1995 Citroen AX Elation 1.0 Injection

Summary:

Cheap, quick nippy motor

Faults:

Fag Lighter Fault.

Speedo Needle sticks.

Rattles everywhere typical Citroen. Found most of them now thought.

2 New CV Boots. New front pads and discs on front due to leaking grease from the CV Boot.

Cam belt @ 55,000.

Gear box is a bit noisy in 3rd.

Annoying vibration in the door.

New instrument bulbs, they go regularly and it's a pain getting out the instrument panel.

General Comments:

Good cheap car, but when they get older and do more miles problems start occurring. Good for a 100mph, I've also had 97mph with 5 passengers which in not bad for a 954cc, however the brakes don't work well with 5 up.

Rattle like hell, handles like a dog, through any corner you must expect the body roll.

Not many performance parts for AX's available.

Not bad for 1.0, cheap and goes well when pushed.

You say the Citroen AX handles like a dog. Is that why it was praise in every motoring publication in it's day? People assume that body = bad handling. Handling is not about roll/roadholding. It's about enjoyment, it's all down to the steering.

1995 Citroen AX Forte 1.4i

Summary:

Absolute pocket-rocket

Faults:

Various electrical faults including handbrake warning light, various panel bulbs and indicators all failing.

The heater matrix blew at 83000 miles filling the car with antifreeze in the process!

General Comments:

This car accelerates with the best of them and handles like a dream.

Bodywork, however, dents when somebody walks past it and for some reason the interior smells like a corpse.

1995 Citroen AX Debut 1.0

Summary:

Great first car

Faults:

No major problems at its 45,000 mile service.

New downpipe at 47,000 miles.

Last service at 54000 miles, required a new handbrake cable, discs and pads.

Apart from that the car has cost me bugger all over the past 1 1/2 years.

Also the headlights failed on me recently leaving me with only full beam (oncoming commuters were not amused). This however, was due to me driving through floods (also a lost wheel trim, front mudflaps & number plate, but hey it was fun).

General Comments:

Surprisingly quick for a 954cc. Sees 100+mph quite regularly. I am a young lad and I do drive this car quite hard yet I still see figures of 52mpg.

The main problem is comfort & size. I regularly carry 3 passengers in the rear and to say it is a bit cramped is an understatement. Now insurance is a bit friendlier, I have been saving for a Saxo VTS in April.

1995 Citroen AX Spree 1.0 petrol

Summary:

A great economical car although poor acceleration

Faults:

Nothing yet, but the first service is due soon.

The left hand speaker didn't work at first but was easily fixed at no cost.

Exhaust looks a bit rusty and the gear stick squeaks a bit.

General Comments:

Can go at a fair speed for an under 1 litre engine with only 4 gears. Very slow acceleration in 4th gear but improves in third gear if you can put up with the noise. Top speed I've done so far is 85mph.

Brakes aren't perfect as you need to add a lot of pressure.

Very economical and comfortable in the front but not in the back!

Ideal for a first car.

Capable of doing high speeds but takes a while to reach them.

Very high biting point on the clutch.

Very small boot.

1995 Citroen AX Elation 1.0i

Faults:

Loose handbrake, adjusted 3 times.

Warped front brake discs replaced twice, once under warranty, the second 18 months later.

Water leaking in under front passenger side carpet, noticed after the warranty had expired.

2 seals on the drive shaft failed during its 3rd year.

Drivers door lock cylinder fell off and was replaced under warranty.

General Comments:

On the whole a great little car if not a little under powered. It's a shame about the brake problems.

1995 Citroen AX Dimension 1.0i petrol

Faults:

Nothing except a set of warped brake discs replaced under warranty by the dealer.

General Comments:

Excellent little car, economical, entertaining drive. A touch noisy, but fuel economy makes up for it. Very lively for a 950cc engine. 56 mpg highest figure, 54 mpg lowest. Used almost exclusively on motorways and dual carriageways.

1995 Citroen AX TGE 1.1

Faults:

Speedometer cable incorrectly fitted at manufacture, 40,000 miles cable snapped.

New cable fitted, worked for 2 days then stopped. Speedometer workings had been damaged by old cable.

Dash bulbs blowing. Loud clock, electric windows failure due to short in rubber piping between door and car.

Clutch needs regular adjustment.

General Comments:

Driving position is too high giving you a stiff neck. Pedals are too close together causing you to press both brake and accelerator together.

Seats aren't supportive enough.

Sound setup is very poor.

Quite nippy though.

1995 Citroen AX Forte 1.1i petrol

Faults:

Alternator replaced under warranty.

A few niggly electrical problems.

General Comments:

A good compromise between performance and economy and fun to drive.

However, it feels flimsy, the brakes are pathetic and the bodywork dents just by looking at it too hard!
