1986 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint / Sprint Green Cloverleaf 1.5

Summary:

Wrap it in cotton wool

Faults:

Rust everywhere. Everything else was perfect.

General Comments:

Brilliant, brilliant car. Lovely to drive and very charismatic.

Glorious sound from twin-carb boxer. Recommend Ansa exhaust manifold to improve torque, although this reduced the crisp exhaust rasp on my car.

Much loved car, but the rust broke my heart...

Read your comments - been there, done that. I could not have put it better myself.

I'm hoping now, 10 years later, to find a good one (it must be good to have lasted this long).

1988 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint / Sprint Cloverleaf 1.7 petrol

Summary:

A brilliant car

Faults:

Water pump replaced due to noise; lots of electrical gremlins, non serious; gear linkage rebuilt due to poor/imprecise change quality (common fault).

General Comments:

Overall build quality poor, but the car has been reliable everyday transport and hasn't let me down. Its great assets are the brilliant neutral handling, good grip; wonderful, rorty engine; good looks and sheer 'Italian-ness'. It's an inspiring car to drive.

As regards rust, I used the car over Winter and the bodywork has suffered - it's a car that really ought only be used in the dry...

Running costs are quite high, mainly a result of highish fuel consumption and a high insurance grouping (UK 14).

The fuel consumption of my 1988 Sprint 1.7 was very good at a constant 10 Km/Litre.

1981 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint / Sprint Veloce 1.5 petrol

Faults:

Clutch, handbrake ratchet, rusty brake pipes, headlights, wipers and just about every other electrical device you can think of. It's also rusting on just about every panel...

General Comments:

Despite the above list of woes, the car has been very reliable and entertaining to own. Parts availability is becoming tricky and expensive although the Alfa owing community is very supportive. The car is a blast to drive with a rorty engine note and excellent roadholding. Brakes superb (when they work) but fiendishly difficult to maintain. Driving position comical - just try driving one for more than an hour continuously...
