1999 Audi A4 1.8

Summary:

Not worth the premium Audi thinks it's worth

Faults:

Nothing after 16 months and 10,000 miles.

General Comments:

I'm horrified at what my American cousins have to contend with with regard to Audi cars and dealers.

I had some trouble with inconsistent idling, and took it to an Audi main agent. £200 charged for a fault that did not exist, and the problem is now worse, cutting out whilst maneuvering. Straight back to Audi (£50 charge for calling you sir) Oh, they said, we believe the problem is such and such and to fix this will be £800 however, we cannot guarantee it will solve your problem.

After threatening god knows what and thumping the desk, I was reimbursed £100, then told them to go forth and multiply. I now use a well respected local garage.

Servicing is now a third of the cost Audi charge, AND I get a proper job done. The problems you guys have are not common over here. It is well known main agents do not service a car as thoroughly as they should.

My view of my Audi overall; pleasant refined ride, awful seating, really tight rear legroom, cannot get more than 30 miles per UK gallon.

My next car will definitely be a VOLVO. So much more comfortable and roomier, easier on the wallet than an Audi. NEVER AGAIN.

1999 Audi A4 1.6

Summary:

Beautiful, comfortable, but not reliable

Faults:

The front suspesion has caused trouble since reaching 50,000 miles. The cost of this so far has been €700 and is still causing trouble.

The Central Locking Pump has finally gone after years of noise.

The rear boot lock button failed in 2002.

The car is relatively comfortable, but at a price.

I would be very wary about going for another newer A4 as it has the same suspension problems.

The Main dealer is pricey and is not interested when your car passes the 3 year old mark.

If I had known the car was going to be this troublesome I would have bought another VW. so much for quality??

General Comments:

I bought the A4 because of the styling and comfort. Now I look past this and see how much it costs to run a 3-5 year old A4.

1999 Audi A4 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Well built car with good performance and appearance supported by good dealer service.

Faults:

Air leak on drivers window seal at 37,000 miles. Not fixed by dealer.

Rear speakers wouldn't play at 37,000 miles. Fixed free of charge by dealer

Electrical fault at 48,000 miles - Door self locked with keys inside, very annoying, hazard flashers came on & stayed on and indicators turned lights on. Fixed free under dealer warranty.

Rubber door protection strip needed replacing at 52,000 miles. easy £17 part replacement.

General Comments:

The Audi A4 was my next choice following a Mercedes which was good but their dealer service was awful.

The Audi A4 1.8 is a great car to drive but the engine is a bit harsh sounding over 2800 rpm for comfortable motorway driving.

This review is well written and seems honest and similar to my own experience.

Had a 00 A4 1.8. Grand car overall. Agree that there is a bit of a 'hard' edged note to the engine at higher revs, but it is kind of sporty, although not that quick. Instrument binnacle failed at 10,000 miles (speedo and rev counter) and was replaced under warranty. Otherwise I spent a trouble free two years and 48k miles with this car!

1999 Audi A4 SE 1.9 TDi 110bhp

Summary:

A comfortable and economical cruiser

Faults:

Time cannot be changed in the clock on the dashboard.

Warning light for brake-pads is constantly on although the pads are fine.

General Comments:

Car is very comfortable for long distance driving.

Economy is superb if the car is driven sensibly. 50 miles per gallon is easily attainable.

Quality of cabin is first class. It feels special to sit in.

Handling and performance are OK, but perhaps nothing special.

Handles safely, but not very exciting.

Performs reasonably for a diesel.

1999 Audi A4 SE 2.5 TDI V6

Summary:

Train Grande Vitesse!!!

Faults:

Coolant expansion box split, oil leak from rocker cover, dealer replaced/repaired under warranty.

General Comments:

Burstless 150 BHP V6 engine, powerful, refined and smooth, averages 40+mpg, sharp brakes and light steering, although as it's the first Audi I've owned, this may be the norm!!

Very comfortable, satisfying drive, don't want to leave the car when I reach work!!

Some wear to the front Pirelli P6000's

Sharp and snatchy brakes are a common Audi trait but soon you soon get used to them.

Brakes can be sorted. It is a disc and pad problem. Same as VW (B5) Passat. Had mine changed under warranty. Became 'normal' progressive brakes. Perfectly weighted. Appears to be a quality problem.
