2005 Land Rover Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 BMW M68

Summary:

You get what you pay for

Faults:

Normal repairs along the way - alternator, water pump, radiator, PCV valve with oil separator and hoses (if your Rangie starts blowing lots of smoke out the exhaust, then it's time to replace these). All small quick fixes.

Only real problem was after about 250,000 km the air suspension started having problems, so I went the cheaper, easier fix and put in a coil spring replacement kit. Honestly you can hardly tell the difference. Air suspension is overrated if you ask me.

General Comments:

Fantastic to drive, reasonable on the gas for a near three ton truck. Built to last. How much do I love this truck? I bought a 2011 TDV8 to go alongside it in the garage. 2 Rangies are better than one.

P.s. I haven't found these expensive to own as I do all my own mechanical work.

Cheers!

If you do your own work, you definitely didn't buy the car from new. Did you mean you got the car with 250000 km on it?

My father bought it new and drove it up to 220k (in 7 years), and then gave it to me as he was so appalled at the trade in price they offered him when buying a new one. Better to keep it in the family he said. The repairs done in that time as listed above were the radiator and alternator. Serviced by Land Rover for him and since 220k by me.

2004 Land Rover Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8

Summary:

A fantastic comfortable 4WD with lots of toys to play with. Highly recommended

Faults:

Bought the Vogue 12 months ago. Converted to gas. Cost AU$5500.

Not long after the purchase, replaced the water pump, which BURST! Cost AU$1100. Very expensive for a water pump.

I previously owned a RR, and had hoped for the same reliability I had from my 1986 Highline Range Rover. This is the problem with secondhand cars. You do not know what the servicing has been like. My experience with RR has been positive so long as you maintain it rigorously. Do not miss a service, and use quality parts, not necessarily genuine.

General Comments:

A beautiful 4WD. We have not used it for outback driving yet. We do intend to. The car is still fun to drive. It is comfortable, easy to drive for such a big heavy car. People always comment on how much they like the car. On long trips the comfort means you can stay alert for longer and arrive fresh. Absolute comfort.

All the electronics do make it heavy (just under 3 tonne), but they are useful and fun to use such as the satnav including off road coordinates.

The gas conversion has not affected the performance in any way, but has halved the fuel bill.

If you like it, buy it. Even though it is made in England, which does not have the best reputation for build quality.

Buying the water pump online may have been less painful on the wallet.

1986 Land Rover Range Rover Highline 3.5 V8

Summary:

Range Rover designed for the Outback and performed as designed. As a very competent 4WD with comfort

Faults:

Motor replaced after 300000km. Regular maintenance meant this car was really reliable. We replaced the motor with a reconditioned 3.9 motor and a Wolf ECU. This was a big mistake. The Wolf and motor never got on. After the conversion the car was hard to start. When it was running it was great. Powerful and strong motor disadvantaged by the ECU.

As said, we replaced the motor, and all other components stayed as original. I think this is impressive considering the abuse the car put up with. Although we maintained the car rigorously, the interior plastic was of poor quality and started to decay.

General Comments:

This was a 4WD used as a 4WD. We had driven all over Australia. We had been bogged, rolled over etc. This is an impressive endorsement of the Range Rover. This is the 3.5 V8 ECU controlled with the 4 speed Automatic ZF box.

All running well after 380000km. Very impressive.
