2001 Hyundai Trajet GSi 2.0 petrol

Summary:

A good affordable people carrier

Faults:

The drivers seat cover had to be replace after a few hundred miles due to some loose stitching.

The air bag warning light sensor needed to be replaced before its first service as the light would not extinguish.

The roof rails had to be replaced at 25,000 miles due to rust.

The gearbox linkage cables and power steering pump were also replaced at 25,000 miles. Despite this after another 5,000 miles both problems are re-occurring.

General Comments:

The car is well built with build quality high in comparison to my Renault Scenic and many other cars in its class. So far there are no squeaks or rattles coming from the trim.

The seats are comfortable even on very long journeys and there is plenty of room for six people, seven is a bit of a squeeze.

The engines performance leaves something to be desired. When pulling away it is hesitant and also suffers from occasional flat spots when accelerating. In general the car cruises well, but dislikes town driving.

It also tows quite well even when seating six, but the gearbox, in my petrol model, has to be worked hard.

2001 Hyundai Trajet GSi 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

It would make a good family vehicle if the gearbox problem gets sorted

Faults:

The gearbox went wrong at 37,000 miles and was replaced.

The second gearbox only lasted 9,000 miles, it was replaced with a modified gearbox.

The third gearbox went wrong after 24,000 miles, Hyundai said they would not replace the gearbox as their technical staff said that this was an acceptable life for one of their gearboxes.

General Comments:

The seat belt return springs are too weak, the seat belt straps sometimes get forgotten, fall out of the door and when the door is shut, put a dent in the bodywork inside the door.

The paint work is poor, it comes off of the front bumper too easily when being washed.

It is reasonable economical, comfortable to drive, but lacks storage space.

I so agree with you on the self destruct gearbox issue. It has pathetic durability on a car from this manufacturer. The seat belts too; a rubber band has better return strength.

Could have been a great car if the gears and clutch were sorted out.
