I have had the same problem with my 1995 jmc jimmy and I replaced the egr valve. the mechanic at my local delership ran a diagnostic on the check engine light and said that this was the problem. After I replaced it, the check engine light went off and the truck ran fine until about three weeks later and it started running the same without the light on and this time there appears to be a fuel leak somewhere under the plenum. The smell of raw fuel is very strong and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what the next step could be in fixing this problem because the parts are so expensive, I cannot afford to go through the whole trial and error experience. It is just too expensive. Please e-mail me with any ideas at sandbunkerblues@yahoo.com Thnx. for the support.
I have a 1997 blazer 4d 4x4 it had 92,000 miles on it and it started stalling at lights or turning corners and one time turned off for a second at about 60 on the highway, so I gave it a tune up, new plugs (needed them), new wires, new dist. cap, new rotor, changed (myself) trans fluid and filter, fuel filter, flushed the radiator, all a real pain to do. I thought that would take care of the stalling... nope it didn't. all doing this because I was going to take it on a 3,200 mile trip to the Colorado mountains from south texas and wanted to make it there and back. I was getting upset, I did everything and couldnt figure why it was stalling still after 500 dollars in parts for tune-up. So I tried this and it worked DO THIS AND IT WILL SAVE YOU $$$$ Don't TAKE IT TO THE DEALER! 1st disconnect the battery completely leave off for about a half hour, then with the battery STILL disconnected remove and CLEAN the fuses in the fuse box by the driver side door, what I mean by cleaning the fuses is take out each one and with some wd-40 on a rag, clean the metal part of the fuse then reinserting it. 2nd, under the hood carefully disconnect one by one and clean all of the electrical connections, computer, air intake, etc. also the sensor on the harmonic balancer under the engine, after this is completed reconnect battery start engine and let idle for about 10 minutes for the computer to reset all the functions. I did this and WOW it worked, I went to colorado and had absolutely no problems at all, I even averaged 22 MPG! Never stalled again and actually ran better than it has ever. I figure some electrical connection was loose or dirty. Try this and let me know if this has worked for you, It did for me! I figure I saved at least 1500 bucks doing all this myself. I suggest you do too, this way if you break something youll know what it is and fix it instead of a "mechanic" covering it up... Save yourself money and at the same time get to know your truck its worth it! Rick.
My 94 Chevy Blazer had a fuel smell. I removed the upper intake plenum and found a puddle of gas. It has the CPI system which is unserviceable so I replaced it. Problem solved. Bad part of the deal was the part cost $300.

My Blazer has 85,000 miles and I have had the EGR replaced 3 times, it just gave out again on my way home from work :- (. Those of you who have less than 75,000 miles on the odometer might me happy to know that Chevy has extended the warranty on the EGR. If it goes out before 75,000 miles it will cost you nothing to repair it. If you have had the EGR valve replaced by a non dealer garage then Chevy will reimburse the repairs up to a point. Call your local Chevy dealer for details. I'm keeping my Blazer, I have the software and cables needed to "talk" to the engine computer and should be able to take care my own repairs. Good luck with yours.

My wife’s 1994 Blazer is on the second EGR Valve, I have been servicing the new valve regularly I have inserted a home made fine mesh screen between the gasket and the valve to catch carbon and it seems to have helped quite a bit. Yes Chevy seems to have messed up on this one…

