2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4.0 liter

Summary:

This car is terrible, and GM needs to do something to fix these cars

Faults:

Lets first begin with the mirrors. I have had to replace both drivers and passengers side mirrors.

I had to replace passenger side and drivers side rear window motor.

I had to replace the circuit board for the rear lights.

I had to replace knobs on the A.C./heater, and also the fan does not work until it is on 3.

I also replaced the hazard unit that kept going on and off, and which controls the security.

The car would also would not start unless I had to wait 10 minutes.

The funny thing is my friend has the same car as I do, just the GT, and he has had most of the same problems I have.

And now I have a huge oil leak.

General Comments:

I would not recommend you buy this type of car. So many things go wrong with it and it just not worth putting the money for this type of car.

I'm sure there must be some issues with the Grand Am or there wouldn't be so many problems cited in these comments. All I can say is that in 9 years I've spent a whopping $27 in total repairs on mine. $10 was for a headlight bulb and $17 was for front brake pads at 70,000 miles (the rear are still original).

Members of my Grand Am club have never reported ANY of the problems seen in these comments, and some of these cars have over 200,000 miles on them. Mine looks, drives and feels like brand new. We've spent less on the past 10 domestic vehicles we've owned than on any ONE of the 3 Japanese imports we stupidly bought since 1985. I'd stick with GM any day.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Summary:

I belive that the car is a good buy, you just have to stay two steps a head of the maintenance

Faults:

FIRST THINGS FIRST. THIS CAR WAS AMAZING FOR THE FIRST 24 HOURS, but then things went downhill.

My power steering was completely gone the morning after I bought my car. I bought it from a private dealer, so of course he's been no help.

My signals work when they feel like it, but I have yet to find some of the techniques others have used.

Now I am about to have my brake pads changed, but after reading here this morning, I think I might as well buy rotors also, just in case.

General Comments:

The car is warm and inviting in my opinion. I had a 2003 Monte Carlo, my former dream car, and it took time to get used to. The Grand Am felt like it was mine the first time I drove it. I love speed and it's a GT, so that's a plus. I actually love my car, but I see that there are problems, so I may only keep it another 9 months or so.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 2.4

Summary:

Not sure it's worth the money

Faults:

Security system keeps disabling the car.

I'm told I need to replace the ignition switch.

The passenger window fell down into the door.

It uses about 2 quarts of oil in a month.

General Comments:

This car gets very good gas mileage, about 28 mpg in my area (hills, mountains). Looks good.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L Twin Cam

Summary:

This car may seem great... but looks can be deceiving...

Faults:

Everything was great for about the first year and a half, and that's when all my problems started...

The catalytic converter had to be replaced twice now. 100,000 miles and 112,000 miles.

I have had four new coil packs for the cylinders in the past four months... 110,000-113,000 miles.

The drivers side power window has broken twice now, and been replaced.

Sounds like the timing belt is going to need to be replaced soon.

The moon roof and passenger side door leaks when a hard rain or a serious car wash is taking place.

Makes a sputtering noise when in any gear except neutral.

Makes a hard grinding noise when turning corners either way...

Was my first car...

General Comments:

I got my car custom painted back in July of 07, and ever since everything was taken off and put back on, I have had nothing but problems...

The car is comfortable, but rides low.

The brakes are not very quick.

The steering is loose.

The stock speakers sound horrible...

Back seat is not very roomy.

Overall it was an OK car (minus the problems), but it's hit almost the ten year mark... But still should not be breaking down at only 113,000 miles!!
