1979 Opel Kadett L 1.3

Summary:

I'm sure its mother loved it dearly... but I didn't...

Faults:

Electrical faults drained the battery - never managed to find them all, so always carried jump leads.

Heater broke down in two different ways - heat exchanger and then fan (not economic to repair, as the car only cost 90 quid). Lead to permanent condensation problems until the car finally broke (see below).

Fourth gear broke (quite literally - a chunk snapped off) while going rather quickly past Potter's Bar on the M25. That was the end of the car.

General Comments:

It is still my least-favourite car I have owned, it was bought as a stop-gap and it only just managed to fulfill that role. The most useful part of it was the wing mirror which I broke off before taking it to the scrapyard, which served me as a shaving mirror for many years.

1979 Opel Kadett City 1.2 Hatchback. 1.2 petrol

Summary:

Want some fun and pleasure get one...........

Faults:

Replaced springs and shocks.

Some body panels.

Treated rust areas.

General Comments:

I bought this car for £100 as a little runabout in 1999 when I was broke and out of work.

I used to do 56000 miles a year in company cars.

Goes like a little bullet.

Truly handles like it's on rails.

Very very reliable, took it partially restored to IOM TT 2002. It never missed a beat pulled uphills like a little train.

So nice decided to restore it and keep it as part of the family.

Apart from cult club in germany very rare and different little car in the u.k. now.

1985 Opel Kadett

Summary:

An well-proven economy gem

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

An excellent and good looking car which still looks as good now as it did back in the mid eighties. A fine-handling, firm, but comfortably riding car, it was designed to be easy on the eyes. It's no wonder it was sold by so many different brands, but none were as right as the Opel versions.

1986 Opel Kadett GL 1.2

Summary:

Best money I every spent

Faults:

Water pump went at 90000 miles or so.

Front brake disks eventually had to be replaced around the same time as the water pump.

General Comments:

What a great car.

She did age a bit and things had to be replaced, but overall she was a great car.

She got oil and plugs every 6000miles and a new set of points every 12000miles.

This seemed to keep her happy.

Good acceleration, but at the end of the day only a 1.2 under the hood!

1987 Opel Kadett Estate 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Very, very reliable, economical, but not too comfy

Faults:

Had to replace distributer (only major cost) 5 years ago.

General Comments:

Very economical car. Takes 7 liters on 100 km. Great space for a smaller estate.

After 13 years now, it starts making funny noises, especially with the bumpy Irish roads. Passed the National car test in March this year without a problem.

1990 Opel Kadett S 1.2

Summary:

Cheap to run, fun to drive - 4 gears is a laugh

Faults:

My father gave me the car a few months ago but I only just got insured a month ago. The car is ten years old and has never broken down. The only problem ever encountered has been a flat tyre.

General Comments:

I love this car. It's great fun to drive. The 4-speed gearbox is great fun to use. Powersteering would be great, though. It's a very fast and nippy car for a 1.2. It feels solid, it has brilliant fuel economy and it's cheap to insure. The boot is huge for a 3 door hatchback. Always starts, even on cold wet mornings. The manual choke was a pain at first but I am used to it now.

1987 Opel Kadett S 1.2 petrol

Faults:

Had a big problem with front brakes, It was serviced 10 times because of that.

And nothing in general.

Now rust is coming :-))

It is 11 years but still going.

General Comments:

Good for the city but take another car for long trips. It's not very confortable (typical German).
