I'm 16 and just bought an 82 j10 with the 258 I have only put 100 miles on it since I got plus some towing around the yard shes not fast, but she'll take a house off the foundation I'm planing on starting full restoration as soon as I can find a replacement fuel tank I love this truck I don't want what everyone else has and none of my Chevy or ford friends get the jeep thing, but they'll find out when my kids are driving it... right. There tanks and run for ever get one while you can p.s.I'm looking for another one for my mom.
Just bought my first J10, 1980 from a buddy for $200 bucks. He needed the money. I sold a 1974 Ford F100 Ranger for $400.00 and got this little 4 wheel drive gem. The lifters on it are worn and it doesn't have diddly for power right now because of that, but I took my 10 yr old and 3 yr old out for a ride through the timber with it the day I got it, we went over a few trees and bounced around like crazy, but we couldn't get it stuck... I love this truck. Just found one on EBAY for $2K and put my bid in as soon as I saw it, I think I will just keep getting them, Would like the boys to each have one when they grow up.
These trucks just rock! I currently have a '75 J10 and a '64 J-200. Owned them both since 1998. In that time, I've rebuilt a leaky clutch cylinder and replaced 2 wheel cylinders on the '64 and have had to replace the starter once and overhaul the carburetor and distributor on the '75. I don't consider those major wallet-busters. These 2 trucks have never let me down, even on long trips. The '64 is low-geared in the rear so it tops out at 52 mph with the original 6 cyl, but it sure can pull stumps.
I own a '79 J10 with the 360 and Quadratrac system and I also have become a fan of the design. What made the trucks so good at pulling/towing was the combination of good torque and that they sat a lot lower than the other trucks on the market like Dodge and Chevy. The lower stance kept the trailer from throwing the truck all over the road making a 1/2 ton Jeep pull like a 3/4 ton Chevy or Dodge. That is also what killed the design as it wasn't "sporty" enough for a market that wanted the higher stance. Well, that and the 11 mpg that they deliver.
I own a 79 J10, bought it new ($6995) and loved it. My husband called it Judy's Jeep. We lived in Oregon and it got plenty of off roading way back then... It's been sitting in the garage and now the driveway for awhile. My husband died a few years back and my son wanted to restore it. Has under 50k original miles, and really should be taken care of but know the kid can't, doesn't have the wherewithal. It is rusting... what to do? Advice please. Thanks, Judy.
