1991 Mercedes-Benz W124 300D

Summary:

Why would you want any other car?

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This car is a legend!

Still looking good at nearly half a million miles, totally reliable. Engine still uses no oil, returns 35-40mpg. Auto box was re-built at 380000 miles.

This is the only second hand car where mileage really isn't a problem providing it has been serviced properly.

A/C still works fine, interior still looking good with the occasional valet.

This car really feels like it will do a million miles... hope so, because I have no intention of getting rid of it!

1991 Mercedes-Benz W124 e300 24v 3.0

Summary:

Extremely well built classic!

Faults:

Nothing. If serviced correctly, these cars are bulletproof.

General Comments:

I love these cars. I currently have 2 of them. I have had 4 w124 in total, including e200, e220, e220 coupe and e300 24v.

The leather on these cars is very hard wearing.

The e200 with cloth I had, did wear on the drivers bolster.

They rust in the front wheel arches in particular, but on all of mine I had this dealt with swiftly, and removed professionally and repainted, and it never came back.

They handle extremely well, and are so smooth and comfortable, unlike the replacement w210 which suffer from cracked springs and suspension, and rust problems, including electrical problems, even on low mileage examples! Give me a w124 anytime.

Have owned my 300 CE 24 for nearly three years now. It has covered 88,000 miles. Initially had a problem with the car conking out, which was frustrating to resolve and get the reliability where it should be, but eventually nailed the problem down to the fuel pump relay, which is housed within the M.A.S. computer tucked behind the battery on the 1991 model. Managed to obtain a 2nd hand one for £125. Since then the car looks, drives and handles better than 99% of biscuit tins on the road, and it's good to see they are holding if not increasing their values. There have been no other problems, and it sails through the M.O.T. I wouldn't swap it for anything.

Summary:

Unburstable Reputation - So Well Deserved!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

My partner thought I was mad. You want to buy a 16 year old Mercedes? Yes I said and launched into talk about legendary W124 quality - far better than the E320 estate that had clogged up my drive for a few years, because everything went wrong with it and I ran out of money...

Won the argument and picked up J reg 300D on 16th July. First impression on how good it looked, exterior was very clean and interior looked a little dated but had worn very well.

I have been driving it now for nearly a month and would like to make the following general comments:

At 130k the car drives like new.. There is no play in steering, ride is smooth, seals around windows all good, engine sounds great.

Performance is what you would expect from a non turbo older diesel - leisurely. But will cruise effortlessly at 90mph. Excellent fuel consumption, getting 35-40 mpg.

No I am over the newness of this car, listening out for every little rattle and engine sound, I am relaxing and enjoying the car. It inspires confidence. You know you are going to get to your destination in comfort and with the minimum of fuss. Not bad for a 17 year old car!

1991 Mercedes-Benz W124 CE 24 3 litre 24 Valve

Summary:

Uber-coupe from the guys who know how to build cars

Faults:

5-speed Automatic Gearbox came to a smoky end on Christmas Day on the M25 - very hard to find re-con/2nd hand replacement - new one from Mercedes costs about £3500.

General Comments:

If you want a car that is a cut above the rest in terms of comfort over distance, long-legs and a 'hyper-speed' factor on kick down, this is for you.

Fabulous build quality both inside and out - huge boot - this car is a real touring car, comfortable space for 4 adults.
