2011 Fiat Doblo Eleganza 1.6 multijet diesel

Summary:

Good value for money

Faults:

Glow plugs failed - this was the biggest expensive repair to the engine.

Climate control a bit hesitant to work sometimes.

I look after the car well, it has been reliable enough. A lot of rattles however and the door seals have started leaking on driver's side. Side sliding doors a little hard to close also.

General Comments:

I got a good deal on this Doblo considering I just needed basic economical transport.

Good looking, spacious, practical vehicle. Interior has way too many cheap looking plastics however. But the seats are comfortable and the car is refined enough.

1.6 diesel engine is very slow, but always does over 50 mpg even when loaded with passengers. Not bad to drive.

If you are after a spacious family car, it is pretty much ideal. Nothing special, but then it does not pretend to be anything special. Lots on the used market, choose carefully and always go for a looked after car. Be aware a lot of Doblo's were used as taxis.

2009 Fiat Doblo Active 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Not the best in this class

Faults:

Not much other than the consumables and oil changes. Rattle coming from the rear, might be suspension or exhaust bracket, will get it checked.

Doors are a bit stiff, and the seals surrounding them are coming away.

General Comments:

Bought this as I needed a larger car for a growing family. It is a spacious and practical enough vehicle, but there is not much more positive things to say about it.

The car is not very well equipped, Active is a lower range spec. No A/C, no nothing other than front electric windows. Firm ride around town but not bad cruising at speed. Interior is cheap and far too much plastic everywhere.

1.4 petrol is not the best engine, very slow and barely gets near 40 mpg, I should have went for a diesel.

Has been reliable enough and practical, so I guess it does what I need, though I wouldn't buy another, maybe try a Vauxhall Zafira or something a bit different and better to drive next.

2010 Fiat Doblo SX 1.6 turbo diesel

Summary:

Very practical but dull

Faults:

Usual wear and tear (suspension, brakes, service parts) plus a few electrical gremlins, but nothing really serious or expensive. Sliding doors felt a bit flimsy by the time I was finished with it, but it did get a lot of use.

General Comments:

This Doblo was used as a taxi for most of its life. 2010 model is the first of the 'new' updated shape, and I think it is a lot sharper looking than the old model.

Inside this car impresses the most - lots and lots of space and well though out cubby holes for storage. You see a lot of these as taxis and mobility cars and it's easy to see why, it is very user friendly. Sliding doors on both sides are very practical; some people struggle to close them though as they are not the lightest.

To drive it's pretty boring but comfortable. The 1.6 diesel is a good all rounder, doing about 50 MPG on average, but don't expect any performance, it does the job and no more. I think mine was the "Multi-jet" engine.

Reliability was pretty good for a Fiat, as I've heard they get quite low ratings over the years, but I never had much beyond wear and tear as mentioned above. Decided to get rid of it when approaching 100,000 miles though as I bet it would have given me serious trouble being on the road everyday, but you could say that about any car at a decent age and mileage.

When it comes down to it, you can't expect much from a car designed for families or to be used as a taxi; at the end of the day it does what it is supposed to do and it will never be a car to get excited about, but if you are looking for something practical I'd recommend the Doblo. If buying used, check the service history and a well looked after one is a must, but be careful if it has been used as a taxi, there will be excessive interior wear.

Thanks for your useful review, which electrical gremlins did you experience?

I didn't write the original review, however a friend of mine has a 2010 Doblo diesel with 130,000 miles on it. Common problems at this age and mileage were -

Rear doors not unlocking with the central locking (auto electrician fixed this).

Starting problems (starter replaced).

Engine glow plugs failed, replaced, the most expensive problem so far.

He says it's generally been a good car, cheap enough to fix if you know an honest garage, and a bit more reliable than Fiat's of the past.
