1997 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Jxi 2.5L

Summary:

The only good thing about this car is that it's a convertible

Faults:

Seat belt holsters are loose and slip out of the seat. Very ugly looking. The grooves are worn and I see no way of repairing this, other than replacing the entire seat. For now I just have some fancy scarfs tied around them.

At around 135,00 miles my check engine light was on. Upon getting it checked, I ended up having to replace the distributor system. Check engine light has not reappeared.

Now I am experiencing a slow crank start. I've been told by one mechanic it was a bad fuel filter, a $600 dollar job. Two other mechanics said it was a bad battery. So, of course I go with that and change the battery myself. The problem still exists. I was recently told that the new battery was bad. Had that checked, it was not bad so, I don't really know what my next move will be.

My ABS light has been on and my brakes began to wail and the pedal was cranking. I was told it was the rear ABS sensor. I removed that this morning and am going to try and find a used one because it's a $300 dollar part. Hopefully that works, guess I'll get back to you on that.

Overall, I have put a new engine and radiator in. Had brakes done twice, recently wheel cylinder, shoes, pads, and rotors.

General Comments:

This car has been very expensive to maintain. I don't know if it's because it's a Chrysler or if it's because it's an older car.

When I first bought it, a mechanic told me to get rid of it. I wish I had listened.

I did get me to Florida twice, I live in New Jersey...but...

I'm getting rid of it in the spring.

I wrote this review and here's a condition update.

After removing the rear speed sensor, the car is braking normal, no more sounds. I will put a new sensor in. Dash lights have been going out randomly now. I've seen this complaint often. And the best part, it would not start this morning. I'm assuming it's the starter. May have blown due to the constant slow cranking I've been dealing with. Also experience leaking inside car when rain is heavy. Tire rods are worn and need replacing.

I'm at 151,000 miles.

I don't believe slow cranking would be caused by a fuel filter, and costing $600.00 to replace it if I couldn't due it myself, I'd be looking for a new mechanic at that price; that's a little unreal.

1997 Chrysler Sebring Convertible JXI 2.5

Summary:

Love it

Faults:

Lower ball joints bad. Recall issued in 1998, 2000.

General Comments:

This has been a great car. No leaking or top problems. The previous owner took great care.

We keep all repairs up; good tires etc.

One thing Sebrings need to keep good performance is Seafoam every month. It's cheap, but prevents acceleration problems, and keeps the gas clean.

Don't use cheap parts; they don't like them, it causes other problems. Use OEM as much as possible.

I also have Jeep 94; great, very little problems with 207.000 miles.

Good luck to all.

General Comments:

Bought this car for my wife as a Valentine's present in 1997, just two months before the birth of our first child. She loves the car and won't think of getting rid of it! Now our daughter is excited about the possibility of having it as her first car when she starts driving. The car is fantastic, and still looks great and runs like it did when first bought.

I think we have almost gotten our money's worth out of this car.
