Where can I start with my 02 eclipse gt. First, the day after I bought the car the engine started smoking. The dealer told me that it was natural for the engine to smoke to burn off paint applied on the engine. Next the sunroof goes out within a month. of the purchase so the dealer was willing to replace that. After that I go to get the first oil change on the vehicle and I am told that the gear oil pan is leaking and it is found that I had a defective seal. Then came the bigest problem at about 17k miles my transmission goes out and Mitsubishi refused to pay for it under warranty because I had the general service done at a midas instead of their shops. I ended paying for 4000 dollars worth of damage for a car that wasn't even a year old. Let me add that this wasn't my 1st or even my 2nd Mitsubishi, but my 3rd with 2 3000gts before this and never did I have the problems I have now. Leads me to believe that Mitsubishi just doesn't build them like they use to.

I bought a 2003 Eclipse GT last year and have had no problems with it, up until now. I was accelerating hard to get onto the freeway in 2nd gear, and when the engine hit 5,000 RPM, I heard what sounded like a loud rubbing noise. There was also vibration coming through the floorboards when this happened. So, I tried something out, I put in third and the same thing happened at 5,000 RPM, I haven't a clue as to what happened, but I will be calling the dealership to schedule an appointment for them to check it out, I am hoping that it is covered under warranty, either way, I will send another comment here with the details of what happens.

I bought my '98 GSX new, and have done lots of modifications to it (400 HP), it's great fun blowing the doors of most V-8's! Have it apart right now installing a new custom interior. I have had NO problems. A friend's son was so taken by it, he bought a '99 GSX. He has had no problems except a bent wheel, so I gave him one of mine when I bought 18inch OZ wheels. We like this car!

Lol, well you either didn't know how to drive or maybe it was a bad car, it happens no company is perfect. Its still better then americain cars and mitsubishi knows what there doing. I used to have an eclipse never had a problem so don't say they suck.

I bought a 2001 Eclipse GT back in November of 2003. It was used so I was buying someone else's problems. I did get it from a dealer though. They sold it to me with the remainder of the 60,000 mile warranty. I bought it with 54,000 at the time. Now here's what happened...

Two days after purchase the front calipers were flopping around. Whoever worked on it before I bought it didn't tighten the bolts. Dealer said it was my problem because they had no bolts. I bought them at a Ford dealer for $6.00.

My wheels are also bent up. Two flat tires in the last 3 weeks. Mitsubishi says not their problem.

Now my pressure plate and throw out bearing (clutch) is gone. I had a garage tech check it out. Turns out that the factory clutch is not able to handle the factory torque rating. He then told me it looks like it's been gone for awhile...but, you can't always tell how long wear has been there.

The Eclipse's are great cars when they run right. I have every option on mine and besides the problems... I love my car. I will keep it until it goes no more. Unless someone wants to make me an offer? I'm just playing. Not selling.

I'm about to purchase a 2000 Eclipse GT. I have been reading the comments and some sound down right harsh. Should I reconsider this purchase? The car is mint and has only 31,000 miles on it. I did take it for a test drive and it seemed like a sound car. The only thing I noticed wrong with it the shift knob was loose.

The shift knob is loose?

It's a lemon, stay away!

Seriously, do you really think someone who has not even seen or driven the car is going to be able to tell you whether you should buy it or not? Trust your own instincts/judgement when deciding!

I have recently decided to buy a 2000 or above Eclipse GT. I greatly appreciate this forum and the feedback that has been posted. It has been a great help to me. My question is does it matter if I buy the car with an automatic or 5 speed transmission?

No, it doesn't really matter.

Unless you don't know how to drive a manual transmission car.

Then it does.

Hello Everybody, I am planning to buy a 98 eclipse RS with 83000 miles on it..the car runs fine... the only problems I felt were that the brakes when pressed made sound and there was some other sound coming from the trunk... the reviews on the site have scared me to death... should I buy this car... is that only the GSX's...and GT's have problems and not the RS's...please help...

I would steer clear of the rs eclipse. It has a 2.0 liter engine made by Chrysler that is notorious for head gaskets leaking oil, and poor engine electronics. Putting that engine in the eclipse was the worst thing Mitsubishi ever did.

I just recently bought a 1997 eclipse gs 5 speed manual with a little more than 97,000 miles on it. I love driving the car, but I do have some problems with it since I bought it (from a dealership)

In the time I have had it, I have personally replaced a few parts and fixed a few problems in the car, nothing major, but I was wondering if it is just from over use or shoddy parts I have so far replaced the PCV valve and hoses, valve cover gaskets (including the 4 spark plug gaskets), fixed the passenger seat (it would not slide back and forth when purchased)

I bought the car with a check engine light and the dealership told me I had a leaky evaporator (never told me which evaporator and I need to replace the A/C evaporator, even though I never use my A/C, and another evaporator, I forget where it is in the engine though), anyway, I took it to a mechanic and had a diagnostic check done and I pulled a code (i believe) PO442, which has to do with the evap system, so I figure to replace the hoses and if that does not work the charcoal canister and gas cap.

Unfortunately when I bought the car I signed an as-is statement (even though I did not find out about all of the problems except the a/c evaporator), it alarms me that the dealership did not see these problems, but they are nothing major like replacing a clutch or needing to tear the engine apart for a head gasket or something like that.

Also, I was looking in my fuse box, and I seem to be missing a few fuses, I saw that I am currently running without an ABS fuse, is that safe and can I pick one up at a local auto-parts store,

On a side note, I am finding it hard to remove my wheels to replace them (if I had a flat), one of the little plastic covers came out and I went to take the wheel off to replace it and I couldn't remove it.

Any help appreciated thank you.

Well in 1997 I do not believe that ABS was used so don't worry about it. As for buying a vehicle with high miles and expecting a perfect vehicle, well unfortunately it is just about impossible with any type Brand, Make or model vehicle to be in perfect condition. When you buy a use vehicle that is exactly what you get. This is someone else's old used vehicle.

I bought a 2000 eclispe 3 years ago. I've had problems with the paint since I've bought it!! It's oxcidizing!!! They painted the hood and trunk and roof, but said if it starts to oxidize on the sides of the car, they aren't fixing it??? I don't think they really fixed it right anyway. They probally just painted over it. But it started to oxidize on the sides. What a surprise?? Also now I have water coming in my car from the sunroof. I will NEVER buy another eclispe again!!! They DO SUCK!!!

Ugh. I'm buying an 02 Eclipse GT today for my 18th birthday. There seems to be a bubble in the wheel, but it is getting fixed. After all of these negative reviews, I don't know if I should purchase the vehicle :|.
