1991 Honda Civic GL 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Honda practicality, but fun with it

Faults:

Power assisted steering leak.

Engine mount collapsed.

Exhaust vibration at 1700 rpm (seems incurable!).

Head gasket failure.

Rear offside wheel arch corrosion.

Worn/faulty electric window guides (known fault when purchased).

General Comments:

Comfortable at the wheel, plenty leg and headroom.

Controls and instruments are well laid out.

Not dramatically quick (though perhaps the manual version is more responsive), but plenty adequate.

Cruises nicely at motorway speeds, though a little noisy (my 1986 Shuttle was more relaxed at 70).

Ride is about perfect; can feel the road, but most bumps get ironed out.

Power assisted steering makes the handling a bit vague, but the actual grip is very good.

Tardis like luggage accommodation; folding the front seat flat allows for 7 foot long loads.

2 doors and a low roof mean it is less than ideal as a passenger vehicle.

I've owned over 20 cars, and this is one of my favourites.

1991 Honda Civic 1.6i-16 DOHC 1.6 petrol

Summary:

True Performance Potential

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I have owned this car for over 2 years and I have to say that "The Civic 1.6i-16 DOHC has a lot of potential".

This is a super car in it's class and boasts racing car specification.

It's equipped with the combination of power, low weight and more for high performance purposes.

This is one of the most aggressive looking hatchbacks ever made.

This model has some advantages over the Civic 1.6i-VT.

The engine is extremely solid and can tolerate a lot of punishment, also the clutch and gearbox is very tough.

Only needs simple mods to gain more powerful performance, which is the best factor.

The downsides are the front seats are no good for long journeys, No PAS and lacks grip in the wet. Mr.A Khan

A quick update about my Civic 1.6i-16 DOHC.

I'm hopefully going to sell my Civic 1.6i-16 next year in May 2008 for £1,000.

I am going to buy a Corolla GTI-16 to find out if it's got better performance, reliability and features than a Civic 1.6i-16 DOHC.

1991 Honda Civic IVT 1.6 vtec

Summary:

Pocket rocket!!

Faults:

Exhaust back box blown.

General Comments:

This car is a pocket rocket. It's seriously fast for a 1.6; it gets to 60 in 7 seconds.

It's getting a bit old now, and it's difficult to find parts for it, but it's definitely a future classic.

1991 Honda Civic GL 1.4

Faults:

Car has been great since purchase 9 months ago

Went out yesterday afternoon, tried to start cold engine, manual choke, as usual, engine turned over threatened to fire once or twice, but never managed it, added more fuel just in case, no difference, just turns over. Tired a couple of times since, no change, battery strong.

General Comments:

Great car, this is the first time I ever had a prob, very annoying as I was due for a physiotherapy appointment that I had been waiting 6 months for and had to cancel cos car wouldn't start.

1991 Honda Civic 16i 16 DOHC 1.6

Summary:

Bulletproof understated performance

Faults:

Front vented brake discs always seem to warp - been through two sets now.

General Comments:

This car is a perfect balance between power and reliability. It's an old cliche that honda's are reliable - but its true. Add to this 138bhp in a very light car and you've got a load of fun for very little cash.

The noise from the engine over 5000rpm turns heads and the handling is akin to that of a go-cart.

1991 Honda Civic VTi 1.6 VTEC petrol

Summary:

A cracking good car that will be a classic

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Very fast. The engine is a little gem! Revs to the threshold of pain. No GTi could stay with it. Five speed gearbox easy to use but sharp and unforgiving if you didn't shift deliberately - easy to crunch the gears.

I had a three-door hatchback. Remarkably roomy. I am 6ft 2in and had clearance beneath the sunroof. Plenty of elbow room. Fits two adults in the back. Boot, however, is small. Any serious luggage required the rear seat to be folded.

Lack of power-steering meant that slow-speed manoueuvring was hard work. With wide alloy wheels, and tyres to suit, the steering was heavy! However, the small size made up for it making it easy to drive in traffic and down narrow streets.

The seats were rather small and lacked support for someone my size, but having said that I found them comfortable over long distances including a tour of Western Europe once. Small people found the front seats rather hard and uncomfortable.

1991 Honda Civic ESi 1.6 VTEC

Summary:

A wolf in a granny's car's clothing

Faults:

Exhaust went, but they do. That's life.

General Comments:

This car has never let me down. OK the exhaust went, but these things happen. It's quick, reliable, economical and fun (especially when the VTEC kicks in). Insurance is group 12 and with the performance it's justified. It's a wolf in a granny's car's clothing. If you can pick one up cheap do it!
