As a owner of a 2002 dodge intrepid with 2.7 engine we had a check engine light at 20 k miles, then a transmission problem at 48 k, extended warranty fixed, after transmission was fixed next day, engine starting knocking, guess what, oil sludge build up caused the engine failure they say, changed oil as per dodge recommends. was told by dealer who replaced engine that wrong oil was used, should have been 5w20 not 10w30,4 quart oil pan. adds to problem, called dodge direct, requested replacement costs, they denied it, filed complaint with office of consumer safety, called by ISG in texas, they were dodge company to replace engines, they paid 4900.00 to have engine replaced, these engins if you can find a good one will run over 3500.00 to get and another 1500.00 to install, this should be a recall and buy back. this engine is a nightmare for dodge who will not offer a recall on it at all. beware of 2.7 liter owner get ready to buy a exspensive replacement these engines have died at 30k miles. good luck folks.

I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid and it all of a sudden overheated one day. The the air con went out. I never had checked the radiator fluid. My oil light flickers then about two days later, the engine overheats. I have been recommended to have the thermostat housing replaced. What do you all think. I still owe $10.000 on it..

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid 2.7L that I purchased in 2004. A year into having the car my engine goes out due to oil leakage. By me having 4 more years into paying for the car I had to buy a re-manufactured engine ($3,052.00). The remanufactured engine was covered under a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty. A year after that the oil pan cracks and all the oil came out the engine. I replace that then the oil light flickers and the engine overheats. I get regularly scheduled oil changes and keep regular maintinance done on it as long as I can afford it. I replaced the thermostat, thermostat housing, and the connector, and it stills overheats. I'm running out of patience and money! So if anyone know anything about the class action suit please email me at keith23_99@yahoo.com.

I purchased a 2002 Intrepid SE last year and this car is a total piece of crap. I have had the transmission replaced already and now my oil light comes on after driving more than 15 miles straight. Something on top of the engine is now leaking (appears to be connected to the radiator, any help would be appreciated) and the car runs badly.

I am going to sell this thing and go Japanese, perhaps the Chrysler Corp needs to take some direction from Toyota and build a reliable car. Is it a surprise why American cars companies are failing? Please inform me of any kind of class action lawsuit. jeff_crosby2002@yahoo.com

Oh, yes, I have a 2002 dodge intrepid, and it has given me a lot of headaches. I have trouble with the coolant valve on top of the motor, leaking and busting. I have replaced this part 3 times in the last year and 1/2. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy this car. Yesterday, I was stranded because the coolant valve got so hot it blew the whole side off of the coolant valve (which by the way is just cheap black plastic).

Does anyone know if the manufactuer makes metal ones? Maybe that would be of help and keep it from happening. I hope to trade this piece of crap off. I have spent a lot of money on this car, on payments and repair and it doesn't have long till its payed off, but, what good is it, if it keeps me stranded??? I feel like I got really taken..

Please anyone, if you have the same problem, e-mail me at : xcusemegf@aol.com, I will chat about this subject. I am a pro.. believe me you!!!

I am the owner of a 2002 Intrepid ES and have experienced brake problems at different intervals.

Is there anyone else who encountered problems with brakes?

I am 1&1/2 year owner of the Dodge Intrepid SE. The check engine light has been on from the beginning. I purchased this vehicle used with 60k and now I am around up to 90K. I have been everywhere in this thing. I have had the transmission worked on and now ti acting back up. From read the past reviews I wish I would have researched more before I purchased the vehicle.

The reason I am writing is I am leaving for Florida and that is one long haul from where I live. I was wondering if anyone can for-see any problems that might occur with the vehicle on the trip?

Sell now or wait until I get to where I am going.

I love the way it rides, handles, and room is great especially being a big man.

I also own a 2002 dodge intrepid 2.7 and the water pump malfunctioned out of the blue I regulary changed the oil, air filter, had it tuned up, coolant flush, if you name it I did it and out of no where my "water pump" malfunctioned I was told it was some kind of flaw in all 2.7s' in which instead of it leaking externally it leaks internally in which it flooded my engine causing it to have to be replaced and if you don't know the cost of a new or re manufactured warranty is 3500+ so if there is a class action let me know.

Today I am going car shopping, as I brought my 2002 Intrepid in for a tune-up and my mechanic told me I should start shopping as it is a well known problem with the Intrepid that the coolant leaks into the oil pan?? And clogs up the engine or pump?

I have already replaced the transmission @ $1100. Plus a lot of misc things that amount to another $800 or so. Has anyone else heard of this problem?? I don't think my mechanic would say it if it wasn't true since he has nothing to gain.. any suggestion?

