1997 Audi A6 SE 2.5 TDI

Summary:

Good quality cheap to run car

Faults:

Dash Lights occasionally have blown - easy fix.

CV joint at 180,000 miles - can't winge about that!

Anti roll bar bushings at 170,000 - again can't winge.

Radiator developed a hole - this was due to a mechanic mixing G10 and G11 coolants and causing the coolant to turn to mud and negating the rust inhibitor.

General Comments:

A very reliable car. I have had problems with it, but only ever because of mechanics making mistakes, particularly with the timing on the car. I sometimes wonder how they get away with it. Parts replaced and not set up correctly causing endless problems. So, I bought manual and fixed problems myself. If you are that way inclined, your better of. 110,000 miles of good cheap (50mpg) motoring. Car is now at 230,000 and will do same again no problem.

115bhp is a bit week, but cruises fine. 130bhp is much better option.

Roomy interior and comfy ride.

Would buy another tomorrow.

1997 Audi A6 V6 2.6

Summary:

Oh my God, a dream come true. So reliable I would love another one when the car dies, which it won't

Faults:

Just needed a new exhaust, so it's reliable.

General Comments:

It is a dream come true. It is so comfy, large, and do I have to go on? It is really reliable. I have all the documents and so on.

But you've only done 2000 miles in it... Let us know how happy you are with it once you've paid for a service and parts will you?!

1997 Audi A6 SE 2.8 30v

Summary:

Ace!

Faults:

The dashboard lights sometimes go off and the bulb for the trip computer has stopped working.

High pressure switch on A/C has intermittent fault. This started at about 180,000 miles I think (it only happens in really hot weather). It just means the air con switches itself off and will not come back on until it feels like it!

General Comments:

What a car. I bought this with a full Audi service history. It had one company owner from new. I have driven this as a taxi for the last 18 months and boy has it had some hammer. Speed bumps, wheel chairs, kids, drunk people falling over it - you name it.

It nearly touched 150 mph once and still kicks down at 100 mph!

If you take your time though it will return 32 mpg on a motor way even with 203,000 miles on the clock.

All I've had to do is service this car and replace the exhaust. That's it!

The V6 sounds great and still starts first time every time.

Its just a pity the new shaped A6 doesn't have the same build quality.

Well it depends on the way its been taken care of regarding the new shape, with mine I haven't had problems.

1997 Audi A6 SE 1.8T

Summary:

Overall Excellent Purchase

Faults:

Front Wishbones - The front lower/rear wishbones had play and caused minor suspension noise when traveling over bumps, rocky surfaces or light braking at moderate speeds

Passenger side front window will not complete its upward journey, requires new window kit.

General Comments:

Other than these minor common faults this car is exception at 100K miles. The brakes remain responsive, suspension and steering spot on, transmission feels robust and remains excellent, the turbo boost is linear, and all other systems work brilliantly aside from window issue noted.

Economy is surprising with a motorway and city run coming in at well over 35mpg.

The interior wear is non-existent and all fit and finish remains top, even after the previous owners children and dogs.

1997 Audi A6 2.5TDi 130 bhp red eye 2.5 tubbo diesel

Summary:

Best value for money

Faults:

Mostly regular wear and tear stuff. disks last 60k. Drive boots last about 80k. Dash lights last about 80k then all small bulbs have to be replaced. I changed cam chain tensioner and water pump as a precaution at 140k when belts being changed. One big problem Main flywheel started terrible rattle, the rubber vibration buffer started to disintegrate, I had to take it to a main dealer, big labor bill cost me £1300.

General Comments:

Overall for the great torque 210lbs and 45mpg average I get, its the best value for money. BMW 530D a better car, but cost so much depreciates so much and the car will not do 180,000 without serious money being spent on it.

1997 Audi A6 1.8 turbo

Summary:

Luxury (at a price)

Faults:

When idling, the engine smokes quite badly.

Front suspension rubbers have worn out (you have to buy the complete arm because they are not available separate)

Front indicator cups need replacing as they burn the metal connectors away.

General Comments:

As you can see, I do some serious mileage, just thought I'd let you know what to look forward to.

I have not found the problems you encountered. I have a 97 A6 2.5tdi old shape with 180,000 miles and still original gearbox, clutch, drives. The only things changed are cam belt fuel pump belt tensioner, water pump, disks, pads and drive boots. Apart from that regular oil and filter changes with semi synthetic oil.

The only breakdown was the flywheel started to become loose (it has a rubber shock absorbing middle) and this started rattling. I never use Audi main dealers as they are rip off prices.
