight ratio is quite a lot, and it shows. The 106 is more comparable to a Fiesta ST, whilst the Clio more to a Civic Type R.

I think you'll find mate the clio 172 weighs in at 1035kgs not 1090.
And another thing is the clio's not making exact manufacturer power output, is only by a few bhp at the most.
Assuming the clio has 172bhp and weighs the above that makes it 167bhp per tonne, so even if it's below the above power figure it still makes more than 160 bhp per tonne.
That's at least 30bhp up on the gti/vts. so midrange and top end your scuppered mate, however I have raced a vts and they are quick upto 60, but still behind the sport clio's b at least half a second or more. These were raced back to back by both drivers with the same results. both standard.
I can't deny that the gti/vts are very quick little cars but there not as fast as the sport clio's, almost similar to 60 but that's it on a rolling start the clio would be quicker.
Yeah, the 106/VTS are old school compared to the clio, hot hatches have move on quite a bit since the days of the 106.
Hi, heres my opinion. Clio 172 owners need to pit their car against a more appropriate contender, i.e. a 306 GTi-6 or similar. The fact is the Clio was derived around a period when the 106 had been ultimately in production for a few years, thus giving Renault a better standing over Peugeot in terms of design and development.
The other piece of factual evidence you might need to consider also is the fact that the 106 GTi isn't seen as direct competition for the 172, nor was it designated to be seen that way. Its competitors: Corsa Gsi, Zetec S, Saxo VTS, Corsa Sport, (all 1.6s) and the like were in my opinion left in the shade by it. The fact that a decent and slightly modified 106 GTi can keep pace with a 172 marks the 106 as a significant hot hatch development that can show up more expensive / newer machinery. A 106 GTi in standard guise would probably not beat a 172, and even in a somewhat modified state that would be a hard task. However in the hands of a competent diver it should be able to show up a 172 driver or 2, and being a 1.6 pitted against a 2.0, makes this little car an object that should be commended. Thanks.
