Maybe those times where accurate when both vehicles were brand new, that shows exactly how imports last longer then american crap. My 89 still has great compression and runs like new on original motor, I bet the mustangs that I've raced have almost dead motors cause there garbage. Every mustang I have raced I have had no problems seeing them in my rear view and I'm bone stock except for air intake and exhaust. My best friend has a 93 gt cobra and we race a lot, but I'm still waiting for the day that his car passes mine, he keeps very close beside me, but cannot pass me. Anyways nuff said about american garbage, Honda's blow to, the only honda that I have raced that could stay pretty close was a gutted crx. I know my 240 is not the fastest bone stock car in the world, but I know it has a little more balls then people actually think. If you don't believe my mustang beating stories just bring your stang and come race me in Nanaimo B.C. I'll put your mouth to rest and your stang lol.
Comparing apples to oranges will never end in a concrete answer.
Mustangs can handle well and are used for road racing on a regular basis unless no one here has heard of a cobra R.
I used to be a Mustang owner, but currently own an LS1 TA and I can tell you right now no 240sx has ever accepted a race from me.
I like the cars and would like to build one, but for daily driving purposes the 240sx isn't what I would call the ideal car to have. When it comes to the street and who is smoking who, 90% of you 240sx guys smoking v6 Mustangs will keep doing so and only dream of what it's like to smack the heck out of a 500+rwhp 03 Cobra.
408 Iron Block LSX based motor with a procharger H/C = 757rwhp. The nice thing about this set up, I can drive it and its mild mannered. You can't even get the peak performance youd want out of a 240 on pump gas. Sure I wouldn't try to out handle one, but that's not what I built my car for, I can gaurentee a stock WS6 with Road race suspension from factory would smack the crap out of most 240s modded or otherwise.
There's always someone faster than you, remember that. Chicagoland 240 drivers if you want to race I'm all ears and not cheap.
I own a 90 240SX. SOHC 12Valve, 2.4L, 140HP 152TQ (Nissan rated at the end of the standard 5-speed transmission).
It used to be an automatic with 280k miles on it. I had no problem with the older carb'd 5.0s when all I did was have a gutted cat. The fuel injected ones were just barely faster.
I am now a long ways from where I was, sticking with the KA24E which was in the 89-90 240sx (as opposed to the KA24DE which is a twin cam 16v. 2.4L DOHC, 155hp-160tq offered from 91-94 in the S13 Chassis and 94-98 in the S14 Chassis) I now have intake, header, exhaust, ignition, emissions removal, a 5-speed and some minor weight reduction. I have no problem keeping with or beating a pre-05 GT mustang (hell I beat a terminator cobra, but I KNOW that was a bad driver, cobras are faster). I then added a 115-shot of nitrous and killed my friends C5 Vette by about half a car. Off spray I usually spin a fair amount into second gear and chirp 3rd on 235/45/17ZR Michelin Pilot Sport tires with brand new tread.
Well I had some problems, I was up to a 150 shot which was probably 360bhp on stock internals and an injector failed when I was going down the track. I blew a rod right out the side of the block (in non-detonation conditions its good to 900hp or so) but I managed to coast to a 13.4 @ 91mph = (.
The S13 is a quick car, it'll hand a Civic its ass most the time. Nissans aren't these zippy little things people think of them. I mean hell my brothers 350Z just annihilated a 07 General Lee R/T Charger last night, with just a jim wolfe cone filter added to it. 03 Nissan 3.5L V6 > 07 Chryslers HEMI 5.6L V8...Wow Wek-Sos.
I can't believe you are talking about a Ford Mustang... I mean come on it's a Ford... The only thing their good at making is truck that can pull 25000lbs. If your gonna compare yourself to a muscle car then do it with a Chevy!!!
I have a 91 240sx with a hks cold air intake, Greddy ful injectors, Greddy racing Cluth, Greddy tubro, and CHM bodykit. My 0-60 is 5.4 sec I beat mustangs all the time.
Also I'm getting new crank shafts and cams.
Can't you guys just get along. A car is just that, a car. Some are built for road racing, some are built with the drag racer in mind, and others are just to get you where you need to go. I love most all cars from most all manufacturers. They all have there purpose, and yes some are better than others. Better is a relative term however. Some have better performance, some are better drag racers, some are better road racers, some are more durable... I have owned both a 240sx and a 5.0 mustang. I liked both cars. My mustang is an 86 with an 87 front clip, tremec tko transmission, and a built 5.0. It runs mid 12's in the quarter and is a hell of a lot of fun to drive. My 240 was a 1990 with a KA motor. I had a Jim Wolfe cam, 60 trim t3/t4 hybrid turbo, 3 inch full exhaust, large front mount intercooler, and 50 shot of nitrous. My 240 also ran 12's in the quarter. It was also a hell of a lot of fun to drive. I don't see what the big deal is. The most important part is not what car you are driving, but how much fun you are having. The winner of the race is not who has the best elapsed time, it is the driver who is having the most fun!!! Peace to all. :)
First off cars come from the factory different; some faster, some slower.
