Hi, my wife has a 01 Alero and I'm a mechanic.

For the person with the water leak, I had the same problem with the water outlet on the right side of top end; it blows out. You must take off the P-steering pump and air filter to get to it; it must be replaced, you cannot use silicon, I tried twice. The piece is only about $15 and part stores carry it.

Now after you take the two bolts out, you must twist counter clockwise before pulling straight out, and it's very important do the opposite to install. This piece is very easy to break, so be patient and it will go in.

I've had many problems; people with emissions start with a new gas cap, then go to vacuum lines. The worst line is in the very front to the left. Start the car and give it gas; you will hear it.

Wheel bearing; you need the hub assembly. Got to go take care.

I also have a 01 Alero, my anti-lock light and track off lights are on as well as my check enginelight as soon as I replaced my brakes!! Not only that my low coolant light ison and the car has coolant. It also seems that now my bearings are gonna need to be replaced because the car is extremely loud on the road!! My cd player sux butt and refuses to play cd's unless I have something to "push" the cd down into the radio itself... I just paid this car off and I think I got myself a nice yellow lemon!!!

I bought my 2001 Olds Alero in May of 2007, and so far I have had to change two hub bearings, had to have the rack and pinion replaced, two sets of front brakes, and the dome light had to be rigged to keep from falling out.

Currently it is in the shop with a misfire in #3 cylinder, which could be a variety of costly items, and here's the kicker, a couple months back, my wife pushed the cruise control button and the accelerator stuck wide open on the interstate. She is OK but scared her to death. Of course that needed replaced too, at my expense. The only thing this car has going for it is its looks, mechanically it is a lemon. Anyone want to buy it?

Nice to hear I am not alone in this.

It is a possibility, How many miles, How many owners, What engine? I am the original owner of my 2001 GLS and I have 429,000 miles on the original engine. Its been a great car. Multiply an average of.42 cents a mile times an approximate 380,000 miles minus the price of the car, maintenance, gas, and up keep, I have still cleared around 90k in 6 years. How much do you want for the car?

Just had a new coil pack installed and a tune-up performed and it seems to be running OK now. With over a thousand dollars sunk in it over the last year I am hoping this will be the last of the problems for a while. If I sold it I could not even break even on it now but thanks anyway. Nice to hear someone has had luck with their Alero.

Well I came to the Internet to see if anyone else was having the same problems with their Alero as I am, and found myself shocked to see the extremely large number of identical complaints. The problem is there is nothing in this site except on post that actually addresses the problems. Thanks to the mechanic husband with the wife that keeps him busy with hers for addressing a few of the items. Sorry to say, none of which were my problems.

Like many others, the car dies out of the blue with no warning and for no apparent reason. There is no code in memory when using a car trouble code reader, which pretty much tells me that the problem is mechanical.

Additionally, it happened to me on the hottest day of the year, which really tightens the bond I have with this car. It died two other times before today, but I could just place it in neutral and restart with no problems until today.

I did buy some starting fluid and gave it a shot, and it started right up for about a second, indicating that problem is with fuel. I then started removing vacuum lines one at a time, then crank it, replace the hose, crank it, remove another, crank it, etc... and after replacing the third one, which was located on the lower right of the fuel body, gave it a shot of starting fluid and it fired right up.

This could or could not have actually had anything to do with the problem, but it is better to at least leave some tips that have been tried in the forum, so to not waste the time of the other folks that are sure to follow behind us.

Post a problem, followed by what you did to correct, or even attempted and failed to correct. That is the help folks are looking for when coming to this site for help, not just to complaints.
