1998 Pontiac Grand Prix

Summary:

Overall I think it's a great car

Faults:

My supercharger pulley was making a rattling noise when I was speeding down the road. I took it to the dealership and they told me that the pulley was loose. They told me that they would replace it for $75, so I paid it and moved on.

About a month later the car wasn't running right, so I had my uncle run a diagnostic test on it and it said that nothing was wrong.

In my free time I love working on it. The people who think that they can buy a sports car and expect it to run forever without regular maintenance are crazy. If you start so work on them and take care of them, it will make a huge difference.

General Comments:

This is one of my favorite cars, and I've always wanted one, but my parents said that it was too fast for me, but once I took them with me for a test drive before I purchased it, they were sold. I think they wanted it more than me.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.8 supercharged

Summary:

Amazing!!!

Faults:

Nothing yet, but the transmission may be starting to slip.

General Comments:

Awesome car and amazing to drive. Just remember supercharger oil should be topped off at every oil changed. Most people don't do this, which is why they burn up the supercharger.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8 V6

Summary:

Meh?

Faults:

Heater core blew costing over $900.

Radiator blew at 160,000 miles.

Oil pan gasket is currently leaking.

Intake manifold gaskets blew, causing oil and coolant to mix in the engine, $800 repair.

Steering has had a crick in it since about 80,000 and makes popping noises.

Headlights are both fogged over with condensation.

General Comments:

The car was manufactured at the Fairfax plant in Kansas City... and not very well to be honest.

The car is fun to drive, and handles well with the extremely wide track position of the wheels.

Like clockwork, every six months something severely breaks on the car. Overall, I think the quality of the car is average or below average. The only upside is that with a domestic car, I find especially on this one, parts are easier to get to than with my previous Nissan.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8

Summary:

Fun to drive, very fast, very reliable, has always worked right

Faults:

The display on the radio has never worked, although the rest of the radio works fine.

The key has gotten stuck in the ignition and won't come out. This is the first time this has happened since we have owned this car.

General Comments:

Bought in April 2006. Mint condition at 102000 miles. Has always worked flawless.

Very fast, just always works well. No bad comments. Presently has 126000 miles on it and still works as well as when bought in 2006.

Just recently, Jan 5, 2009, the ignition key has become stuck in steering column. The rest of the vehicle still works excellent!

I had the same problem with the key. It was a worn ignition part in the steering wheel the size of a car cigarette lighter. Item cost about $20.00. For the labor to do it total cost $100.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.8L Supercharged

Summary:

Performance, looks, comfort, and reliability at an awesome price

Faults:

The transmission acts a little peculiar. When driving at lower highway speeds (55-60) it surges a little like the torque converter can't decide whether it wants to lock up or not.

The tension pulley for the supercharger makes a little rattling noise at idle, but any increase at all in RPM makes it silent.

When I first turn on the heater fan, it chirps a little but becomes silent after about 5 seconds.

The lamp burned out on the factory stereo's clock/station indicator.

One of the tail light lenses has allowed moisture in.

General Comments:

I have to say that for the age and mileage of this car, I am thoroughly impressed. The person I bought it from was the second owner for 5 years. She never washed it and it still has no rust anywhere on the body. Fortunately she kept the interior clean so it is nearly perfect inside.

This car runs far better than the '95 V8 Cougar I have. If I didn't know any better I would think this thing has a good running V8 in it. I gotta give Pontiac props for supercharging an already good engine.

At faster highway speeds (65-70) the surge goes away and the ride is firm but smooth. I was doing 95 with my dad in it one day, and he asked me if the speedometer was right, because it was smooth and quiet.

I am also impressed by the handling it delivers. It handles like a foreign car with fancy suspension, even though it only has simple McPherson strut suspension. I usually don't have to slow down at all for curves on dry pavement.

Even though the torque converter lock up feature doesn't work properly, this car still gets astounding gas mileage for such a big car. I can get about 30 out of it if I keep my foot light on the pedal. Even lead-foot driving yields 22-25.

Here is a testament to some of the folks talking so good about their GTP's with lower mileage. They still have a long way to go.
