1998 BMW 5 Series 523 SE 2.5

Summary:

Why would you buy anything else?

Faults:

Brake light bulb popped.

That's it.

Has had a new radiator in past (from service history).

The alarm went off once (I know that's not a fault, but I really am struggling to find things that have gone wrong with the car).

General Comments:

Proper comfortable cruiser, with enough guts to do so all day long. It's not a rocket, as it's only a 2.5 litre engine, but then it's pretty economical for an auto.

Bought the car from a friend in the trade; it has all the old bills, including original bill, full service history, all old MOTs etc.. so it was something that caught my eye.

And you can tell, from the moment you get in the car, it has been looked after.

Engine and gearbox are smooth as silk, quiet with no whines or noises. Interior has no rattles whatsoever, and the leather seats look as good as new.

It has had 7 grands worth of extras from new, with auto climate, the coms pack, M5 wheels and suspension etc etc...

It stands out really well in glacier green, with Alpina splitters.

All de-badged and upgraded to clear lenses on the indicators, which I agree knocks years off the car.

This is a great mile muncher, and it really works well for me when cruising from the north to the south every weekend. Hit the cruise control button, and sit back and relax. Even around town, it's a car to drive and get out of still feeling relaxed.

And not that I'm bothered about it, but it is a nice feeling to see someone in a grotty euro box thing pull up alongside you, and seeing in their face, that they wished they had your car and not their little eco friendly thing.

This car is probably one of the best all rounders you can buy, and for the money they make nowadays... why the hell would you buy a Fiesta (or similar)?

1998 BMW 5 Series SE 2.5

Summary:

A proper car

Faults:

Rear cup holder pops out, and ahhhhh that's it.

General Comments:

Steptronic gear box took a while to get used to, but for around town it is perfect.

Done some serious miles in last year, frequent drives from Kent to Nantes in France.

The BMW makes the journey a pleasure, I look forward to the drive (500 lovely motorway miles)

The car is as solid as a rock, and makes you smile from ear to ear when the kick down appears.

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong. Great car comfort. Leather interior, quite, looks just great. I love it.

The only issue that I have is the clutch is sticky when the car starts first.

General Comments:

Quite, fast when you push it and looks great.

Leather interior is great, huge interior and huge boot. Al round a very nice car, nothing I've had so far comes close!

1998 BMW 5 Series SE 2.5

Summary:

Fabulous car, best car I have ever owned. Buy one now, buy one now!!!

Faults:

The thermostat housing fractured where the hose joins causing the engine to begin to overheat. (this is a common problem apparently, along with radiators on the V8's)

ABS sensors have all gone. The housings all crumbled and were attacked by salt corrosion.

General Comments:

Fabulous!! Absolutely fabulous.

This is quite simply the best I have ever owned.

The car has covered 170000 miles and runs like a trooper. I brought it with 76000 miles on the clock and was slightly worried about buying a car with some many miles (was chosen as an opt out company car).

It does 32-33mpg (fair bit of motorway work). handling is sublime for such a big car. It can show a clean pair of heels too many so called sports cars. I opted for a manual to up the fuel economy (but I understand that the resale is better on an auto)

It feels immensely safe with all its airbags etc. the seats are comfy for all day long driving.

I do all my own servicing, as it soooo easy. I can change my oil and filters every 5-7k (not needed I know, makes me feel better!). This car just goes on and on!!!

It looks the bizz when I turn at work, snubs the noses of the bosses with my private plate. I am sure customers think they have one of the bosses dealing with them simply because of the car.

I changed the front and rear lights to the angel eye and clear lenses (this is a must! as it knocks of 5yrs of its age!) I brought a set of 17inch alloys off ebay for £500 and the car looks the daddy!

Would buy another one tomorrow as it has been amazing (make sure you go for the SE as it comes with cruise as standard)

Buy one now. Buy one now. Buy one now.
