A U. S gallon is smaller than an Imperial gallon hence the difference in mileage claims.
I don't know how you get 700+ km on one tank that I guess depends on the driver I get 600 highway and around 550 city on one tank ther's usually 3-4 liters of gas in a tank before fuel up I don't drive it till it stops. I drive extremely a lot 15000km on average every 3 months. And I drive highway 120km/h top speed. I don't find Yaris extremely fuel efficient as Echo RS 5 Door Hatchback gets 840 on one tank. It is also extremely underpowered and has a worst body roll I have ever seen in a 5 door hatchback. Other than that car is amazing it looks good, it rides good, and it has everything that a person might need in a car.
2007 Yaris 5 Door Hatchback (B Package)
5 Speed Manual.
When a yaris (or Fit) gets 50 mpg, pigs will fly. A more realistic expectation is 33-36. The EPA stickers are pure BALONEY.
A more realistic mileage figure for the Yaris on the highway is more like 30 to 33. I just talked with someone who bought a new one last month and they have yet to break the 30mpg barrier in it on the highway. I suspect this will go up when it is broken in, but I doubt that a Yaris or Fit will ever see 40 mpg in the real world. The EPA figures are ALWAYS 20% too high, and car salesmen ALWAYS lie about such things. As for the center mounted instrument clusters on some cars, it should hardly matter since most drivers never even look at the instruments anyway.
"Why is it that they post 34mpg in the city and 40 on the highway on the usa toyota site and 41-51 on the canada cause the cars only weigh about 35pounds different why are the oil companies screwing us again?"
Perhaps, it's because the standard Canadian road measurement is the kilometer.

The gallon that is used in Canada is the Imperial gallon. It's larger than the American gallon. There are 3.8 l per American gallon, and 4.54 l per Imperial gallon. That's the difference.
I just bought my 2007 Yaris Hatch Back (auto) two days ago on 1-31-07
I purchased it with the top option package and also added cruise control. In the one day that I have had to drive for work I have gotten 38 to 40 mpg. I drive a lot. 25% city/75% highway. For the price, with all the options, I can't see how you can beat it. It handles great and looks great. It may be a bit slow off the line, but I cruise between 70 and 80 MPH without any troubles. It doesn't seem to be going that fast either, smooth ride for a small car. Two co-workers came with me for a bit while working and both of them loved it. I had nothing, but compliments from them. They are both going to buy one as well. That sales guy is going to love me. Did I mention that both of the co-workers and I are men. This car is not just for the late teens/early 20's and the ladies. We are all in our mid to upper 30's. We love it.

People have preconceived notions about cars that are 100% wrong. The average Scion buyer is 35, not the 21 year old that ads seem to portray. My friend bought his xB when he was 47. The average Mustang buyer is a woman who prefers a six cylinder and automatic. And so on.
Congrats on your car. While I know automatics will slow a four cylinder car, the reality is your 0 - 60 times are historically faster than a lot of cars in the past.
I personally feel the Fit and Yaris are hideous looking cars. But that is MY opinion. I would love it if these companies can put their rather relible/fuel efficient powertrains into "normal" looking cars. Remember the Tercel??? Just an example, but it was pretty normal looking, but pretty efficient. Just think how great it would be to have the modern day technology/economy in a car that looks nice?
"The Yaris AUTOMATIC goes 0 - 60 in 10.7 seconds, or about the same time as the average overweight underpowered SUV clogging America's highways."
It's actually pretty hard to find an SUV that does 0-60 in under 9 seconds nowadays. Most do it under 8 seconds as well. SUV's are not overweight either because they are meant to be heavy and have plenty of power to move them around as well as tow and pull trailers and the like. And why are we comparing the yaris to an SUV anyway? It's an answer to a question nobody asked.
"Oh, this must be another one of your "facts" - that I own a Toyota.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I haven't owned a Toyota since 1987.
Any other "facts" you care to present?"
Yeah here's a fact for ya. If you haven't owned a Toyota since 1987 then you shouldn't be posting about them since you have no idea what living with one is like anymore nor would you receive comments about the cars styling. Here's another fact- I own a 2006 Toyota Prius- and I really like it (shock!!! right?) but that doesn't change the FACT that it looks like a lozenge. But I don't mind the strange styling when I got a new car with Navi, surround sound, leather, and bluetooth wireless out the door for a 27.5k cash deal that can still get 45+ MPG.
"Wait, because I haven't owned a Toyota I can't comment on the LOOKS of a Toyota I have seen on the roads, at the dealership, and at the autoshow?
And did you think your Prius looked like a lozenge before you bought it since, using your logic, you can't comment or make judgements on looks until you've bought something. Do you blindfold yourself when looking at cars and are then surprised after you've signed the paperwork?"
It's not that you don't own a Toyota, rather the fact that you haven't owned one in 20 years. My whole point is don't try to debunk facts about cars when you haven't even owned a car from the manufacturer in 20 years. But of course instead of reading and commenting on what I and others wrote you twist what people say to try and make jokes out of them and end up making a fool out of yourself to people who know better. And when I bought the prius it was my opinion that it looked like a lozenge, but after I owned it for awhile and heard what others thought about the looks it became a FACT because a lot of people think it looks like a lozenge.
"8:36 STILL hasn't explained why someone who does not own the car cannot comment on the LOOKS of the car.
Guess people will do anything to argue indefensible points."
If you read carefully you'll see that I never even said that someone who doesn't own a particular car can't comment on it's looks. You haven't owned a toyota in 20 years so I don't even know why your posting in the toyota forum. Anything you know about these cars is just here say and that makes you a pointless addition to this conversation.
P.S. I hope your having as much fun as I am.
I leased a 2007 Yaris S Sedan in March. During the first 800 miles I averaged 34-36 mpg city/highway combined. I recently took an extended trip keeping in the speed limit and not using air conditioning, etc. I was very pleasantly surprised to average 44-46 mpg. The Yaris' potential mpg is underrated!
I've gotten as high as 46 mpg overall with my Yaris (sedan, 5 speed manual) in the summer. On winter gas it gets around 40 mpg overall. My driving is about 15% city and 85% long country roads (at about 50 -55 mph). I got the 4-door sedan because I liked the looks better than the hatchback. The bodystyle is 'OK', could be better, it's fun to drive, nimble, better than the old automatic truck I used to commute in.
