1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol

Summary:

XR2 Beater with no effort involved

Faults:

Head gasket blew, electrical problems. Fuel filler hose has rusted so it won't lock, Doh. Electric windows don't work as well.

General Comments:

I quite like the GT. It is fairly rapid. Still get whipped by anything bigger than a 1.6 though. Handles like a shopping trolley but it's OK once you get in a straight line and boot it. Mines running at 80 bhp. Get a Janspeed Manifold and system, K&N and a rolling road tune and you're looking at 100 bhp.

Which is what I am planning next. Use the alloys off a Saxo and you've got nice handling too.

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Cheap to buy, cheap(ish) insurance, loadza fun, but watch out for spares and repairs

Faults:

Only had the car about 6 weeks and all ready all the brakes have had to be replaced, the starter motor died, had a problem with the carburettor, the oil and air filters have both been replaced and so have the spark plugs.

General Comments:

From my experiences with the car (which are somewhat limited) it seems to be very quick for a 1.4. Quite economical as well - as long as you don't rag it. Far too many rattles and things falling off inside but that's only to be expected with a car this age. Still well worth the money if you're a young driver looking for something more sporty than your little 1.0l Nova or 1.2 Corsa (as I had). For me it was a toss up between the AX GT, 106 XS and the Nova SR 1.4. Think I picked the right one of the three. It blows the pants off the SR and, at half the price of the XS, is a steal. Ride height is way too high but is it worth sacrificing comfort for looks??? Of course it is!!! Just wear that extra pair of pants for the padding - U never know they might come in handy for your passenger - 0-60 in 8.7 secs is hardly snails pace and could prompt even the most hardened passenger to dirty their pants...

1990 Citroen AX Salsa 1.1 petrol

Faults:

Most recently, the radiator cap has worn out, causing me to lose water very rapidly.

Also needed a part replacement of the exhaust pipe, some years back.

Other than that - a superb little car!

General Comments:

I would recommend this car to young females who want a car with grunt, yet doesn't have the hassle of being a big saloon or sports car. It is cheap to run, is easy to repair, and blows most men (with their sporty aspirations) away at traffic lights!

A brill little car! Looks nice, goes superb for a 1.1 and really cheap on petrol, tax and insurance!!!

1990 Citroen AX TGD 1.4 diesel

Faults:

Had it 5 years now (got it at 36,000).

Cylinder head gone twice - this is the glass jaw of the PSA diesel family.. second time after only about 5,000 miles after first re-bore.

Heater matrix burst one time too.

Blower fan gone once, about to go again.

Rear hatch lock broken and fixed (DIY).

Mind you at 90,000 miles it's still ultra-economical.

General Comments:

AX is the last Citroen worthy of the name... it's quirky and well designed. Nothing can touch it for economy and with the rear seat out it can carry more than you imagine.

Will give 60mpg at 75mph on 450 mile non-stop M-way runs.

Hard to access a lot of the components since it's a nastily done switch from LHD to RHD.

If you buy a "D" make sure it's got FSH and ask about the cylinder head.

Dealer service varies.

Accommodation atrocious inside but I can't help loving it.

I bought a 1990 1.4 TGD in June with 102,000 miles. I had to have the head gasket done shortly afterwards. There's no telling how many times it was done before though.

The mechanic recommended I should have the cylinder head reground at the same time, but I couldn't afford it so gambled on just getting the gasket changed. So far it's been ok.

My main problem now is that I had an accident which damaged the front passenger side wing and front panel. I've been told by various people that the repair will cost more than replacing the car, but haven't given up yet since I've spent so much on it already. The front of the car seems very poorly built to survive accidents though. I suppose the trick is to just not crash them.

The fuel consumption really is good, but I couldn't say it's been cheap to own.

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol

Faults:

Central locking on main door has gone wrong, well just stopped working actually! Needed new thermostat also.

General Comments:

Brilliant little hot hatch, blows most things off the road. Wicked handling and pokey 1.4 are just the right combination for good fuel economy and performance that means your passenger seat is rather soggy when you take your mother out for a spin! Then again, when do you take your mother out for a burn - NEVER!

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol

Faults:

Needed new distributor, alternator, rear brake drums, various hoses, thermostat, head gasket, rocker cover gasket and timing belt. All despite regular servicing.

General Comments:

Great fun to drive, brilliant handling and poor brakes. Very fragile and very expensive when it goes wrong which it did frequently. Alloy wheels with unique 3 stud fittings that corrode very badly. Also odd tyre sizes restricting you to expensive Michelin MXLs.
