1987 Mazda 323 GLX 1.5

Summary:

Great practical classic

Faults:

No faults with the car at all.

The idle speed got adjusted and the cam belt was replaced at 40,000 miles

General Comments:

For a car which is almost 27 years old, I can't fault it, it has so far been very reliable and I have done many long distance trips (one almost 600 miles) and it didn't miss a beat.

Fuel economy at 26 MPG isn't great compared to today's cars, but it makes up for that in reliability.

When driving long distance it is smooth and comfortable, but slightly more noisy at the 80mph mark than some cars, but it's not noticeable.

Performance isn't fantastic; it's slow off the mark, but great once into higher gears.

Oh, a small thing; on a wet day at a higher speeds, you have to be careful on corners... The car sticks to the road well, but when you do push it a little too much, it gets angry and the back end has gotten wobbly.

1987 Mazda 323 javelin SX 1.3

Summary:

Reliable Cheap and Sturdy

Faults:

Absolutely nothing serious has gone wrong with the car. There is some rust on the rear wheel arches, which has started to spread to one of the sills, but all electrics are still working perfectly well, and the engine appears to be mechanically sound even for this relatively high mileage.

There are some small oil leaks at the gaskets, but I have only put in 1 litre since purchase.

Had to replace the petrol cap with a vented one as vacuum was building up in the tank causing fuel supply problems.

The back hatch door rattles a bit, and the lock has broken, but still operates from the lever inside. The rams holding the hatch have leaked however, and need replacing to keep the hatch fully open.

General Comments:

Good little beginners car with PAS, rear window heater and some nice touches such as adjustable lumbar support, map lights, ignition and keyhole illumination.

Not fast enough to get into trouble with, especially fully loaded, but starts every time.

Overall economical to run with fairly low petrol/oil consumption.

1987 Mazda 323 LX 1.3

Summary:

A practical, economical bargain

Faults:

The head gasket and radiator were replaced one week after I purchase it (paid for by the seller).

Replaced the front brake pads at 129000 miles.

Replaced two tyres at same time.

Tends to leak a little oil from various engine gaskets, but only having to put in about one litre per 800 miles.

General Comments:

This car is an excellent workhorse.

It is a five door model and can easily accomodate five or even six people.

This is an economical car to run.

This model has most of the modern comforts you would find in newer cars.

1987 Mazda 323 1.6i 1.6

Summary:

A really good all-rounder

Faults:

Absolutely nothing!!

The ONLY maintenance I had to do to this car in the 9 months of ownership was to replace a broken window when it was broken into.

This is the second one of these I have owned, the other is still in my family and has covered 160,000 miles with no failures.

I managed to run this one completely out of oil and she still didn't give up on me.

General Comments:

A great little car. Plenty of power (no super car though) for overtaking, would happily cruise at @90+Mph with a full load. Some great features for such an old car, like dimming interior lights (superficial I know, but class!) auto boot lid/petrol cap release, tool kit in boot, electric pack, very comfortable half bucket seats, very comfortable rear seats (so I'm told), the list just goes on and on.

There's only one thing I would say against this car, firstly it's a tiny bit thirsty on petrol compared to other small cars, but its almost negligable.

1987 Mazda 323 1.6i petrol

Summary:

Brilliant, cheap motoring

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

General Comments:

Well, I only owned this car for 8 months, but I have had one before so I feel I'm qualified in the running of a 323 1.6i. The performance dosen't exactly dazzle, but it is exciting off the mark and will easily cruise at speed with a full load.

Nice and comfy, some nice touches like interior lights that dim before going out (that's really cool), individual map lights for front passengers, tool kit in the boot, and loads more.

This car, and the one I had before, never ever let me down, ever. It was 100% reliable and I would have another tomorrow.

A great drivers car, comfortable and sturdy (for a small Japanese car).
