1997 Ford Galaxy Ghia 1.9

Summary:

Great car; nice drive and family car

Faults:

I have had no problems with this car at all.

General Comments:

The car is very good. It has got me to France and back, from the other side of Paris, on a tank of fuel, on more than one occasion.

1997 Ford Galaxy Aspen 1.9TDI

Summary:

A lot of car for the money

Faults:

Since I have purchased the car, only minor things have gone wrong with it.

Needed new brake discs and pads as you would expect from the mileage.

Rear windscreen wiper has stopped working.

Spare wheel winder needing repair.

General Comments:

I am very impressed with my 1997 Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDI, especially since it is now 10 years old and done over 120,000 miles.

This was my first MPV and I did a lot of looking around before deciding on the Galaxy. I did much comparison too many other MPV's, 7 seater hatchbacks and 4*4's. I was put off slightly with people reporting high running costs, but I have not found that.

I am somebody who is very picky when it comes to cars especially when it comes to reliabilty and repairs.

Although I was intending to buy the 110bhp version, I eventually settled on the 90bhp version and although not the quickest thing in the world, still goes well with full weight and towing if necessary.

The drive and handling is superb and handles like a car although rear visibility can be poor making parking awkward.

I have found the running cost to be extremely reasonable and in fact its once of the cheapest vehicles I have had to service.

The Galaxy is very economical and I can probably get around 45 mpg when not towing or fully weighted.

The interior I have found to be very comfortable and can quite easily be used to carry 7 on a long journey without too much discomfort.

Overall I would deffinately recommend the Galaxy and would buy another, although maybe next time go for a TDI with a bit more power if I had the chance. I guess like any vehicle there is horror stories of bad workmanship and poor reliability, but my experience has been a very well made vehicle that seems to go forever.

1997 Ford Galaxy Ghia X 2.3

Summary:

Very spacious

Faults:

Drain hole at base of windscreen blocked, during a torrential downpour, water seeped in through the dashboard on the passenger side. This water found it's way into a little storage space under the front passenger seat which houses the ECU (which controls all the cars electrics). The ECU sitting in a pool of water caused the central locking to fail, & more distressingly, made all the electric windows open.

I called a recovery service to help me close the windows, but they were unable to help. I covered the car with a tarpaulin & took it back to the dealer the following day who replaced the ECU under warranty.

I have since placed the ECU in a polythene bag, tied with a cable tie & placed the unit on a thick piece of foam. I have not had any problems since. This is the only fault I have had with the car.

General Comments:

Very comfortable ride.

Handles well considering the size.

Everything I've bought has fitted in, from 8 foot children's slide to double wardrobe.

To this owner, I am having similar problems with my ford galaxy. the dealer is at a lost as to what the problem is. the car lacks in pull, its sluggish. when I first purchased it I had to replace the MAF sensor as it was faulty. the proubles now are similar to that of when the MAF went, but we now know presently the MAF is fine. what could be the problem?

I have a 2.0l Ghia auto, 95/96, 47K. Lost all power of acceleration, all diagnostics showed OK. Solution was collapsed baffles in exhaust which passed gas at low revs, but shut off the gas flow on acceleration. Several hundred pounds of new exhaust cured the problem.

Other experience as other owners: great people/goods carrier, very comfortable, auto box good, weak plastic bits everywhere, poor petrol consumption. I would go diesel if I bought another.

The Ford Galaxy is more or less the same car as the Volkswagon Sharan. (identical motor)

I recently lost my Sharan thanks to a total engine burn-out, the result of an empty oil tank NOT REGISTERED on the dash board read out.

Can anybody shed some light on this?
