1994 Audi 80 avant 1.9tdi

Summary:

Fantastic teutonic reliability

Faults:

Tailgate lock.

Jammed thermostat.

AM radio reception poor.

General Comments:

Absolutely reliable.

More economical than a mini.

Everything works and feels like it's gonna last forever.

Will happily sit all day on the motorway at legal limit and still do at least 50 mpg.

Usual fanatical Teutonic attention to detail on all moving components of the car, everything over engineered and made to last.

1994 Audi 80 E 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Solid, safe, reliable, boring

Faults:

Key operated central locking system fails intermittently on drivers door. This is caused by a leak in the vacuum pump (central locking is vacuum operated) and is costly to repair.

No other problems to report.

General Comments:

I wanted an Audi because of their reputation for quality and reliability, and the 80 does not disappoint.

The early nineties styling still looks great, but the interior is looking dated and the equipment levels are poor for it's class.

I found mine to be a huge bore to drive. The power steering is essential as the car is so heavy, and the 2 litre 8 valve engine just isn't up to the job. The 16 valve version has an extra 40 horsepower.

Not a drivers car, but if you want a safe family car for a couple of grand - here it is.

I have an identical car and I would not agree with your statement, I find the car a great balance of sports car and family car and I do enjoy driving this car.

The 2.0e engine is the best economic/power/solid solution for Audib4 in Europe, maybe in USA the petrol is cheaper?!!! and I have noticed in your movies that there are no cars under 3.2litre,

Great car. It's got 162,000 kms.

It is sluggish, but for a first car it's what I needed. Gearbox is perfect, it's a manual.

Very reliable and nice to drive. 600kms off a tank.

1994 Audi 80 Estate 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

A classic piece of German engineering

Faults:

Nothing major has gone wrong with the car, just a water pump on 125,000. When I acquired the car the engine had been completely refurbished.

General Comments:

It is fantastic on fuel economy.

The Bodywork is very strong.

Doesn't seem to burn any oil.

It is lovely to drive, very smooth and the handling is superb.

For an estate it isn't very roomy, feels more like a hatch back.

1994 Audi 80 TDI 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

A very well made, economical, reliable and lovely to drive car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong so far, just a replacement set of front disc pads.

General Comments:

I have owned several VW's in the past which I thought were good, but now having owned an Audi, this car is great!

1994 Audi 80 TDI estate 1.9 tdi

Faults:

Sticking wastegate on turbo - fixed for £20 by dealer two years ago. No other problems at all.

General Comments:

Economical (c48-55 mpg) and overall reasonably cheap to run. Dealer service expensive - but the fully stamped log book and Audi recovery service (free) more than compensates.

Dealer is vey good.
