1992 Volvo 940 GL 2.3

Summary:

Tough, trustworthy, reliable swedish tank

Faults:

Radiator at 220 000.

Two timing belts as required.

Discs and pads as required.

One power window - faulty switch.

Speed worked when it wanted to.

Aircon died.

General Comments:

Even though these are cars are getting on, they seem to age very well. I bought mine in 2006 with 220,000km, and sold it in May 2013 with 375,000, and it barely gave me any trouble. I always had it serviced every 7500km (mostly by my mechanic, but sometimes myself). This is an easy car to work on, and I am no mechanic.

This car only broke down twice in my 6 years ownership, and once was a flat battery and the second time was also something minor.

I only sold the car due to a number of potentially expensive leaks. One was the rear main seal, which would require the gearbox to be removed, and the other was a power steering leak. The body had ZERO rust.

Minor annoyances were the speedo (worked when it wanted), air conditioning played up a few times, and one power window kept playing up.

On the whole, a very tough, reliable car, which I always felt very safe in. I would strongly recommend this car, especially for students. Just do yourself a favour. Find one that has been well kept, and keep up the maintenance, and this car will serve you very, very well. Last of the rear-wheeled drive Volvo legends...

1993 Volvo 940 GLE 2.3 petrol

Summary:

Good, solid, easy to maintain car, purchased for A$4000, which I believe makes it good value

Faults:

Drivers side front seat slightly worn, and the seat belt has worn through seat material.

This car was a one owner low mileage car, which has had only limited use the last few years of the previous ownership. Due to an unknown service record, I have had the cambelt replaced, and also had a new crankcase ventilation kit installed.

Car had a check engine engine light and SRS lights displaced at time of purchase. The oxygen sensor was replaced and the SRS reset by VOLVO specialist, and I have had no further problems.

Front disc rotors on car need replacement, and I have bought replacement rotors (Brembo) at approximately half the quoted price of genuine parts.

General Comments:

This car is a very comfortable vehicle on highway. It's not a performance vehicle, but is quite adequate.

I have found it to be reasonably economical; 32MPG at 110kmh on the open road.

Car has now done 112,000kms, no major problems slight leak of coolant on waterpump, no cause for concern.

Car regularly averaging 32mpg on highway.

Used car on holiday to NW West Australia, very predictable handling on dirt and rough road conditions, pleasantly surprised by ability of car on bad roads fully laden.

1996 Volvo 940 Polar Estate 2.3i turbo LPT

Summary:

Build to Last

Faults:

Temperature Sensor Bosch injection system failed.

Had to replace plastic topped aluminum radiator, which is a problem with most modern cars nowadays.

General Comments:

This is the last of the real Volvo's. The build quality is superb and reliability is very good. All the (small) infancy problems of the 700-series and earlier 900's have disappeared. In a recent safety rating report by the Monash University in Melbourne the Volvo 900 series scored among the very best. You certainly feel very very safe in this car. The brakes are fantastic (ABS) and everything feels solid and durable. The seats are very comfortable and firm. Fuel economy is not great in and around town, because this solid wagon weighs 1500 kg, but out on the open road you can manage 10 lt/100km if you keep your right foot under control. Legroom for rear passengers is generous and there's heaps of space in this wagon. I have talked to other 940 owners with high mileage (over 300.000 k's) cars and the key seems to be regular maintenance. I have the same experience. Maintain this car and it will serve you for a very long time.