My advice to the November 4th poster: there's no sense in buying a new car if you don't yet have a problem. It's good that your mechanic pointed out the potential for a problem so that you can be aware of it. However, if you take good care of the car, don't abuse it, and are diligent about the maintenance, then you will likely head off any problem. Check your fluids: make sure the coolant level is where it should be, and check for the leaking water pump. People ruin their engines when coolant leaks into the oil pan after the head warps from the engine running too hot, precisely because they never bother to check their coolant level or get the water pump replaced when it needs it. When you check your oil every month (as you should), note if you see little green drops of anti-freeze on the dip stick. Change your oil every 3,000 miles. Do all those things, and you will minimize the chances of having problems, and not have to trade off a relatively new car like a 2002. If you're not good at doing maintenance or don't think you will be diligent about it, then you may well have bad luck--with any car.

In response to everyone and the concern of this car being a "lemon" I have a few comments. We have owned the 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7 since late 2003 when we purchased it used from a family friend, who also happens to be our mechanic. When purchased it had 14k miles and today it just went over 75k. We have had the oil changed every 3k miles since we purchased it and have had no major issues until yesterday when my wife was coming home from work and she called me saying smoke was coming out of the hood. I thought to myself that it was steam and not smoke so I asked her to check the gages which were all in the norm. Being only 2 blocks from the house when this happened I told her to turn the heater on and just drive carefully here. When she arrived I popped the hood and saw the thermostat housing laying on top of the intake system. I tried to find what secured this part in place, but it appears to be made of plastic and glued? together. I called our friend the mechanic today about it and his response was almost comical, he says wow that is really funny yours will be the 5th one of those I have seen since Monday. I guess plastic was not meant to last more than 4 years, and Dodge should have recalled this part knowingly. On the fortunate side the part is readily available almost everywhere and the cost is under $100. I think this car will easily make it over the 100k mark if we keep our maintenance records up to date.

Tom in Florida.

I read most of these comments, and wish I was one of the lucky people without problems. I have an 2002 Intrepid SE, with 80,000 miles on it. Since I purchased this vehicle, the check engine light has been on regularly. I have replaced three oxygen sensors, oil sending unit, camshaft position sensor, and now I am getting a P0108 code for my MAP sensor. If I get rid of this car now, I will take a big loss, but I am considering it anyway. I recently had to replace the front brakes, and the caliper pins were all stripped out. I had to drill out the holes, tap new threads, and install heli-coils just to get the bolts to tighten. I work at parts store part time, and have come across many people like myself. How do I get more information on the class action suit?

My husband and I purchased a 2002 Dodge Intrepid in June 2006. We hadn't even made the first payment on the thing and it blew steam everywhere and the part (gotta love that plastic engine, huh?) to fix it (OF COURSE DEALER PART ONLY) cost over $100.00. THEN, the driver side power window started jumping the track and it took 3 complete overhauls on the whole door panel and control switches to get the sucker back on track. Hint: don't risk shutting the driver door with the window down AT ALL I don't care how gently you shut it! Now the passenger back window motor is dragging and completely bogs down and stops working half the time so we try to avoid rolling it down at all.

The inner tie rod on the drivers' side was actually SHOT when we purchased the car - at 65,000 miles. The brakes are metal to metal and it sits with 69,000 miles on it today (end of Nov.). Acceleration hesitation, headlamps flicker - even with all accessories turned off - they dim and brighten back and forth in a regular pattern whether at idle or driving. Actually the whole car feels like it's almost shorting out at times. The whole car never really felt 'right' from the beginning.

Last week my husband and I kept blaming each other for not putting the car into PARK after driving it. Well, two days ago I get a call from my poor hubby, stranded, because the sucker won't shift at all. Shifter completely jammed up. So, now, we sit with our car in the driveway STUCK in Low and the E-Brake set. I simply refuse to pay another red cent for a shifter cable (yep, factory part only) or anything else for that piece of ______.

Yes, it (usually)handles awesome. Yes, it's roomy and comfortable - even with our 4 children in it with us (loved the bench seat). Yes, it's a pretty car, but if it weren't for our beloved Chevy Suburban ~ I'd be postal at this point in time.

It irks me all the bull that comes from Chrysler/Dodge/whatever they want to call themselves! Damn con artists. They obviously KNEW there were MAJOR problems with the cars ~ Why else quit making it? JERKS.

Meanwhile, UP goes the for sale sign. I don't expect to get what I ideally 'should' from a vehicle with the same specs. Probably won't even get any calls. Hell, I may just let the sucker get repo'd just to get rid of the headache.

Thanks for your time and sorry MOST of us are all in the same boat, up the creek and no paddle.

My daddy raised a Chevy girl and I have always sworn I would never own a damn Dodge... I knew better. My bad.

i purchased a used (now known as "pre-owned") dodge intrepid with 79,000 miles on it in 2003. it now has 127,000 miles on it. my only problem has been the lights staying on due to some sort of short in the electrical system. I think it's from moisture accumulating in the doors. also, my check engine light comes on. it seems to be related to the fuel system. cheap gas or letting the tank get too low plus found out this happens if I don't turn the gas cap until I hear three clicks or neglect to close the cap tightly. sounds crazy, but seems to be true-three clicks seals the cap. I haven't had the problem since I started to follow that rule and it's been a year.
