I have bought a Optra LT (5door) in Dubai/UAE (elsewhere known as Optra5). I drove it only 18000 Km in one year and one day the car broke down while starting the engine! (while still under the 3 year warranty contract)
It took one month of investigation and repairing by the local GM service center, ending up with complete engine re-assembling! (I mean it, as they have changed the water pump, Cylinder head & full set of 4 Pistons & Rings, 4 valves, plus Timing Belt and the time belt tightening wheel). I wrote a complain letter against the company, they explained that this was all because of a known problem in designing the water pump.
In reply to my follow ups, after 1.5 months, they offered me three choices; 1) One year extension of engine warranty. 2) Replacement of the whole engine with a brand new engine. 3) Trading in the car with any other model (buying price – 20% + 10% as trade assistance) without bothering about their fault. But they are not accepting to buy back the car and give me the cash. I am still struggling to get my rights.
Please note that this car is actually a Daewoo and has just received a few touches of design in some non-mechanical items such as exteriors and dashboard, before being introduced as a Chevrolet.
We have bought a Daewoo at the price of a Chevi!
Hello there... I have just test drove an optra 1.6 as well as the 1.8. Found the car to be a more of a cruising car than a race car. Maybe cause of the current local car that I am driving at the moment. Still considering the 1.6 compared to the 1.8 to buy or not to buy... pls advise.
I love our Chev Optra. 2005 LS model hatchback (I believe its 2.0L in Canada). I agree the mileage seems a little lacking, but I just finished driving a super efficient sub-compact so I'm a bit biased. The manual transmission Optra handles nice and tight unlike some of the sloppier domestic cars I've driven.
The only problem we've had with our car is a faulty dome light assembly that caused damage to the battery. The first time this happened we didn't own the car and GM replaced the battery only. This is the second time permanent battery damage has been done and this time they are replacing the light switch assembly and the battery. The dealership claims it's a known issue, but if that's the case I don't know why it wasn't replaced initially.
End story it's an annoyance, but I love the way the car handles.
I received my Optra 1.6A on last month (Feb 07) and I had traveled about 3500 km. So far no any major problem and I am very satisfied with it's handling even though 1.6A is without TCS.
In term of fuel consumption (FC), It about RM0.175/km during tire pressure at 34 psi.(mix area)
Only 1 minor problem is wind sound can be heard when driving at speed 130 km/h.
Is there any other owner facing the same problem? What is the solution?
Still wondering why 1st service at 10K km not 1K km? Is there any explanations?
Hi Chevy Optra owners, I've got a Optra 1600 in the Philippines.
Fuel consumption is about 18 l/100 km or about 1 liter/5km.
Chevrolet ph advised me... check battery, radiator, lights... I tried to explain that my fuel consumption problem can only be solved by checking the injection and or tuning, but maybe they don't understand English!! Anyone with fuel problems got a solution?? Thanks!!
I brought Optra2004 car, so for I driven 45kms, but now I m facing problem in car, whenever I switch on car, the rpm meter comes to zero and car shutdowns, if I keep my leg on accelarator car works, but the moment I leave my leg from accelarator, then again car switch off... I will appreciate if find any solution to it.
I am going to buy optra 1.6..
Pls advice me.
I have owned an Optra for a couple years now. It has been a very good car other than the back brake calipers. For the second time now, my calipers have seized destroying the pads and rotor.
Please do not buy this car. It constantly jerks when driving and I consider it to be a hazzard. I have had to replace 10 tires since I purchased this inferior quality vehicle. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!
Hey there,
I've a Chevrolet optra 1.8, 2003 model. the oxygen sensor and the Crank position sensor have to be replaced. the cost is too high in india. does anybody know of online suppliers of these parts?
00:46 Your idle speed may be adjusted to low and the engine isn't idling fast enough to maintain itself until you touch the throttle. The linkage to the throttle should have something that you can adjust until it can hold itself at idle.
Please ensure that your crank position sensor cable is not touching the engine case. it will burn thru your cable and give you all sort of problem.
The optra is a good car if properly maintain and service. Other make and model face problem too if not take care properly.
I bought an Optra 1.6A last May'07 (Malaysia). After 7 weeks, the whole card vibrate when the engine start up and can't power up though pressing the oil paddle. When arrived at the service center, there was smoke came out from the engine compartment. The service personnel not sure what's caused the problem and when they jigged up, they had found that the dust cover at the bottom melted due to heat from the exhaust and the problem can't even checked from the computer system. After near to an hour checking they finally suspect the ignition coil had burnt which caused only 3 valves working instead of 4. But.. how true still a doubt until the spare part arrive and fixed. It was 4 days and yet not confirm when can the coil arrive from the HQ in Malaysia as well.. doubt on the service the local service center can provide.. for a so call "minor" problem.. (that's what the service personnel informed), foreseen takes 1 week to repair.
The original tires that came on the new OPT RA I purchased in 2005 were worn out at 40,000 kilometres or 25,000 miles... not good at all I thought!
Bought the Optra Estate 1.6 in November 2005.
Now, after 65,000 kms, I must say it is a reliable car. Nothing has gone wrong. Only replaced the original tires and battery after 55,000 kms. Fuel consumption is acceptable with about 13 km/l in mixed conditions (upcountry). In pure city driving (Bangkok, so mainly standing still) it's about 9 km/l, which is comparable with other similar sized cars.
There was a little bit of oil leaking from the valve cover, which was fixed for free (warranty). Not serious though.
