1996 Chrysler Neon GLX 2.0

Summary:

Expensive to service, but worth it

Faults:

Auto transmission packed up at 32,000 miles, and head gasket seal @ 40,000.

General Comments:

This neon has been my first car having past my test (now I'm stuck with it as trade in value is £0.) Though to be honest the car has only had problems when I have not respected it (its not for racing). I have one of the last of the old bunch, much more pleasing to drive with 17" rims (on a 3 speed auto.)

1996 Chrysler Neon LX 2.0 16v

Summary:

A fast, but hard to maintain car

Faults:

An electrical problem caused the starter motor to burn out a week after I got the car. The dealer said I had to wait a month for a replacement and it was to cost £220. I got a reconditioned motor of a mail order company for £100 and got it fitted by a local mechanic.

The radiator was sprung a leak and even a second hand radiator costs £130, instead I had mine re-cored which cost £70.

General Comments:

The Neon is very quick up to about 80 mph, but after that it is not very responsive.

The seats are comfortable enought.

Finding replacement parts for this car is very difficult and can be expensive.

Grip is good in the dry, but in the wet it has a tendancy to under steer.

I have had mine 6 months now, and the only points that I have found are the very high back making reversing something of a guess, the small boot and the lack of storage space inside the car. On spec its impossible to beat at the price, and the build quality is hidden by a nice outer package.
