1984 Fiat Uno 45 0.9 petrol

Summary:

Horrific

Faults:

Almost everything!

General Comments:

The memories I have of dealing with this car I bought brand new in 1984 still haunt me. To this day I cannot believe how bad this car was.

Took a test drive, just needed an economical small hatch at the time, not too impressed but I could live with the car so I thought.

But the problems started immediately once my new car arrived. Windows wipers would not work, engine would cut out and stall for no good reason, doors were stiff, etc, the list went on.

Good points? Seats were OK and the car could be economical to run if it was reliable.

Went back to Fiat got a full refund and returned the car, later bought a Vauxhall Nova, another crappy cheap hatchback but was at-least reliable!

So yeah, a review nearly 40 years too late, but hey maybe Fiat have changed since then.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

40 years ago, Mercedes-Benz (full name, written properly with the hyphen, as it deserved, past tense) was the cat's whiskers. Guess what.

They have improved since 1984, but only slightly :)

1984 Fiat Uno 45 0.9 OHV

Summary:

Excellent example of FIAT small car wizardry

Faults:

Nothing much - a fan belt snapped - usual servicing and consumables.

A tiny bit of rust on the bottom of the driver's door at the time of sale did not bode well for its longevity, but saw it in Middleton Arndale car park 5 years later and it had not got any worse.

General Comments:

Excellent first new car - lightweight, so felt peppy, and the handling was excellent. Ride a little firm, and despite only having 4 speed manual (motorways were a bit of a chore), it almost never got below 50 MPG.

For its time, only this and the Pug 205 were worth considering - for some reason the Fiesta and Metro outsold both in the UK.

Good to know there were some good Uno's out there - my father bought one brand new in 1984 and it fell to bits immediately, took the car right back and bought a Fiesta instead - much better. I do get your comment about the Rover Metro however - those were terrible and rusted even quicker than Fiat!
