1999 GMC Jimmy SLT 4.3 Vortec

Summary:

This truck is a tease; it is sexy and acts like your friend, but in the end it just wants money

Faults:

My 1999 GMC Jimmy was bought with around 99,000 miles. I mean I guess that is not that bad.

Looks great, sounds great, but as soon as 100,000 miles hit, I have been buying parts every month, maybe 2 if I am lucky.

Replaced brakes and rotors, which is normal, but over $150.00. Then the alternator went out.

OK, the truck is pretty old, but still not too disappointed.

Replaced the belt; that's normal too. Then the idler arm started getting weak, so there is another 25 bucks, then the idler pulley, there is about another 15 bucks, and I can hear bearings or something going wrong in the front end also, which I do not look forward to buying.

But now it is stuck in 4x4 and I am scared to drive it. At first I just thought the 4 wheel drive system was junk, but it's even worse than that; now it doesn't even work right. God only knows how much money that is going to cost me.

Also gas is horrible in the time being over 2 dollars a gallon, and I've seen that my truck is pretty hard on tires too. 2 tires replaced; pretty cheap tires were $250.00, so I am going to probably sell this because I am not a NFL star, I cannot afford to be rebuilding an SUV.

General Comments:

Very nice SUV if you have the money to keep it in the shop.

If you want a nice SUV like this with no problems, I would buy a 2009 of something else with a warranty; you would actually save money in the long run.

The motor is strong, but if you punch it, believe me sooner or later you will be regretting the fun you had.

Seats are horrible for travel. I am 18 and feel like I'm 45 when I get out after an hour drive.

1999 GMC Jimmy SLT 4.0 V6

Summary:

Wish I would have bought a full sized truck

Faults:

My key kept getting stuck in the ignition.

Had to replace ball joints.

Driver's door wore hinge pins three times.

Eats batteries every two years.

One new alternator.

General Comments:

There is a release button for the key problem and it works.

Engine hesitation is a mass air flow sensor problem, needs to be cleaned every time you change oil, very cheap and easy!

Overall it is a great running truck with plenty of power. Just wish I had the money to pay someone else to work on it.

Also the four wheel drive won't engage unless it senses it needs to; nothing wrong with the switch! People need to watch who they take the car to, as many will take advantage.

1999 GMC Jimmy SLT 4.3L V6

Summary:

Could've been so much better.

Faults:

Alternator at 50k.

Rear windshield wiper at 50K.

Brake pads and rotors at 60k.

Fuel gauge at 60k.

Transfer case at 75k.

Lights on radio at 75k.

Ball joints broke while driving at 90k.

Seat handles broke at 100k.

Door hinge pins at 100k.

Front end noise at 105k, probably bearings.

General Comments:

Definitely a love/hate relationship. I like the styling and off road sensibilities, but the reliability could be better. I find this vehicle to be very sluggish and very poor on gas mileage.

Good thing I bought an extended warranty!

1999 GMC Jimmy SLX V6

Summary:

Junk

Faults:

Great to be able to blow off steam.

The BIG/LITTLE 3 deserve all they get by selling JUNK to their customers. This piece of CRAP has 50000 miles on it, and thus far you name it and it has been defective.

Heater core leaks at 49000 miles; cost to repair at GMC dealer $1500.

Door hinge pins & bushings gone; cost $220.

Now front wheel hubs shot; another $750.

Today the service engine light; $150 at GMC dealer just to hook up their computer to check.

I have always been a GM guy; NEVER again. I had three new Cadi. SLS and all 3 had the same issues; air conditioner, heater, tail lights. GM quite simply CANNOT make a good car.

My 1999 Q-45 Infiniti has 180000 miles on it, and I have NOT had to replace even one light bulb. YES I have put brakes and tires on it.

My 2004 M-45 Infiniti has 45000 miles on it; same thing, NOT one penny in repairs.

I wish I would have read this site prior to buying this PIECE OF CRAP GM product. They should be ASHAMED selling such defective products.

I guess NOW it is PAY BACK time for US auto makers, and they DESERVE everything they get. These guys have DESTROYED the average Joe's trust in their product, and their ability to run the BIG 3 and do what is right.

General Comments:

SORRY, NOT one good thing to say about this product. I WILL NEVER buy a US made auto again, NEW or USED.
