1999 Daewoo Lanos

Summary:

Great buy!

Faults:

The radio stopped working after I drained the battery once. The dealer couldn't get it to work either. This is the only problem I have had with this car!

General Comments:

The good: I bought this car for something like $6,000 new and frankly didn't expect it to run so well and so smoothly for so long. It has great gas mileage, looks sharp and is just fun to drive around.

The bad: The customer service is not so great from the dealer (they lost their Daewoo representative), and the radio just sucked to begin with.

If you try looking in your owner's manual you will see something about an antitheft code that you have to enter on the radio to restore operation. Can't believe that the dealer couldn't figure this out.

Faults:

The check engine light has been going on recently. Not sure why. I thought it was due to air filter I purchased recently. I'm afraid to take it in to the dealer because it will probably take them a long time to figure out exactly what's wrong with it. I thought too that perhaps it was the change in gas that I used to use. I used Arco gas, but switched recently to Chevron. But honestly, I have no idea why the light keeps turning on. Perhaps it is due to fuel injection needing cleaning. Can anyone offer me any advice on this?

If anyone has any suggestions/ideas to turn off the check engine light or what my problem may be, you can email me at alejandro.hernandez@usace.army.mil

General Comments:

Is there a way that one can turn off the check engine light. I unplug the negative terminal over night and this turns off the check engine light for a good part of a day. But then it turns on again. While traveling at fast velocities, it turns off. When stuck in traffic, it turns right back on. This is really annoying.

I know this is 6 months past the review, but I had the same problem with my 91 Lanos... turned out to be a bad crankshaft sensor...

The sensor is only about 25 dollars and labor to change it ran about 200.00 dollars.

The computer codes will tell you the problem if you have them checked.

Good luck.

1999 Daewoo Lanos LX 1.6

Summary:

A really fun car to drive

Faults:

Road noise is quite high.

General Comments:

A really fun car to drive. The car is geared properly for once in that down shifting to d3 on the automatic transmission will not shift out. The RPM keep on coming with more power for passing.

The small width allows one to use the whole lane straightening out curves. It reminds me of a midget.

The car is really solid on the road. I hit the binders at nearly one hundred MPH when I saw a policeman in a speed trap, not a shimmy or a shake. I hope I don't get too many tickets driving this thing.

No lack of power in this car.

Totally, I want to just drive around for fun, upgrade the brakes if you want to drive that fast. I did to mine, and try just slamming those on and letting the ABS take over... do it on a straight road; I did it on a sharp corner, found myself in a ditch. The car ran right after we pulled it out, I needed to clean out all the water though, that is about it, my antenna broke off though... still working on fixing that.

1999 Daewoo Lanos SE 1.6 litre

Summary:

A real pocket rocket!!

Faults:

Cam cover starting to leak in the front.

When new, the left rear window (power) made a noise when operating it, but the dealership took care of it.

Driver's side mirror was sticky when new, the dealer corrected it.

Other than that, nothing major.

General Comments:

With a set of rims and side emblems that say "Lanos" above the letters "SE", the car looks better from the side (seemed naked).

I've added a K&N air filter, Bosch platinum+4 spark plugs, eliminated the resinator and muffler and replaced them with 2 1/2 pipe to a cherry bomb in back and the car really performs now.

I love (and get compliments on) the interior with its swirls and color scheme. I love it!!
