1989 Mazda 626 LX

Summary:

Great first car

Faults:

The alternator belt is constantly squeaking.

Needed new suspension.

Some strange wiring that made the windshield wipers work on and off, until it was fixed.

General Comments:

I received this car for my 16th birthday, and I love it!

There hasn't been any major breakdowns, just new struts when I first got it.

It is very reliable and good on gas. Almost all of the features still work. The window on the passenger side doesn't always work, and the oscillating vent doesn't work either.

There is a lot of rust on the wheel wells of the car, but living in a climate where there is winter 7 months of the year, that is to be expected on a 21 year old car.

It is also comfortable and has lots of room. The seats fold down, so many times I have been able to fit multiple snowboards and bicycles.

I would recommend this car to anyone. It is reliable, even in -30!

1989 Mazda 626 DX 2.2L

Summary:

Rock solid, reliable, sweet feel performer

Faults:

The muffler was the most constant replacement on this vehicle, like clockwork for us about every two years.

There was a recall on the door latch which was replaced under warranty.

General Comments:

This has to have been my favourite car. Mileage was 35-38 mpg on the highway, and it was peppy enough, though not too noisy. Handling was sweet. The manual transmission was smooth. Other than mufflers, nothing ever seemed to go wrong with this car. It warmed up a little slow in really cold weather so cardboard in front of the rad was needed. The A/C was adequate for most summer conditions.

When buying new, I chose this over the Corsica and never looked back.

My car needed mufflers often, but has over 309,000 miles, and runs perfect, with no transmission or engine overhaul yet!

1989 Mazda 626 DX 2.2 FI

Summary:

Not worth the price I paid

Faults:

Battery cables corroded at 113995 miles Starter went out at 114950 Seats worn Rear defrost doesn't work Gas door sticks badly.

General Comments:

This car runs great, when it is running. It idles abit rough though. The ride is a bit rough, but handling is crisp. Front tires tend to lose traction on wet roads even with good quality tires. Good feel of the road, decent fuel economy.

My 626 is 15 years old. I had bought it through my work a salvage yard with a title and started driving it back and forth to work racking up almost 70 miles a day. The only thing that has gone wrong was the cooling fan. It is a nice gold color, but does have some fading. My waxing it every week, although doesn't help it. I have managed to beat newer cars with it a few times I tried. Just from light to light. I love it and intend to get another car just to put her up and restore her to the way she looked brand new.

My 1989 Mazda 626 LX had the starter go at 75,000 miles.

It is now 17 years old as of September 2005.

No other problems with it.

Great car. What a deal.

Paid $1500 for it a year ago and the starter is the only thing that went.

1989 Mazda 626 LX 2.2 four banger

Summary:

One of the most well-built cars ever

Faults:

What a wonderful car. I wouldn't have anything to put in this box if I had written this a week ago.

The transmission finally gave in at just over 300,000 miles requiring it to be rebuilt.

A new clutch at 285,000 miles.

General Comments:

If you find one in good condition, grab it!

The seats are nice and very durable.

My oscillating center vents still work!

This car is solid and stable, nothing fancy and nothing tricky.

1989 Mazda 626 LX 2.2

Summary:

Mazda please make this car again

Faults:

The common problems from 1988 to 1992 are the exhaust repairs. Also front struts and ball joints, rotors and pads, valve cover leaks and that annoying vibration caused from tired motor mounts. Also the rack and pinion gets a little sloppy however doesn't seem to worsen. I had 3 of these cars licensed on the road with 3 for parts so the repair costs were minimal. The one problem that kept me guessing for some time was the water leak on the passenger rear floor board, (rear shock tower decay.

General Comments:

This is the best car that I have had the privilege to own. the gas mileage is excellent the handling is superb and the car literally does not break down. I continue to search for these cars in good shape however due to the Canadian climate the under bodies take there share of weather. exterior body lasts quite well with annual oil sprays. The interior is durable and the LX trim is the best choice. The 2.2 delivers great power and the transmission continues to perform with constant filter changes