Jacob Reiger; I have a 1995 Chevy S10 series 4.3 vortex blazer. You name a problem and it has had it. (and I mean EVERYTHING) It is a gorgeous vehicle and when it runs, it runs great. The only problem is that it doesn't run properly very often. In regards to the ERG valve problem that so many people are having, it may not actually be the ERG valve. In fact, it may be a leak or a small crack, that is not noticeable, in the air intake hose. This will cause very poor idling (fluctuations in idling) and stalling. The oil coolant hoses are very poorly made and both of mine blew while on the highway. I was fortunate that I did not blow my motor. I replaced the front oil coolant line by myself and it cost me $75.00 (canadian) for the part and it was very easy to do. (20 minutes tops). The book time for the automotive shops for this problem is 3 hours (garbage). For other problems like fuel pump, ball joints, seals, alternator, catalytic convertor... are all common problems with every vehicle. To save yourselves a lot of money getting your blazer fixed in a shop, buy a manual (which has detailed instructions on repair) and do the work yourself, because the work for these problems is actually not that hard to do. I love my blazer and even though I have considered trading it off numerous times, I have always reconsidered and kept it. It's my vehicle and I love it.
Hi All!! for everyone here posting about the EGR... it is the fuel pressure regulator, which is known by chevrolet. The only way is to replace the complete injection unit) (300.00) dealer!!! I have one, a 93 in the shop now for it, the regulator is part of the main injection system, and cannot be replaced separately. the diaphram cracks,,, I have replaced the throttle position sensor, had fuel line kits, and everything else until I found this out. I have also found a site www.lindentech, com, that makes a reg for 90.00, but requires slight machining of the existing reg to fit, but from what I understand... it works...CHECK THE REGULATOR!! for additional info..dbrising@dtccom.net.
Own a 1995 S-10 Blazer 2-door. EGR replaced, Catalytic replaced, ABS replaced, Fuel pump replaced, Battery replaced when fried for no reason. Just last week for no reason oil line from block to cooler burst... Engine is locked!!! 110k miles... been a Wonderful, reliable vehicle till now.
There was a post here regarding a bad wire to the EGR valve keeping it open. What wire? My girlfriend has a 1994 S10 Blazer and it keeps acting up. I clean the EGR valve every other week, and it seems to keep things at bay, but would love a permanent solution.
Thanks.
My 95 Blazer Vortec 4.3 has 130,000 miles on it, and I have NEVER had any sort of problem, except for a starter that I replaced myself. I love my truck!!
I too have had the EGR valve problem along with the gas smell. Took it to the dealer and here's what they said. My gas smell was due to a leaky fuel injector. They replaced the injectors and the smell is now gone (second set of injectors for this car @ 120k). By the way I've always used premium gas. The poor idle was caused by carbon build up in the EGR valve. This has been occurring every two weeks for about sixth months. They clean it, it gets dirty. They said they were pulling big chunks of carbon out of the valve. I asked "where is the carbon coming from?" "Design flaw in the S10" they told me. They said they had to open up the upper and clean out all the deposits. Total $750. Ran two days and the problem came back. They removed another big chunk and said if it comes back again they'll have to clean the lower (another $700). I had the chance to trade it in sixth months ago, now I'm kicking myself. I'm afraid to drive the car for fear the light will come on again. I ask if I could clean the valve my self, but they said it was too complicated. Thanks for the guy that told us where it is. Could you post a diagram?

I have a 94 GMC Jimmy. It has 186,000 miles on it. Now, it will not start. I put a new fuel filter, rotor, and distributor cap. I pressed the fuel rail relief valve and fuel shot out of it (after the new fuel filter was installed). When you turn the ignition, it acts like it wants to run, but does not. It can hear a backfire inside the intake manifold. I wonder if the time chain had jumped a tooth or two or could it be that the fuel pump is not putting out the fuel pressure needed to run. It is a 3.7 Vortex V-6 engine. While waiting for an answer or ideas, I will begin surgery to look at the condition of the timing chain and sprockets.
We have a 95 Chevy Blazer. For about 6 months it has been stalling unexpectedly, twice while going 60 mph. Also, my commute for work is 45 minutes... every day for the last month or so, when I get home, it will not start again for an hour or two. I have read all the posts on the EGR valve, is this my problem?
I own a 1994 S-10 Blazer with a 4.3 Liter Vortec as well. The problem with the vortec not starting is usually related to low fuel pressure when trying to start the motor. The fuel injector system (CPI) is very touchy with this. You must have at least 58 psi of fuel pressure to make the engine start properly. Lower pressure results in fuel being dripped in goofy patterns into the intake manifold. The fuel must be properly atomized to fire correctly at startup. Many people make the mistake of looking at the ignition electrics first, when this is not usually the problem. Check fuel pressure and I would guess it's below 58 psi at startup. Rough idle has been linked to the poor EGR design, but the fuel pressure regulator on the CPI module fails and floods fuel into the intake area. This also results in poor operation. I went to www.lindertech.com, and bought their aftermarket regulator and replaced it myself. It requires some mechanical ability, and the dealer doesn't want you buy one. They prefer to sell you a new CPI module for $500. This site http://www.mwfi.com/gasoline_engines.htm offers a new CPI injector for about $270 dollars. I hope the info helps someone out.
I bought a 1997 Blazer 6 months ago with 58,000 miles. I have replaced the ignition switch. A cool 250.00 worth. 2 Months later the vehicle stalls, under any normal conditions. For no reason. The dash lights go out. Overhead lights go out. The thing will not start. Symptoms are like someone pulled the plug to the battery and everything goes dead. Does anyone have the same problem? I need help. mwillis@greenhills.net.
