2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette V6

Summary:

Great value!

Faults:

The notorious head gasket was replaced prior to us owning the vehicle.

Had some issues with VCR (reverse button stuck, sometimes the fip down screen isn't a clear picture and you have to move it back and forth to get a good picture).

The rubber stripping has come off both sliding doors.

Windshield wiper arm loosened while in use (retightened and seems to be OK now).

General Comments:

Decent gas mileage for a van (22-23 mpg with general driving). we have the loaded model and it was a great deal for the money.

Drives well, easy to get in and out of, great room inside. Overall very happy with it.

2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette Premiere w/ Gold Package exten 3.8L V6 185 HP

Summary:

Roomy smooth riding grocery getter

Faults:

Gas tank meter stopped working in '03 just had that fixed.

LCD screen was stolen dealer replaced it.

Overheated twice this summer. 1) Overheated on boat ramp pulling our boat out of the water.

2) 3 miles from our summerhouse it overheated halfway uphill pulling the boat. (Luckily our '98 Maxima has a hitch too, we pushed it onto the side of the road and brought the boat home and came back for it. (It drove after being towed uphill by a car almost 1/2 ton lighter than it (Maxima) )

The rear speak ers stopped working a year ago.

General Comments:

It's not exactly built for towing as our Maxima tows our boat much better than the Silhouette and only has 5 more HP.

Good comfy car though it has been all over the country From Chicago to Washington D.C. twice and From Chicago To San Francisco to Los Angeles and Back to Chicago once. Not to mention pulling Uhaul trailers 170 miles From Chicago, IL to Peoria, IL.

I have driven a 2003 Montana and ridden in a Venture that I think is an 02 and like the Silhouette best by far based on the interior, I would take Captain seats over those 8 passenger Montana's with bench seats any day. In 2000 we were trying to decide between the three and I know I made the best choise.

Misery from day one; there is not enough room on this web site to list all the things that have broken. I've easily spent $10,000 to repair in 5 years. (motor twice and tranny once; at only 145,000 km's I could take it no more. Will never own another GM product) This car was very well taken care by both owners, and never mistreated.

We have had our Silhouette since 2004, and it's been a great van.

GM made several mistakes, which I doubt they fixed even in the recent models.

It often needs coolant flushes for no reason whatsoever, might as well replace the thermostats while you are at it.

It's a great tow vehicle, but certainly not stronger than a regular car, towing capacity is a joke.

Overall pretty decent considering the price and its great on long trips. We usually have it fully loaded, 4 passengers and a 1000lbs (jet ski + trailer) towed behind it without any issues.

We call it the enclosed pick up truck, and it's actually been more worry free recently since it hit 370,000 kms.

2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette 3.8L V6

Summary:

It has been a great van for my family

Faults:

The first thing to go was the A/C, which went out 1 day after the warranty expired, figures. But GM replaced it anyway. THANK YOU.

The dealer also fixed the air leveling system, which was leaking when we bought it, and also replaced the tires.

The windshield wipers started "parking" in the up position when turned off at around 75,000 miles.

The manifold gasket went at 95,000, which is longer than expected as I later found out, costing $700.00 to fix.

The fan switch speeds 1-4, stopped working and high speed was intermittent until I fixed it by taking apart the switch. Still working on the other speeds.

The battery was replaced, the water pump is leaking, and the alternator has been replaced.

All in all, except the manifold gasket, normal wear and tear.

General Comments:

All in all, the van has been really good.

We have taken it to Colorado twice, and overheated once in the Summer, due to filling the tank before going into the mountains after driving all day in the heat, not recommended in any car or truck.

It has great acceleration, and drives fine.

The back seat hookups for the radio/CD are great for road trips.

The gas mileage on the highway is good, city is so so.

The removeable seats are great, storing them is another story.