Second saying that with the same amount of money, a certain car would be faster is just wrong, because a turbo set up for a 240 would cost a lot, when you could set up an old Volvo set up and just open the waste gate for under 500 dollars, if you have any basic understanding of a turbo.
Sorry guys, but both cars are being talked up way too much, and if you drag race, why are you running a stock car?
And to the guy that said street racing kills people; I'm a lot more worried about the idiot next to me on the cell phone that hasn't noticed the stop sign in front of him, than the two guys racing especially, if it is a stock 240 and a Mustang that are lucky to even get to the speed limit in 15 seconds.
Alright... I'm currently building a 240sx project car. the stock KA24de was blown.. so its gone.. along with the auto tranny. I'm going to be putting an a (make sure to read this carefully) CHEVY SMALL BLOCK.. why? cost mainly. and the lsx series of engines in great for this car. the 240 handles well in stock form. the Ls1 engine with t-56 tranny will accually end up a little LIGHTER than the stock KA24 (e or de). now I'm going to be using an older iron block carb'd motor. but that's mostly because it's a high HP motor to begin with (327 quadrajet from a late 60's early 70's vette about 275hp 300ft/lbs stock)
Now its going to add some weight (which I will compensate for with removal of A/C... relocation of battery (to trunk). use of after market suspenion (full coilover 12k spring rate up front to handle that weight.) along with many many more things.
Basically the 240sx is indeed a TRACK car (mainly). it could be drag raced if you put enough money in it. a Mustang or F-body (camaro, TA, firebird). is a drag car (mainly). both can be made into either track or drag cars for the right amount of money or time..
I chose the 240 for a few reasons.
1. I wanted something a little different (mustangs and F-bodies are common around me)
2. it was light weight with an Independant rear axle set up.
3. aftermarket support is HUGE.
4. I did NOT chose the 240 for its engine. I chose it for the engine swap possibilites (RB20, rb25, rb26, sr20, ca18, 2jz, or even a v8.)
5. also.. I liked the styling of the 240.
In the end.. it's a matter of what you like. I have a friend with a late 90's cobra.. that has some upgrades.. and it is very fast.. and a nice car. handling does leave a little to be expected.. but no he will not be doing 35 on the curves.. trust me.. with some aftermarket suspension components.. it can handle. on the other hand I have a friend with an sr20det swapped 240. its got a whole host of upgrades.. suspension and engine wise. it's a quick car.. definetly handles better than the cobra.. but is not as fast in a straight line.
This is insane, stop trying to compare a Mustang of any size, to a 240 of any year. You wanna go fast, DO IT. Really though stop saying you can do it better in this car. You want to go fast around a corner, get the lighter of the two (the 240). You wanna go fast in a straight line, get the heavier and larger engine of the two (stang)
But stop doing this "I smoke_____ all day long in my ______"
No one cares, it's about what YOU want, not what a message board has to say.
I agree with most of the people on here. Stop with the Fords; I can say from experience they suck. I've owned a 71 Ford LTD Convertible; it was powerful but died.
A 68 Ford Falcon; not too powerful with its straight six, but still a very nice old car but it died as well.
A 82? Ford E150 van 5.0L 4 barrel carb. and dual straight pipes was on its last leg when I traded it in for a 92 Mercury Cougar. First to go was the rear differential, then the A/C, then the digital dash, then the windows stopped rolling down and it was an oven in the Florida heat.
After that was an 89 Ford Crown Vic Ltd; it's had some starting problems. I'd reset the fuel pump and it would start, but one day without warning it stalled, and now no matter what I replace, it won't get spark.
So I saved some cash and went and bought an 89 240sx. It runs great, but the take off is a little slow and it doesn't like to shift right away going into 2nd gear. My guess is the previous owner was trying to race and drift in it. But with todays gas prices, it's worth fixing this car and having a car that will last me for quite a while.
And I know it's a fast car; after I hit 2nd gear I can fly down the road.
Mustangs? hmm.
If the mustang ha 250hp and the 240 has 250hp.. OF COURSE the 240 will SMOKE it in drag/track handling/etc.
If they both have 500hp the 240 will takeover once again.
Its lighter/more aerodynamic and has better weight distribution than the mustang.
Mustangs are fun cars to build though, and are faster than a lot of cars out today, but the 240sx is a lighter car.
Just like if you had 300HP in your civic and 300HP in your 240... unfortunetaly the civic would smoke it.
