2001 Mitsubishi Galant DE 2.4L 4 cylinder

Summary:

Sexy car, excellent quality!

Faults:

I've had my Galant for 3 years now, and other than routine maintenance (oil changes, tires, brakes) I've had only one issue with this car. Two weeks ago, at 88,000 miles, my alternator went out.

General Comments:

This car is very reliable, comfortable, and is very responsive considering it's a four cylinder.

The Galant is very spacious inside, more in the front than the rear.

The interior attributes of the car pre-date the stylish features of the exterior. But even still, the interior is adequate for everyday use and is even good enough for making long trips.

The Galant has the reliability and quality of a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, but for much less cost.

I really enjoy my car and when I pay it off (almost there) I'm going to keep it and buy a new Galant, preferably a silver 2008 Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart.

2001 Mitsubishi Galant ES 3.0 V 6

Summary:

Cheaply manufactured

Faults:

When replacing battery had to take to dealership to recalibrate the electronics 3 times before it would run kinda properly. Seats worn horribly. Gas mileage declining as more miles add up. Air conditioner condensation drainage malfunction. Lack of accessbility to the spark plugs.

General Comments:

I will never own a Mitsubishi ever again. I don't trust it as far as I can throw it...

2001 Mitsubishi Galant GTZ 3.0L V6

Summary:

The most reliable car I ever owned

Faults:

Minor complaints: The Mitsu/Infinity stereo system should be scrapped and get a nice aftermarket head unit in there. It played perfectly for the first two years, but quickly started to develop "hiccups" like not wanting to play cds that it had played in the past, or skipping/freezing tracks during play.

The heater unit became a bit sketchy during the third year. It wouldn't heat even after a 30-min commute, but at other times it worked great. Probably a thermostat issue that seems to have fixed itself.

My worst complaint about the Galant.. the tires they give you. The Goodyear Eagles have this ribbing along the sidewall that rubs constantly against the wheel and is annoying to no end. Changed the tires, sound is gone.

Trade-In Value is ridiculously low for this great car. Don't buy new like I did.

Fuel economy could be better in the low 30's at least.

General Comments:

No major mechanical problems with the car which is a welcome relief as previous Mitsu cars had plenty of issues. Changed tires about every 50K, changed timing belt at 100K, changed front brake pads at 100K, changed transmission fluid at 100K, change oil every 5K...what more can you ask from a car?

Don't go with anything less than a V6 in this car as it is a bit heavy in the turns, but has great pickup for a 200hp motor.

I'd pit it against a comparable Honda or Toyota any day of the week

2001 Mitsubishi Galant ES

Summary:

Not a reliable car. Too many repairs needed in too short of time.

Faults:

Have replaced rear trailing arm bushings twice, shocks once (numerous suspension problems). Crank Sensor replaced, then 3 days later the starter had to be replaced. Have to replace brake pads every 3-4 months. Battery that came with car died after 12 months.

General Comments:

1. The car is not reliable and I never know when it is not going to start.

2. Too many noises, squeaks, rattles too soon after I purchased the vehicle.

3. I would never buy another Mitsubishi vehicle again.

Generally if brakes need to be replaced that often it is the drivers fault. Brakes simply do not wear excessively unless there is something mechanically wrong with the calipers or rotors, or the problem could be the driver. In this case I would say it was the driver, if something was mechanically wrong it would've been found by now.

The Galant is notorious for having brake problems. Consumer Reports, among others, has rated the brakes below average on every Galant model since 1999.

Well if consumer reports says that. Don't buy it. Just that simple. They are very good cars overall.

08-25-2006 passenger electric wire fire in door panel while pushing control on power window to go down. This is on a 2000 Galant ES V6. As well as rust starting on the passenger rear tire well. Transmition issue in 2003 that was due to an engineering issue on a part that was covered up until pushing Mitsubishi at the corporate level management.

2005 Mitsubishi Gallant SE--Brake pedal suddenly falls as if loss of pressure. Sometimes when I'm idling at a light and my foot is on the pedal, the brake pedal drops down an inch or two. I think the car is losing pressure on the brake line... after pumping the brakes, the pressure is restored. This is somewhat scary and I don't know what's causing it. The car is NOT equipped with ABS, but with standard braking system. I hope this problem won't occur during a sudden stop on the highway or near a school stop.
