2000 MG F VVC 1.8

Summary:

A love/hate relationship

Faults:

Surprise, surprise - head gasket failure.

Catalytic converter replaced.

General Comments:

As has been well documented in reviews of this car, head gasket failure is almost to be expected when purchasing one of these cars, and mine was no exception. However, the item can be replaced and a replacement designed to overcome the problem is available through the MG owners' club. The replacement component was designed for the Land Rover Freelander and, since having mine replaced, have experienced no further faults. The garage bill was quite steep but the cost to buy the car and its general running costs do provide something by way of offset.

The overall build quality of the car could be better but, that said, it is probably not something that detracts too heavily from the overall ownership experience.

Negatives aside, this car has a charming side: it is a pretty looking car and handles well. I have replaced the standard tyres with Toyo's and (in the dry) grip is superb. In VVC form the car is genuinely fast and the ride is comfortable enough for long distances.

A reasonable sized boot (for this type of vehicle) adds some practicality and fuel economy is better than you may expect.

In summary, provided that you factor in the cost of a new head gasket and lavish some care and attention on the car, the MGF can be a lot of fun. On those sunny days when I'm driving for driving's sake around the countryside, the MGF does almost seem to make sense.
