2017 Mitsubishi Outlander SE AWC 2.4

Summary:

Best small AWD SUV for tall drivers and passengers

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

We bought this SUV primarily because it was great for taller drivers and passengers (including the back seat). It has all wheel drive and high fuel economy ratings, was made in Japan and has high ownership dependability stats, and it came with the longest (10 year) warranty of any new SUV here in Canada. The decision was a no brainer.

We were pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it is to drive, especially with the CVT.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

What other small AWD CUVs did you test against the Outlander?

These get a bad rap, generally speaking.

Not as good on gas as it should be, could be faster, interior quality, engine etc.

Keep in touch, and let us know the above criticism is warranted.

I suspect not.

I was surprised at the negative reviews. They all seem to be by professional reviewers, not owners. I don’t care about how fast it goes 0-60. It’s quiet, smooth, comfortable, and gets great fuel economy for an all wheel drive SUV. I can’t see where any of the others in the same class are any better, and they all come with 1/2 the length of warranty. Supposedly they made the Outlander a lot more quiet and comfortable for the 2016 model change and it shows.

Ha, I've been driving SUVs for 40 years, and so I would say most of them! That said, this one drives much more like a car than a traditional truck-based SUV. It reminds me of an updated, higher clearance, AWD version of my old Volvo station wagon. :) Same upright seating and lots of visibility -- especially with its stock back up camera.

Same could be said of all crossovers these days. They all are essentially tall station wagons.
